This show is...thought provoking. I love this God He basically says "You're not wrong for being angry at your dad. You're not wrong for not wanting to forgive him either. But it's my job to forgive people. And everyone falls. No matter how hard people try to be good, they all fall. Do they all deserve to burn for eternity? No. That doesn't make them horrible people. It makes them human." The best part is that he isn't trying to excuse the behavior of Bob's father. He's trying to explain it.
erttheking Just makes you wonder why some shows like this one barely made it to the end of their first season while other shows such as Mega Babies not only survived, but thrived. Believe it or not, cartoons were the first things that made me question exactly how sane the human race was.
+Bernard Crow Like sym-bonic titan is another good example of this although if it was allowed to continue it would have been insanely popular like avatar level cartoon network canceled it for the stupidest reason ever.
+erttheking There were two main things that struck me from the message at the end of this episode: 1. Morality is an extremely subjective issue. What makes one individual a good person can be radically different from another person. While Bob's father does appear to be a callous jerk, this was probably a result of his own upbringing not only leaving him bitter and cynical, but possibly warping his perception of right and wrong. 2. To cause less suffering than we have had to endure is a far more selfless and noble thing than most people realise. A lot of people end up retaliating for the things they suffered far more than what they had to be mad about, and feel like they can rationalise it no matter how far they go, even against those that don't deserve it. For all the Bob's father did to him, he never tried to excuse his behaviour or act like he was in the right (Bob didn't even KNOW about his grandfather until God explained it). He just did what he thought was best, even if it didn't look like it. It's ideas like these that make something like this a true work of art. It doesn't force a right and wrong answer, it just presents you information and opinions and lets you decide for yourself.
Yea this episode really makes you think and put things in perspective. They only showed four episodes of this on NBC until they decided to air the whole show on adult swim? Cuz I saw it on adult swim I make have missed some episodes like this one though.
+erttheking tbh with you. That's how God is in the Bible. (or at least Jesus) Jesus wasn't perfect in the slightest. He got angry, he got sad. He made mistakes. He hanged out with sex workers and tax collectors. Hell, Jesus even called God out in one verse. It's just modern day Christians making him look completely perfect all the time, the same ones who got offended by this cartoon.
"Passing on a softer punch." That's a very interesting idea. I'm Christian and I gotta say, this show does seem interesting. While I do understand some people's problem with God not being perfect, I've been conditioned to accept this sort of thing as fiction and besides, this episode did give a good message.
Someone I watch commenting on the video of someone else I also watch...HALF LIFE 3 CONFIRMED!!! I made this comment with Fawfuls Minion too...on a MysteriousMrEnter video oddly enough.
It's nice to see someone who's this understanding for a change. I've always liked your videos before, but this is a really cool thing for you to say. Thank you Josh. By the way, thank you for your service. Semper fi.
+BLACKIESBOY I actually see the God of the Bible being sort of like this. In the Old Testament, you had to be the judge because there was no Messiah. in the NT, God solves the problem with a personal sacrifice. I personally view God in this very light.
@@ordinarychef To be fair Clone High in the USA was canceled before the season ended but there is still a cult following, enough to even bring it back 15 years later. But I do agree that it did affect the following. I was so upset when it taken off the air, I was 12 and I loved it, enough to own the official dvd. It makes me sad that this show doesn't get the love it really deserved.
I like how this show got cancelled, but Mr.Pickles is still on air. "A tasteful cartoon with personified God and Lucifer." OFFENSIVE! GET IT OFF THE AIR! "A raunchy cartoon invented just for the sake of offending people." Great show! People who don't like it don't understand humor.
I can do without the sarcasm! The problem is that Mr. Pickles was approved more by a more adult network, Adult Swim. That's the best reason I can think to explain why God, The Devil and Bob is over on NBC, but Adult Swim still carries Mr. Pickles to this day. It needs to end very soon. April 20, 2019, 11:20pm
Funny shows that are at least decent and come from a good place gets canceled or end but shows that are mean spirited constantly say fuck you to the audience and offend others get to be on forever sure there are tons of exceptions but many them are because of popularity and are on for too long
This version of the devil is actually more bible-accurate. Most depictions makes him like a red goat-man, when he really was described as an attractive man that would lure you into evil or something.
