The Queen visited New York within days of 9/11 and attended a service at an Angican church where she delivered an eulogy to the victims in which she observed that " grief is the price we pay for love".
President Biden quoted that line from the Queen in his memorial speech today.

The message from Queen Elizabeth given at St Thomas's Episcopal Church on 5th Ave on 21st September 2001 was actually offered on her behalf by Sir Christopher Meyer, her Ambassador to the US. The Queen visited New York three times during her reign, in 1957, 1976, and briefly to visit the WTC Memorial in 2010, when she was 84.

One of the British/ American victims of 9/11 was Rick Rescorla a Cornishman by birth. He is credited with saving over 2600 of his colleagues by leading them down in groups, singing traditional Cornish songs he learned in his childhood, through a bullhorn to keep their spirits up. He was last seen on his way back up leading some firefighters when the tower collapsed. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2019.
His story is worth some research because it was an eventful one. He joined the British Army at 16 and became a paratrooper, then joined the American Army and went to Vietnam where he won a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry
If you ever get a copy of the book "We Were Soldiers Once...And Young" by Hal Moore, the soldier on the cover is Rescorla, who was actually in 2/7th Cavalry and was used to reinforce Moore's 1/7th Cav. There is a belief that Mel Gibson deliberately wrote Rescorla out of the film We Were Soldiers precisely because he was British.

I was in Sierra Leone in West Africa when Her Majesty ordered the playing of the United States National Anthem 2 days after the attacks, my unit was in Afghanistan 26 days later.

She was even spotted shedding tear during a church service as she broke protocol and joined in singing ... She also visited the World Trade Center site in 2010 and toured the site of the memorial as it was finished off ... The Queen made sure the attacks were remembered in Britain again on the 20th anniversary of the atrocities ... Thank you SoGal, The Queen & people who lost their lives on 9/11 will never be forgot.

Playing the US Anthem wasn't just a simple break from protocol, it was a huge chasm that flew in the face of an almost religious level tradition that is more than 350 years older than the US itself. We knew at that point that we would stand with the US no matter what or where. 26 days after that anthem was played the advance party from my Regiment landed in Afghanistan, 5 days after that so did I.
They played the tune which was written by an Englishman John Stafford Smith (1750-1836) wrote the music,To Anacreon in Heaven so really no protocol's were broken
Greetings from across the pond. The relationship between the US and UK will always prevail, no matter how much our mutual leaders try to mess it up. So many Americans living in the UK, so many Brits living in the US. They're all getting on just fine :)
The Queen used to wear those outfits so she would stand out. She also sent subtle messages with her jewellery, especially broches.
She definitely stood out, but in a good way.
I will never forget 9/11 terrorism attack and I am still surprised that the Queen Elizabeth died and I hope she will be remembered as important and at peace ✌🙏
As one who remembers the distress and shock waves across the UK when Kennedy was shot ( I was 20 years old) it reaffirms that friends and allies do share in good times and the tragedies.
I was 24 days old when your President JFK was shot and killed dead. But I well remember - alas - 9/11. It remains the most awful day I am able to recall, notwithstanding the sad passing of Her Majesty Queen Elisabeth II.
She was a remarkable woman and will always be a credit to our United Kingdom.
I was 8. I remember my late mother sitting me and my three brothers down in front of the TV as we watched the news, my mother was crying and even though I was very young at the time I can remember thinking that something very bad had happened, I also remember the sense of shock everywhere.
It was with UK-based Americans in mind that Her Majesty requested this. What a Leader!?
Just a note: most likely the Americans in the crowd are the ones with their hands over their heart, which is a unique American gesture to your anthem. Thanks for this video.

Think I’ve seen others. i.e. here’s a link of the Maastricht National Anthem being played & they have their hands on their hearts, Maastricht been around since the Middle Ages long before America was colonised? pretty sure the Irish do also but I could be wrong?

