"Terrorized": Gaza Poet Mosab Abu Toha on Being Stripped, Jailed & Beaten by Israeli Forces

We speak with celebrated Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha for his first interview after he was jailed and beaten by Israeli forces, when he was detained at a checkpoint in Gaza while heading to Rafah with his family. He was rounded up with scores of other Palestinians. "I felt humiliated. I felt terrified and terrorized by this army because they were ordering us to do everything at gunpoint," says Toha, now in Cairo. He calls on Western leaders to stop supporting the violence against Palestinians. "If you can't stop the war, if you can't stop the carnage, the genocide, just stop financing it."

It's awful how we can take so much for granted. I'm a woman and to hear these women don't have access to sanitary items is deplorable. Not only that not to have access to the basic needs to bathe, this is inhumane!!! The smell of death, no access to medical care, especially emergency care, no prenatal care, this is disgusting and disgraceful! What have we become? Gaza has its own terrorist group government that restricts freedoms. No freedom of the press, women forced to wear hijabs and other Islamic rules-basic things we can do in the West. Israel has no obligation to let them through their borders, and rightly so. Palestinians had no problem leaving to go to Iraq to join IS IS and hence kill Iraqis, most of whom were children.
People aren’t free within their own countries. Look what’s happening in Sudan with their civil war. Look at the hundreds of terrorist groups in countries creating havoc. Same with the Palestinian Territories (they aren’t countries.) Terrorism is ruining countries and Israel is surrounded by several terrorist groups. The top guys of Hamas are living high off the hog and not even in Gaza. It is in their interest to perpetuate conflict which is not about land. Had they chosen to live civilly, this wouldn’t be happening.

They are actually bombing themself. An estimated 10-20% of rockets they shoot into Israeli civilian areas are misfires and land in the Palestinian area. It's quite probable that one such misfire claimed over 800 victims as the rocket hit a parking lot near the hospital. The Human Rights Watch investigation is not conclusive but it's a more likely explanation. It looks like this: people donate money for Palestinians to have drainage and water supply, Hamas turns those pipes into rockets. The democratic world funds 19 hospitals in Palestine, and Hamas puts inside their HQs... local people are either acting indifferently or outright supporting (they were holding public events for local people to watch live-streamed terror attacks and the turnout was very good). You can find plenty of evidence of these things just google... Israeli forces are actually calling phones under the addresses which they intend to bomb. I cannot remember any military conflict where any nation would made such an effort to protect civilians even at the risk of warning their adversaries

Mosab, I have heard your cry and demand for justice and I have written my US Senator demanding he make a public statement to denounce the war and I have again sent money to the NGO which I support which has been providing aid to Gazans since the 1980s. I can only hope and pray others will do the same.

Hamas has run the Gaza Strip with an iron fist, not because of Israel, but because they are Authoritarian, and any "Country" of Palestine would be run just like any other NOT FREE Country in the Middle East. They have to create a government along the lines of a Democracy, or their conditions will never change. I talk about pregnant women in Gaza, women with difficult pregnancies, women in labour, giving birth, birthing complications and caring for a new baby, with nothing, no food and water, not even the luxury to stay in one place. Heard a horrible story of how the nurse felt when leaving them - they carried the one neonate who they thought had the best chance of survival on the road with them when they were forcibly evacuated.