+MegaBlastvern Its depends on who's telling the story. Everyone agrees that he used to be the most beautiful of angels, but there's some debate on what happened after. Some texts say he & his minions retained their allure, but many common texts today insist that God also made him ugly when he was cast out.
"God said the Devil would be attractive."-Ned Flanders, Animated Atrocities #35 That quote from Ned about Lady Gaga was mildly amusing in an otherwise terrible episode. April 20, 2019, 11:25pm
One of the episodes, in which God forgets the Devil's birthday, actually has God describe Lucifer as "He was my best angel... my bright shining light...", and Satan, for his part, resented God's favoritism towards Humans, as he said "Knowing you were good, but never good *enough."*
I'm a Christian, and I've got to say that the religious jokes are pretty funny XD God leaving His porchlight on one time and it being the light at the end of the tunnel. Purgatory being made up by the devil. They're all great, and I think that this series had so much going for it. Kinda sad that it stopped so quickly cause some people got ticked off.
Holy crap, God's voice is so smooth. Like, wow that's some good voice acting. James Garner apparently played him? That's just like a perfect voice here.
We must dedicate this Admirable Animations video to the loving memory of James Garner. He died back in July 19, 2014. It was a few months and 10 days before this Admirable Animations video. April 20, 2019, 11:23pm
That really hit home for me...I even teared up a bit. My parents were emotionally and verbally abusive and manipulative and I know where Bob is coming from. Things are a lot better now...I mean, I haven't completely forgave them and I am not trying to preach forgiveness because I am sick of forgiveness being treated like the cure-all. However, I realize my parents haven't had the easiest lives either. Does it excuse what they did to me, course not! But having an explaination helps me ease up a bit and not be so harsh to them.
I know this comment is three years old at this point, but... They didn't watch it. The group that was offended so much that they demanded the cancellation of the show never watched the show to begin with. They objected to the title and that was all there was to it.
@@jesusnthedaisychain It's so nice to think how little has changed since then. It may not be the Christians making a fuss anymore, but it's still the same.
@@BokanProductions True. It probably had low ratings because it was on Adult Swim, and besides that being mostly consisted of cartoons/anime you would only watch if you're a kid trying to stay up late to watch stuff your parents wouldn't let you watch while they're awake, a show as mild-mannered as this doesn't really fit in with the Adult Swim lineup. However, I do think that with streaming services nowadays or if it were to get picked up by a major network like Fox or NBC for prime time, a reboot would probably do much better. Then again, considering how offended modern non-Christians seem to be at the idea that God might exist, I could see people being offended. I would think they're idiots for being offended, but offended nonetheless.
The real issue with the show was that it was ahead of it's time. Many comedy adult shows back then had a lot of satirical views (some more nihilistic) of religion. Not only that but people weren't opened minded and accepting in terms of beliefs in the 90's to 00's. Just know that while we'll never see the show grow, the premise, characters, and messages it had all took a step in the right direction, and we could all learn something from it.
***** That's also true, but that can be said for a lot of shows that overstayed their welcome. This was a show that was cut just as it was about to grow, and had it been given a chance (like at the least two seasons) we could've had a very memorable show in our hands. For now though, we what we have is amazing enough, at least for me. :)
Graphomite That's true, and it takes a lot of guts to be someone like Alex Hirsch. Stephen Hillenburg tried to do the same thing with Spongebob, but the studio wanted to milk it dry for it's worth. At that point, he felt had no choice but to leave, and we all know how that song and dance went. That said, I'm glad Hirsch got what he wanted in the end with his show. :D
MrZee Yeah. When it comes to the super successful shows, a lot of the time it's the studios' fault. Especially when it comes to shows that don't have a cohesive storyline and therefore no necessary climax to plan. It can be easy for creators to not think ahead from the getgo and wind up losing control of their own work. But that's why its so important that they do.
