It's pretty amazing the fact that Zatanna, and not Superman, was the first hero not related to Batman that appeared in the DCAU. That shows how much Dini and Timm wanted to introduce her. Not that I blame them 😉

*Fun fact:* Before JLU, Zatanna also made a brief cameo in "The New Batman Adventures" episode "Chemistry", in which she attends with Jason Blood Bruce Wayne's wedding, a clear hint that she knows Batman's secret identity

I mean, he practically revealed it in her episode of BtAS. He used the nickname that only he ever used for her, while in costume. They even acknowledged their past, at the end of the episode, when he was training under her father.

Here's a theory. There have been movies about magicians who appear to be doing real magic. Such as the Now You See Me films, The Illusionist, The Prestige, and Wonka. However, the question comes to mind that if these people have discovered real magic, then why are there so many problems and challenges they face that they can't solve with it? Because it's not real magic, but the power of technology and invention, complex devices and advanced techniques that only work under ideal or well planned circumstances. For all we know Zatanna and some other magic users in the DCAU maybe use advanced or even alien tech to create illusions. With Zatanna's inclusion into the JLA, she would certainly have access to not only Batman's advanced tech, but also those from members that originate off world.

I’m confused, in that first “trick” shown at the end, where she made a bank disappear, if I remember that episode correctly, Batman immediately called out how the trick was done with mirrors and also informed Zantana that the magic debunker she brought on the show she challenge to figure out how it was done, faked not knowing.
Batman goes on to tell her that the debunker not only knew how the trick was done but used it against her to frame her when he stole the money out of the bank.
TLDR: That first instance of using reverse magic speak, her trick didn’t use magic at all.

And with that implication, Zatanna may have deliberately made herself be framed so to keep tabs and check out the abilities and also identity of the Batman... magical girls/witches can always do what they want in their whimsical and dangerous lives, I'll say.
Sidenote: Strange how B: TAS did less fellow superhero cameos than X-Men: TAS and Spider-Man: TAS combined. Even Superman: TAS onwards upped the ante, thus leading to the Justice League era.

Zatanna and her Dad are also genuinely good at regular old stage magic, like, as good at that as they are at the real stuff. Depending on the canon it's either a 'hide where they'd least expect a sorcerer to be' or a 'she saves the real magic for big finales and prefers to use the tricks and stage acts for the most part'.
My issue with Zatanna is honestly that in modern stories she always either overshadows her dad or he's dead. Zatara has been around as long as Superman, dating back to 1938 and predating Batman, while Zatanna only came about in 1964 and only started doing her own things separate from her dad in the late 70s.

  • @rampant1apart

If that’s true, that makes the old animated episode kinda funny. Zatanna and Bruce got into real fights in that episode, but Zatanna never used a spell to fix it because she must have figured, “Naaaaaaaaah, we got this.” Haha.

      - It’s strongly hinted that John Zatara (Zatanna’s dad) is no longer alive, which makes the contemporary DC Universe continuity.
      - Bruce Wayne’s focus for justice wasn’t on adversaries who used true magic. But because criminals were generally “superstitious and cowardly,”. he decided to learn stage magic techniques that could enable him to understand and combat the criminal mindset, from dramatic entrances and misdirecting traps to escape artistry and concealment of items to surprise and confound.
      - DCAU creatives probably weren’t allowed to use John Constantine or any of the Vertigo Comics properties.

Uhhhh yeah. No shit. Zatanna is a magician (as in a real one), that's always been her superpower. And she learned how to do magic from her father Zatarra. That's her whole entire backstory in the comics.
Did you seriously not know this? Isn't this channel owned by DC Comics??

It is not owned by DC whatsoever 😅 And we made this based on the sheer volume of times this gets asked in our comments. Thanks!