She lived through the WW2, her family staying in London during the bombing. Her father was determined to remain with his people.
The girls Elizabeth & Margaret were sent to Windsor. QEII joined the military & became a mechanic & driver during her service.
You look visibly moved by this reaction vid more than others, Sarah, and its a good thing, it means you have a heart. I'm a proud British Military Veteran and I was a serving soldier at the time when this happen, not long after I was sent to Afghanistan to find and 'bring justice' as it was put to me for the 9/11 events.
I would leave the armed forces a few years later having served 16 yrs for HM. I swore to defend HM in name, crown and dignity for my whole life, I like to think that I, and others like me, that took that same oath have done so with love of HM in our hearts, HM will never be replaced and never forgotten, she was a peerless example of true dignity, respect and duty. A true exemplar of how one should conduct ones own life.
On the subject of NYC, my brother was in New York City the day of the 9/11 attack, for the longest time we were waiting for news of his situation, thankfully God saw to save him and his wife by keeping them in Time Square at the time of the attacks thankfully a few miles away, they were on their way to the WTC following Times Square to see and photograph the WTC Twin Towers and other WTC buildings, as tourists they had no strict schedule, thankfully they never got there, or we (my family) could be mourning their loss too.

@@SoGal_YT Thank you Sarah, for your appreciation of my brother and sister in laws welfare, however my service was not done for praise or respect from others but as a duty, having been the 5th person in my family tree to have served (5 generations) as soldiers, (all army).
It was my duty to serve, not my choice to serve (if you get my meaning, I wasn't ordered if that what you think, more obliged by the weight of family history, incidentally 3 of my brothers also served only one of us that did not was my sister).
I'm impressed by your desire (and it is a desire) or to put it more eloquently, your thirst for knowledge, be it about history, geography and what I see, the UK.
I am happy to share my knowledge of history with you not just UK but world history and geography as these are some of my greatest interests too.

We do not forget 9/11 - the 2 men seen briefly were Prince Andrew and a gentleman from the US Embassy. There were many Americans outside the gates, many who were tourists who could not get home because all US airports were locked down but also many who were living and working here.
As a family, we spent the 3 days after the attacks online to Americans, mostly in Britain but also elsewhere, just talking, grieving being whatever help we could. I was actually at work when it happened and my husband rang to tell me and we watched the towers fall on TV - then our boss told us to go home. She stayed in the office trying to get in touch with several of our clients who were Americans working over here. We felt useful as we seemed to be getting better news coverage and we could pass it on. The Queen followed what was happening and kept in close touch with our Embassy and your President. We sent specially trained rescue teams using dogs and later, forensic specialists.
We will miss our Queen and grieve her passing, but know this, King Charles is a truly good man who will be a good friend and a thoughtful caring king - and wise - he has been training for this job all his life!

IIRC, the man in the grey suit at 5:57 is the US ambassador, who was invited by the Queen to witness the anthem being played. It is the only time the anthem of a foreign country has been played at the palace outside of visits by foreign leaders.

The playing of the USA Anthem was indeed a HUGE thing for us in the UK. We all knew what it meant. The Queen ordered it to happen. We loved it.
Having served with US Armed Forces as a member of UK Forces for the past 20 years on various Ops, the mutual respect and link between the countries has been a sight to behold. Thank you for paying tribute to HM. 9/11 was as much an attack on the UK as it was on the US. We are with you, and persecuted that accordingly. An amazing tribute...a country we once fought a war against, who is now one of our greatest allies, and honors us with our National Anthem. I'm NOT surprised the Queen was behind that. She was wonderful, my heart goes out to all those on that day and not just once a year.
It was a moving gesture by the Queen to instruct the playing of the US national anthem at Buckingham Palace after 9/11 and it was quite clear that this gesture resonated with Americans.
The Queen was addressing the United Nations in 2010, she continued to carry out Royal tours until 2015 (Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta being the last).
We were all shocked by 911 including the Queen she really rallied around to show her support to the American people at that time from what I remember😢. As did many at the centre of UK power- the prime minister etc. And all the western allies. Everyone was just so shocked and upset and angry that it could happen. I think there was also a kind of fear that the US government could over react from emotion and lash out to make things worse in the immediate aftermath- I'm not sure what exactly but it was just part of the shock everyone was feeling. People in government here felt they had to get involved and try to ensure cool heads. That's not meant to sound arrogant just what happened was so shocking we felt protective of the US. The mood here was real palpable shock, anger, disbelief, sadness, grief and solidarity.
I was randomly watching videos here when I came across this video, and what a video 😅 I was very moved, it's a gesture that seems simple, but is a testament to how great she was! May she be resting in peace 🙏🏻