What I really like about this show is that it does a great job of humanizing both God and the Devil, but retaining some of their "divine" nature. Neither of them actually understand what it's like to be human, since they're only on one side of the moral spectrum while humans go back and forth. I really enjoyed this depiction of God, doesn't quite line up with my actual perception of him, but for the purposes of the show I'm completely on board with it. How can you not love God blowing off the Devil by telling him to "Go to hell"? The dynamic between God and the Devil was also pretty fun, especially the part where the Devil admitted that the only reason he turned to Evil was because his good deeds were being overshadowed by God's own. "You don't know what it was like, growing up in his shadow, knowing I could be good, but never good enough" "You think that's why you turned to evil?" And of course, the characters were in general really well written, and the comedy stayed solid. My personal favorite episode is the one where The Devil quits, taking all the evil in the world with him. In a world with no lust, no anger, no jealousy or any other negative emotions, God can explain to Bob why the Devil sticks around, humans need to grapple with good and evil for their decisions to have weight. Without Evil, being Good is meaningless. I believe God doesn't just want us to be a bunch of soulless puppets who just do whatever he wants, he wants us to live, and the double-edged sword of free will is a part of that experience.
don't forget God tells that to Bob an episode or 2 before that as well when Bob is critical of God not interceding with the Devil dating Megan. Bob asks him why he would let something like that happen and God says "if I wanted to intercede all the time I would've created a world full of puppets". This show was pretty circular in that most of the episodes followed a similar plot but it's gonna be a little formulaic when you are dealing with the Devil and God
God does know what it's like though- He was one. And still is. Jesus becoming human is a huge plot point. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet he did not sin.
As a complete agnostic who was raised religiously, I can say that God's lines in this show shouldn't really offend anyone that isn't looking to be offensive. And I'm no Catholic, but the line about how Satan "made up Purgatory" is pretty damn hilarious as long as you don't overthink the line and read it as some intentional attack on Catholicism
+NintenDECS I was just coming down here to comment that! I'm Christian and I found the joke about purgatory hilarious because I was raised that it was fake
When thinking about the Bible, I do laugh about the how God is all knowing and yet asks questions like he didn't know, or ask people to do things just to tell them to stop at the last second. I understand how it can viewed as flawed, therefore funny to me.
I also love that you can't tell what the gender of the baby is at that line. Either it would be a man who likes to wear stereo typically feminine clothes or a woman who gets married to another woman. :)
I'm catholic and I want to watch this show. Probably because it actually portrays both God and the devil in a unique way, instead of making the show biased in favor or against them. Instead in this show, I feel I can have a friendly conversation with God. I would question him, yea, but this God doesn't seem like the guy who would go, "YOU DARE DEFY ME?!?" like in a lot of other satire shows.
+LMaruchan Most of my peronal problems with "the character of god as commonly portrayed by theists" stem from the fact that he's *supposed* to be perfect, flawless etc. The character of god as portrayed in God, the Devil and Bob is "pleasantly" flawed. Which makes his actions forgivable. At least I know that given infinite control over the universe, I'd probably screw up waaaay harder than this god ever has. From an atheists/agnostics perspective, this seems to be closer to how god should be viewed baseline instead of rejecting the concept based on the imperfect hailed as perfect that I know my emotions tend to hold in contempt. I.E. It's the kind of god that can lead to some interesting discussion and that is admirable among two groups that are usually offended by the very notion that the other might be correct. :L
The God of the Bible is largely a God Who is dynamic, Who is not changeless. There are passages that say God is changeless, but they don't cancel the ones that show God changing His mind. Both are important to the Biblical picture of God, not least because they stop God being tidily rationalised, and reduced to being either unchanging or dynamic. The emphasis on the changelessness of God in Christian thought is a result of the very strong Biblical emphasis on the unchangeable Faithfulness of God. There is no conceptual "equipment" for saying that God is both dynamically active & has dealings with men, and, that God is unchangeably Faithful - so the Bible shows us these different aspects of God's action, without trying to harmonise them tidily - it shows and tells at the same time. It presents them both, without trying to reduce either aspect to the other. I don't know if that explains things at all :)
It's a classy show, watch it. There's one episode where we'll...Lucy's fall from grace is kinda part of the theme of the episode and well. God: He was my best angle,my bright shining star. Devil: (Tears up) You never told me that... Bob: I think he's telling ya now... It's funny! Find episodes and enjoy.
