Your First Step: Self-Acceptance

  • Quite often, I find myself meeting with someone who is desperate for help, but emotionally spent over what they are going through. As they share the battleground, thoughts feel like spaghetti and emotions are fried to the point of numbness. Frustration is so pent up, they are about to explode. As they share their story, a tension rises in their voice.
A personal hostility swells within them. The reality is they are angry with themselves. They can’t seem to find a way into freedom and therefore, they are filled with disgust over their lack of progress. A driving thought comes to the surface, saying, “why am I still struggling?”
The pain goes even further to ask, “What is wrong with me? I shouldn’t have these problems! I should be over this by now! Why can’t I get it together?”
After a complete dump of verbal frustration, they immediately start backpedaling, apologizing for expressing so much negativity. With overtones of religious condemnation, they say, “I know I should be better than this.”
As this person gives me room to share my input, my reply often surprises them. What I have to say is simple, yet incredibly powerful, speaking to what they really need in the midst of their battle.
“It’s ok that you are not ok.”
Some are shocked by this. They are used to receiving the shameful disappointment of others, who wonder why they can’t just get over it. They are also used to hearing about the next three steps they should apply, or a packet of to-do lists they will never be able to fulfill.
In the midst of this, many never consider the power of God’s love to first accept them, right where they are in their junk.
We’re taught the power of God’s loving acceptance at salvation, but somehow, we lose sight of it for the rest of the journey. Yet this precept cannot be skipped over. The first experience for healing of the heart involves experiencing the complete and unconditional acceptance of God’s love.
Unless this environment is set in your heart, you will waste your life trying to heal and change with cycles of self-help steps. The power of love will be missing from your life and you will struggle with a lifetime of self-pressure and frustrated living. Before you take any healing steps, you must learn to engage self-compassion and lovingly accept yourself, right where you are.

God waits with open arms to love us. He wants to be known too. I think that is so cool. He wants us to know Him and why wouldn't we want to know someone with so much unconditional love for us

This is awesome! So, so, so profound a teaching. Life-giving, life-changing and paradigm-shifting words: “His (God’s) first step for you is not to fix you; His first step for you is to love you.” God bless you; thank you for your ministry.

Thank you for your words. May God continue to bless you. What is love. I think perhaps I have a wrong thought of what it is. I NEED to talk to someone. Please pray that I may find someone like you to counsel me. I know Jesus is there but I must have conversation to help. It's been three years of God taking care of me. I want to be sure its God not my mind. Help please. You and your wife inspire me.

I understand the call but while I’m helpful to others I often feel helpless. Mark and Mellissa are so awesome their platform is futuristic and soundly biblical synonymously.

Thank You so much Father, thank you Mark for allowing God to work in your heart and now to use you bring freedom to the church of Christ.
If God accepts and loves me, who am l not to accept and love myself? Therefore, I accept and love myself because God accepts and loves me right where I am at now.
    Thank You Father again.

Not so long ago , I said the very same thing to myself.
" If God totally, unconditionally Agape loves me as I am , and where I am in myself good , bad or indifferent, who am I to not accept and love myself too ? " That really helped me to let go of self rejection and self condemnation and so forth , and I felt alot of freedom just to be me . Unfortunately, I began to fall back again into the old stinking thinking minus the self acceptance....
I need to constantly restate the truth of God's Grace, Love and Forgiveness and acceptance towards me whether I'm 'fixed' or not in the ways I feel I ought to be ....👌🆓✝️

Abba Father, I come into complete agreement with this message and matthew 16:24, 2 corinthians 6:14-18 binding to take up ones own cross daily following Jesus, as well in my life as in the lives of family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, acquitances, my enemies and the body of Christ, binding to hell to take up the cross of another daily, in the name and by the blood of Jesus Christ, amen and hallelujah!