I am in Australia and I was going to say the mourning is probably more subdued in other Commonwealth countries. However when I think about it - it has been pretty full on here. I am in Australia. There have formal tributes at the Queen’s death, bells toil g,mwreath laying at our parliament houses by politicians, our Federal Parliament has suspended sitting until after the funeral and our flags will fly at half mast until next week. We will have a national day of mourning on Thursday 22 September 2022, which has been gazetted as a public holiday.
The reason day of mourning has been delayed to after the funeral is that the Prime Minister and Governor General are in London for the funeral. They will lead the national day of mourning.
The other interesting thing is that when Charles was formally proclaimed King, the mourning was suspended. Gun salutes and happy bells. All the flags were meant to be raised to full mast. I don’t think our local council got the memo about this as they were at half mast on the town hall last Sunday.
The changing of the guard - 12th Sept 2001 - the bands marched the new guard to the Palace with the US marches "The Thunderer" and the "Stars and Stripes Forever"

At the Changing of the Guard ceremony when the Star Spangled Banner was played, there are two regiments in the footage. The ceremony is all about standing down the Old guard and the arrival of the New Guard. In the clip you can see members of the Coldstream Guards and their regimental band, who are the Old Guard. The New Guard [who never seem to get mentioned in coverage of this] is from the 1st Battalion Devon and Dorset Regiment. It is not normally a ceremonial unit, so they are wearing the dark blue No 1 Dress, while you can see a glimpse of their bandsmen at 6:16, wearing white and green pith helmets and ceremonial red tunics. Very few of the spectators will be British - mostly you see overseas tourists at the Changing of the Guard. The Americans, I guess, are those with hand over heart while the anthem is played.
On that day in question, I was working in my Accident & Emergency Dept - you would know it as an 'ER', at St. Thomas' Hospital, South London. The footage of those standing behind the gates of Buckingham Palace were (for the most part) visiting American tourists - the giveaway was that they placed their hand over their hearts - as I understand you are wont to do on the playing of the Stars & Stripes. As far as can be discerned, HM The Queen took the directive to amend the salute to her almost instataneously - If nothing else, she was steadfastly empathetic to everyone across the globe - particularly at a time when this assault on American soil cost the lives of so many innocents, & irrespective of nationality. I have no doubt that HM The King Charles will similarly carry out his duties as Head of State & the Commonwealth with aplomb, but I suppose it is worth noting that he has some big shoes to fill in regard to his Mother's reign....a new era awaits us all. Thank you for sharing these significant events, albeit rather tinged with pathos.
Well, when you consider who fired the rockets that left the red glare, it was quite a moment. Normally. national anthems are played for important visitors from friendly nations - as you pointed out - and this gesture of solidarity was unique.

The British Garden was done by The Ground Force Team from BBC1’s Ground Force tv programme, I saw the programme. The man standing next to Prince Andrew is the american 🇺🇸 ambassador at the time.
I'm pretty sure that the gentleman stood next to Prince Andrew is William Farrish, the US ambassador, I believe he shared a love of horses with her majesty.

Australia 🇦🇺 has “OFFICIALLY” declared Prince Charles as the new King 👑 of Australia 🇦🇺 over this past weekend with all the traditional hype that goes with in front of Parliament House, Canberra & Parliament House in Sydney. A 21 gun salute concluded this ceremony. I also want to add that now that our beautiful Queen has passed we will be adding INTO our constitution- Recognising The Aborigines & Torres Strait Islanders as Australia 🇦🇺 is not 200 years old but 65,000 years old! A new ERA is now upon us!!!

@@SoGal_YT The Commonwealth on “ADDING” into The Australian Constitution- The acknowledgment of our “First Nations” People? It’s HUGELY accepted as The Commonwealth is about “Inclusivity”. As King Charles stated in his address, that were all from different backgrounds but he will continue to SERVE The Commonwealth with our Freedoms upholding the principles with loyalty, respect & love ❤️. The integration of Our First Nations People is absolute now. With even our media news outlets acknowledging the land we’re on with its proper name before going into whatever the news may be!