Incidentally, part of the Devil's hangup is very much rooted in theological history - namely, "What's so great about *humanity* when God had all of us around before they showed up!?" He's basically the dutiful son in the "prodigal son" parable, rebelling because God bent over backwards for humanity time and again, but cast him and other Angels down to Hell when they basically rioted over it.
I really like this show. I'm religious, and it's not offensive in the slightest. It almost seems like it's mocking the contradictions and double standards of religion.
+otakuploader Yeah, because whenever I hear people preaching about God, they say he is there for everyone. So, I imagine everyone could have their own interpretation of what God looks like and it makes sense to not be offended by this incarnation of God that bases himself around the way Bob perceives him as. It is actually very smart.
I think the devil would show up in any form that he thinks would trick you. remember he's the devil, what he wants is for you to pervert and damage youreself
Agreed. As a Christian myself, I don't put much stock in the Bible because it's been rewritten so many times in so many different languages, that the original intent is almost a mystery (though I do believe in the fundamental aspects of the gospel). I also appreciate the way God is portrayed because it demonstrates that Christians have flaws too; as much as we like to act like we don't.
@@Nintendotron64 We have copies from the original language. People don't copy a translation when they can just translate the first ones. Put more stock in the bible and the Guy who made sure we'd know what He says through it.
As someone who's non-religious, I actually pleasantly like this depiction of God. He still seems omnipotent and all-knowing, and his will is still beyond mortal comprehension without context, but it's shown that ultimately he is a nurturing father to humans. I also like the way his words are used, as teachings to better oneself and to resolve your conflicts rather than something to be blindly followed without question.
I gotta say, Bob yelling at his son, who understands why his father is stressed, is actually a really memorable moment. Because on top of him apologizing for it, it creates some clever foreshadowing. He may not have known it, but abuse runs strong in the family, but is starting to ease up, thanks to his own father.
+TheMysteriousMrEnter I really do just want to say, thank you for reviewing this show. Honestly almost every episode of God, The Devil and Bob could be an Admirable Animation. Based on your sheer recommendation, I bought the entire series on Amazon (Just five bucks... of all things) I watched every episode, marathoned it twice, took in the special features and everything and... I wish there was more. The Devil was portrayed perfectly, God was awesome and Bob was just... a normal guy caught up in crazy, I think he took everything really well. I think the crew were really respectful on all fronts, the Wisdom God gives in the show, is actual Wisdom, I laughed, I cried, I contemplated, this show was beyond amazing on all fronts. God may have been a little vague at time but, it really worked to the shows advantage, he did seem all knowing yet kinda laid back, he often didn't interfere because like he said "People need to make their own decisions and give their own choices weight." I really think this show needs more. I've been linking my friends to this Admirable Animation to try and drum up publicity, course James Garner (Voice of God) is dead so, we would need a voice double for that. I hope someone would pick this up. Honestly I think this is a rare show that would benefit from Flash Animation due to it's rather simplistic animation style to begin with. Like the creators said it needs to be animated yes, but, Flash would make it a much smoother process for the show. I hope this comes back some day... it deserves it.
South Park: let's have Jesus be a bit of an idiot and kill the pope the way a ninja would. Also, God should be a lizard and Satan should be a friendly gay guy who gets treated like shit by Saddam Hussein. Nearly twenty seasons strong (although South Park is a great show). God, the devil, and Bob: let's humanise God, but still let him be God in the sense that he rules the universe, and is a very nice guy, let's have the devil be the devil. Show cancelled before end of first season. Censorship logic. Had to be a viewer count that led to the show's cancellation. If not, then what a strange thing to do.
Andrew Ryan God and the devil only show up in one maybe a few South Park episodes. The entirety of God, the Devil, and Bob had God and the Devil in almost every episode and made biblical jokes and references in almost every episode. Very minor ones that shouldn't be offensive at all. If the thing is constant, then it becomes a problem. Like, my problem with God, the Devil, and Bob's cancellation is that the jokes were minor and had no malicious intent at all! The show wasn't anti-Christian. It was just poking fun at religion. In fact, I LIKED how they humanized God and the Devil. It actually portrayed the whole "Humanity made in God's image" thing nicely, if you know what I mean. Also, the show actually had a decent viewer count. The show was cancelled due to a lawsuit if I remember correctly.
StarRider88 Well, many religious people are deprived of humour. They don't think twice about a joke, if it sounds like it might be insulting in one way or another, they go out of their way to get an apology or get a show cancelled.
P. Roud Tobi Mi well, I'm a christian, and I personally thought this portrayal, while not accurate, was not insulting at all. I thought it was good, and will probably watch more sometime.
Mason Clifton Yeah, that's why I said many and not most or all. I know that there are great christians out there, who let other people think and believe what they like and actually can laugh about stuff like this or admire it. It's just that the ones that are not like that make complaints and the ones who are like that can't do anything about it.
"That's okay dad. I know you're upset about grandpa." Something about that scene really got to me and I just felt myself tear up. Even that "pass a softer punch" scene too. I can't believe such a meaningful show got canceled. This one review of one episode made me feel more than entire franchises.
ive seen this happen so many times... - someone says "religious people find this offensive" when in reality one a very insignificant minority of religious people find that something offensive - people begin pointing fingers at religious people, insulting them and trying to mock their beliefs - religious people now ARE offended by the people trying to insult them look, try to act rational and take things with a grain of salt, dont pick fights if its only going to make things worse, respect other people's beliefs, be in god, a way of life, or nothing in particular, unless they are actively hurting someone, what is the problem with just letting someone believe what they want? and dont generalize
Brethren Toons maybe not this circumstance specifically, but the same general type of thing happens all the time. Extreme right wing nutjob makes comment on how religion is the saving grace and all those who don't embrace it are what is wrong with this world or some shit. Then as this guy says, people then begin attacking religion as a whole. This then offends religious people even though the majority aren't these ultra conservative morons, and then flame wars start.
joseaca I'm going to disagree vehemently with your statement that we should respect other people's beliefs. We shouldn't. We should respect their *right to have* those beliefs, but the beliefs can simultaneously be criticized, and in this case, all religion should rightfully be mocked and derided.
joseaca the problem is the minority for whatever reason has the loudest voice; especially nowadays. Sad part is it's usually the people that have the wrong idea about things
@@BrentStrong1997 um repeating people’s beliefs is still important too😅 but yes you can critique it in a polite way and do satire. It’s just horrible when people want religion to vanish from the face of the earth that’s all
This story reminds me of my grandpa. He was a mean, selfish man who married and had 4 kids but refused to take care of any of them. All money he made went to his hobbies and his booze. My poor grandma had to take a job to simply afford basic necessities like food and shoes (this was all in the 60's, when women didn't have many high paying work options). After the divorce, my dad (the eldest) got stuck living with grandpa while he finished high school but he also had to work a part time job and was verbally, psychologically, and sometimes even physically abused nearly every day. Nothing he ever said or did was good enough. My mother was listed as one of my fathers mistakes in grandpas eyes and she is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet. He'd even expressed actual disappointment in me and my siblings. Ever since we were little, my siblings and I would hide in grandpas basement with the tv every time we visited because, while we didn't know why yet, we felt very uncomfortable around him. He always had this look of a cranky old dog that looked liked he would bite you at any moment. A couple years ago, his years of booze and smokes caught up with him in a bad way and it finally seemed like the end was near. My aunt had called to tell my dad to come visit, to say good bye one last time. And my dad said no. He died with only his second wife, my aunt, and my youngest uncle by his side. From what I've heard, hardly anyone went to the funeral. He burned a lot of bridges in life and it cost him dearly. I'd heard stories that he may have acted the way he did in response to the abuse done by his own father but I don't accept that. Anyone who would let their child go hungry just so he could afford the latest in fancy toys and the finest boozes gets no excuses. Anyone who would wake their child up in the middle of the night in a drunken rage to verbally attack them gets no excuses. Is he in Heaven, is he in Hell? I don't know, I'll let God sort that out. But I have suspicions. He was not someone whose death I mourned.