It says something about the queen and our special relationship that they would play the star spangled banner at Buckingham palace, considering that the star spangled banner is about how America refused to lower our flag in surrender to the British during overwhelming bombings on our civilian fort.
9/11 tended to get lost in the passing of Queen Elizabeth this side of the pond this year. It is remembered in a few places and companies each year as quite a few UK citizens lost thier lives, some having just taken up a new posting. Yes we do refer to it as 9/11 and not as 11/9 as the date would normally be written/spoken here.
In the Netherlands we call it 9/11 as well. It has become less a date and more the name of the event

11th September 2022 was a Sunday, therefore although many of us in Britain will remember the anniversary of the awful attacks on the USA in 2001, many of us will now remember it as the day of church services in which we gave thanks for and commemorated the late Queen Elizabeth II while also acknowledging the accession of the new King Charles III. The former were marked by sombre moods, reflective words, flags at half mast and black attire; the latter saw flags re-raised and a more festive tone, though still with elements of mourning as we continued to reflect on the passing of the Queen. "9/11" will forever be a date to stir mixed emotions, on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Queen valued, and did much to preserve, the "special relationship" between the UK and the USA. Her constancy was a significant means by which she preserved it: whilst UK Prime Ministers and US Presidents are limited to fixed terms in office, the British Monarch endures through all those changes of personnel; thus s/he provides a fixed point for both nations.
You summarised that clip very well, SoGal - we in the UK were appalled by what happened in the US on that shattering day, and we were only too happy to show our solidarity with you Americans by having your national anthem on our lips and in our ears to honour the lives that were so cruelly taken. In the days since we lost our Queen, we have felt a similar solidarity from you and from other lands around the world, in your expressions of sympathy and respectful words about someone whose presence was felt around the globe and recognised even by staunch republicans.

But the people crying at the gates of Buckingham Palace were crying tears of pure sadness.
I doubt anyone had the foresight to feel gratitude as we literally watched 9/11 happen live on TV just two days prior.
It was incredibly traumatic.
I was fortunate enough to visit Ground Zero in 2014.
It was your Armed Forces day and Manhattan was super quiet but only by Manhattan standards.
Ground Zero was indescribably quiet though.
As we approached the memorial I looked at the lively streets full of vibrancy and life and was immediately reminded of the scenes of abject terror from those same streets.
Those fleeing for their lives, and those searching for the missing in the weeks that followed.
Most of the world were horrified.
I guess we viewed it in the same way we do school shootings; Why attack innocent people? Why?
22 years on and I recall it as though it were yesterday.

I think at the time, so many american citizens were effectively trapped in London because of shutdown of air travel, her majesty thought it would be a gesture of solidarity with the United States.
It was her wish that the anthem was played, it was against normal protocol if you like, since it was the first time ever that another nations anthem had been played in that circumstance.

Interesting Fact the Unit on Royal Guard Duty at Buckingham house at the that time was my former Regiment the 1st Battalion The Devonshire and Dorset Regiment. Those are the troops in blue No.1 dress in sloped arms eyes right which is a parade salute to some of your embassy staff who were standing off to their right. Thank you for your interest.

A huge majority of people in the UK have never known any other monarch. Not only was she Queen Elizabeth ll of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but she was Queen to the whole world. She was quite simply THE most famous person in the world. Apparently, she even has her own entry in a German dictionary, there is the entry "Königin" meaning a Queen. And then there is an entry "Die (the) Queen" meaning Queen Elizabeth ll.
Just remember that although we have our differences, we are strongly connected! That’s why it annoys me when Americans are disrespectful towards the UK, just remember it’s where your nation hails from and that’s a good thing. French and Spanish colonies were not so lucky and do not have a commonwealth connection. Lean into it and be proud of your beginnings 🇬🇧 ❤️ 🇺🇸
The Star Spangled Banner was played at Buckingham Palace because the Queen personally ordered it. It was incredibly moving and showed how much the US (the real US, not the MAGA idiots) matters as an ally to the UK

I'm a Brit, but have 4 cousins in the USA and they have kids and grandkids by the ton. There is way more of my blood in the USA than in England and I love the USA. Hoping to go back next year to visit my relatives in OR and also NM. You may say you are an American and not understand Britain, but really, due to history (the war of independence, got rid of the Monarchy), we are bound, entwined, by history, language and culture more than you might imagine... personally, I love that.... P.S. I have been lucky enough to visit NYNY twice and go up the South Tower on both occasions, so that weighs very heavy on my heart on this date.

The section with the band playing the anthem was particularly moving. Lot of US tourists in the crowd outside I suspect. The chap standing with his hand to his heart was probably the US ambassador, it's not a gesture that Brit's tend to do.
I believe you are correct. IIRC the Queen invited him to witness the anthem being played.

I lived in America on 9/11 and still don't understand why 21 years on, hate is a terrible thing, The Death of the Queen too has an effect on me too as someone from Ireland with all the history of The Crown, Elizabeth II came here in 2011 and repaired much of the damage done of centuries, King Charles III has become a very regular visitor here unthinkable in past times and finally seeing Peter Jennings RIP again took me back to 9/11 May they all rest in eternal peace.
The link between the US and UK is also in other strange ways. For example, Ironically, the melody Key assigned to accompany the lyrics of “The Star-Spangled Banner” was a popular English drinking song called “To Anacreon in Heaven.” Written around 1775 by John Stafford Smith, the song honored the ancient Greek poet Anacreon, a lover of wine.

There's a _lot_ of US ex-pats in the UK, particularly in London but spread around too; I work with a couple, plus the tourists on top - and I'd wager on that occasion the US Embassy (the old one it would have been) in London was told that was going to happen too so probably a fair few embassy staff turned up also (it's not far from Buckingham Palace, easy walking distance).
Two events that still feel unreal to this day are 9/11 and The Wave that shook the World ... there are times when I spend hours or even days re-watching it all and reading about again ... just to try and believe it really did happen. The sounds and the images will never leave me ... and I still feel shocked to the core by both events. I was at work on 9/11 and I remember my friend saying a plane had hit the Towers ... and we just said stop messing around .. because we believed it could never happen. Such events changed everything that we took for granted and simply turned logic upside down.

9/11 is a day etched in the global memory. The murder of JFK, the first footsteps on the Moon, the Queen's Coronation, and the release from prison of Madeba, are similarly engraved in my conscious. On 9/11 I was in the air from Toronto to Heathrow when our aeroplane was diverted, first to Schiphol and then to Hamburg. We aboard were told it was an issue with ground visibility. Only on disembarkation did we see the news on television in the arrivals lounge. Honestly, at first glance I wondered why so many were watching an action adventure movie with such rapt attention. It took a few minutes for reality to dawn on tired, addled minds. Several of my US friends worship at St Thomas's Episcopal Church on 5th Ave in Manhattan. One of them was lost to us on that dreadful day.

Even if you hate the royal family you have to love the Queen. She was the most powerful and influential person on the planet.
Playing the American National Anthem at that time of grieving was an even bigger than most realise. The tune was borrowed from a rude 18th century British drinking song, celebrating wine, women and song.

Out of politeness, it was expressed by Her Majesty as a request, due to protocol, it is regarded as an order.
This has been known to go tragically wrong as when King Henry II expressed his frustration with Thomas Becket by uttering the words "What miserable drones and traitors have I nourished and brought up in my household, who let their lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born cleric?" (wording according to contemporary sources). This was interpreted by those who heard it as a command that it should not have been allowed, and they set forth initially to capture Becket, but upon his refusal to answer the summons, to kill him.
Henry II was mortified, prostrated himself in public as penance, and the four knights who had committed the act fled from the Kingdom into Northumbria and were excommunicated.
In reparation, Becket's sister was appointed Abbess of Barking.
The monarchy has been extremely careful in any public expression of criticism at either church or government due to this, so any request is carefully considered beforehand.

Im British I was 17 when 9/11 hit and I think the world was at a standstill I remember when I seen it on the news the first thing, I said was OMG NO what happened.
British are sort of Different, we do the impossible things 😊