I'm a Christian and I found this mildly entertaining. Don't know why this is offensive South Park depicts Jesus reading porn and directly calls all Christians retarded, and no one bats an eye. This show depicts the devil directly tempting someone and God wishing babies good luck, and everyone loses their minds.
RamtroStudios In all seriousness, more popular shows have portrayed God (and other religions for that matter) much worse, and they are allowed to live into their teens in terms of seasons!
***** Now I am actually curious. If this is the least offensive depiction of God, Satan, and religion in general, what is the most offensive depiction?
I'm really pissed this didn't get more episodes... One of the things I always hated about a lot of "adult shows" is they tend to portray religion, especially Christianity, as some kind evil corporation meant to brainwash people to not think outside the box when at least to my perspective it is a bit more than just that. I feel like whether or not you believe in something you should at least respect it. And that is what I feel like this show does or at least appears to do. It doesn't mock Christianity or any religion and make it seem like it is the worst thing ever. It shows some of the good and bad parts of it and shows how realistically some ideas can be placed. I like that God isn't an evil controlling being, but rather seems like a truly loving a concerned father in this version... If only other shows took notes.. You don't have to insult people in order to be funny. You can still respect what they believe and still make some good humor and perspectives from it.
Well, maybe not mockery. Like, obviously there are going to be people who DO mock it, but that doesn't mean it's right. I wouldn't mock an atheist or a person of a different religion myself, nor do I think anyone should mock anyone else's beliefs. But as for criticism, I absolutely agree - through having civil debates with people of different backgrounds, I've learned so many things about other religions and my own. In still firm in my belief, but, as they say, the more you know...
thegamer9302 If by mockery, you mean satirism, then yes, by all means. But straight up making fun of people for what they believe isn't funny or cute. It's just mean-spirited at best.
Well, yeah. Obviously, you can't censor someone's speech like that or tell them they can't mock another. What I mean is, morally, I don't think it's just OK to flat out mean-spiritedly mock someone. It's just my opinion, though.
Christians, people of MY FAITH AND RELIGION, were offended by this, even when there was a scene of God giving a heart warming pep talk to babies. Why and how where people offended and how and why was that enough to end this show so short? Did the Christians who were "offended" even watch this? I'm a Christian (though I don't go to church and I rarely read the bible), and I want to this show on DVD.
Most Christians don't, to my knowledge. I'm not sure if certain groups encourage/discourage reading it, but it seems a vast majority simply go to church and listen to bits of it.
As I cristian, I have to say 2 things: 1: I laughted at the purgatory joke, mainly because if fact there is no trace of such a thing in the bible 2: You know... maby is not a biblical representation of why god forgives people, bit it is an accurate representation of the perspective that god would want us to have with that issue. Man, it doesn't to be biblical, bit represents god's way of thinking way better than many religious portraits
I think the thing that really makes the message of this episode strong is the scene where Bob yells at Andy. I think it really drives home what they were getting at.
Such a great series with so many great jokes. I think my favourite is a scene where Bob and God are driving and when they stop the car Bob asks "What's the meaning of life?" and just as God starts to answer a train goes past and drowns the answer out. Just a smart funny comedy... that got pulled because it offended people who didn't even watch the damn thing.
***** The ratings weren't bad enough to warrant being cancelled after the 4th episode on their own, they still got about 6.5 million viewers when they were up against Who Want's To Be a Millionaire. The religious right boycotted and put pressure on local networks to stop them airing the show, that was a much bigger factor.
Watched this episode of yours years ago. Never seen the show but that softer punch speech stuck with me all these years and was a big help in processing my mom’s death. Just wanna say thanks for making this video.
As someone who is religious, I can say that this offends me far less than any other adult cartoon that makes fun of religion. Even though it's not a very good representation of biblical themes.
I am a Christian, and oh my god, I absolutely loved this show. God was the kind of guy I'd invite over to my house for dinner, or go bowling with on Saturday night. To those who hate this version of God, screw you. You really fail to realize that this is a cartoon, and not meant to be religiously correct. This show is actually one of the few adult cartoons I can actually enjoy. I only wish this show had ran for more than just one season. Please if anyone wants to resurrect this show, I believe fans like me will be more than thankful, especially if you can get a very good cast to voice the characters. #resurrectgodthedevilandbob
I'm a Christian myself (though a rather non-orthodox one at that) but from this review, I don't see what all the fuss is over with this God? I mean, even in the hospital scene (which, granted is an awkward scene), he seems to genuinely care and love these newborn babies. Also in the end clip, he honestly cares about Bob and gives wise advice, and even lets Bob see his Dad one last time. Is it really touchy to portray God, and to make him somewhat flawed? Very. Did I get that nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach that I would somehow be offended whenever God was on screen? Yes. However, this was actually a very tasteful and rather nice view point of God. Especially nowadays, where Atheists and other groups just LOVE to try and tear God down, this was refreshing.
Well, I realize opinions vary, but I'm fairly religious and still got a chuckle when you played the clip of the devil claiming to have made Purgatory up.
This was always a good show. My mom, step-dad, little brother, and I all watched it on Adult Swim. It wasn't anything ever that bad but it just really wasn't accepted. All I know is that I wish it made a comeback. It was a good show and had some funny moments.
I'm surprised this show wasn't baked up by the Christian faith. The morals GOD talks about could have made this a great ADULT RELIGIOUS cartoon. (Kinda like Passion Of The Christ)
I regularly attend church and all that, and honestly I want to watch this show now that I've heard of it. I think it's because while being a religious comedy, it doesn't go out of it's way to say "all religious people are stupid capitalist pigs" like some others like to do. If you're going to make fun of my religion, at least have the decency to be clever and creative about it.
Thank you Mr. enter for showing us not only the terrible animations but the great ones too. In your reviews by no only pointing out everything from the plot to the animation i have gained some sort of knowledge how to go about making an animation with good taste. Also, your reviews are very enjoyable to watch as your reasoning brings up some very good points. Keep up the amazing work.
I'm a Christian, but I'm always able to joke around, as long as I know that they aren't serious. It's just a joke. I don't understand why they would get offended for a few harmless jokes, especially when neither God nor the Devil was played wrong. I honestly want to go and watch this now, because it honestly seems like a very good show.
The animation is kinda lame. But maybe thats personal preference. Well, also the cliche daughter, but cartoons love cliche so can't really criticize that.
This seems like a really good show, and while the Father- Son confrontation scene does remind me a bit of a King of the Hill episode... the message at the end was really spot on. I teared up a bit to be honest
+Dropthefishtank exactly if humans were flawless before they ate the fruit when they were told not to then they had flaws before they ate the fruit. and if you member made in God's image of this proves that God is not flawless assuming that there is a God in the first place
+Deven Pautz we were given free will, we were made in his image but we are not clones. Eve was tempted by the serpent to eat from the tree and through her Adam was tempted as well. If you read from the Bible you see that he never intended for us to be exactly like him but rather our own beings, Children are a good example. Your child is supposed to obey you as you are their parent.
+IHASNOMZ lol yeah thats all assuming that there is a god in the first place. if god really exists why dose he let his "children" kill one another? hes more like a dead beat dad than a father lol.
As a Christian myself (Episcopalian) I actually like this show. I like stories that put a satirical spin on Mythology or Christianity while understanding the REAL message of Christianity, which is, (for people who think all Christians are a bunch of mean spirited militant douchebags like those assholes in Westboro) to be a good person and understanding of others and respectful of their beliefs. Also, as someone who also has a rocky relationship with his father, though it has gotten much better in recent years thanks to my understanding of my father and his past, this show speaks to me. Also, James Garner's voice is perfect for voicing God, at least the kind of God that I believe in. Kind, firm, and wise. So, again, as a Christian, this show should have been on longer as it presented a new spin. But, sadly, thanks to the Christian Equivalent of Internet Trolls, it was cut short. And that porch light joke... is hilarious.
9:20 this...this scene almost to actually makes me cry, mainly because my dad was the same way. hard on me but just looking out for me. he told me stories about his dad being even worse so it made me appreciate everything he does for me. sure, who doesn't atleast dislike they're father just because of some hard times in life, but...when you look back...he was just looking out for ya, keeping they're kids in check. ... i'll have to teach my kids that when i have some of my own.
People tend to look at me weird when I say that I like this show and South Park although I'm Christian. I (unlike a whole lot of Christians) know when a joke is a joke and I know that most religious jokes are all in good fun. With that said, I applaud this show for actually trying not to be offensive with its religious theme!
south park when "making fun of the religious" really is to me laughing at american society for being assholes about stuff it is shown especially in the episode where the "Mormons" move into town and everybody treats them like aliens but they turn out to be really pleasant people who wear "Magic Underwear"... I'm a member of the LDS church and I found the whole episode hilarious... The show can be raunchy at times but it is usually for the sake of really well done social commentary...
Keep in mind that South Park is the one show in the history of the world to satirize atheism. Also, Xavier: Renegade Angel is the one show in the history of the world to satirize Muslim extremists and not get censored or banned over it.
7:40 This joke I actually think is very clever. Not because "Haha, purgatory isn't real", but because Purgatory was ACTUALLY an invention by the christian church and was used to raise money during the time of Martin Luther (who split the church). It is very reasonable to think, that the Devil actually invented the idea of purgatory and influenced the Church of the time of the idea. It's a clever historical joke.
I'm a Christian and I actually really love this show. It gives a look on how God might've felt before the Flood. Needless to say, however, I see where some might be offended but it's not that offensive. I like the way they designed and made Gods character, and the Devil is exactly how he would be. The comedy is great, the characters are pretty good, and the over all story of it is actually really good and well done for the most part. That said, I bid you a du.
I don't see why people take religious jokes offensive... I'm a Christian too, but I honestly do sometimes giggle at stuff like this, because it is ACTUALLY funny, unlike most shows that I know of...
I second this. Theres a good selection of episodes that could be good candidates! Heck I'd even enjoy a South Park atrocity. I mean every show has its duds.
Though what would really be the purpose? Mr. Enter already did Samurai Quack to show how a proper parody is done. So is there really a point to do the same thing again?
I loved this episode because I can relate. While my father isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, I've heard stories about my grandpa during my dad's childhood, and it was tough, it was even tougher for my grandpa (who's still alive btw, and isn't a bad person just really tough and stuff). My dad has his moments of anger but it never gets too bad or happens too often, so yeah
I find it interesting that shows that are not meaning to offend people get cancelled just for that, yet shows like Family Guy who may or may not be deliberately trying to be offensive, end up getting an endless amount of seasons.
Wow, another awesome show! Thank you for putting up these kind of videos, I watched few of the episodes on RUclips just now and was amazed at how adult it was. It doesn't stray from often censored subjects in media, but approaches it in a way that is both meaningful, subtle, satisfying and clever in so many ways. I really enjoy your videos and these kind of admirable animations are just a treat! I never would have known about these kind of shows or gave a chance to it if you haven't recommended it. Thank you again! Now I'm off to watch the rest of the episodes
Its ironic that the show that wasn't trying to offend people is the one that gets cancelled after 4 episodes and the shows that try to offend people gets more than 2 seasons
That's because media logic says that if you're TRYING to be offensive, that automatically gives you liscence to BE as offensive as you want. Which _does_ work, to a certain extent, but shows like Family Guy have gone way, _way_ over that line.
Exactly, people, like me, like only certain shows, example of what I ACTUALLY like: The Amazing World of Gumball, The Simpsons (sometimes...), Ed Edd n' Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, etc. etc.... Yet they put actual GOOD shows behind, and bring up the shittier shows in front, such as Family Guy (As you mentioned), Adventure Time, Breadwinners, and the newer seasons of Spongebob Squarepants. (And yeah, I hate these, get over it, it's my opinion) They either bring the shows that are TRYING to be good down lower, or canceling one entirely, that's why shows like Family Guy and Adventure Time get in front of stupid merchandising and advertising, because they know it pisses us viewers off, especially me and Mr. Enter. I WOULD ignore shows like these, if they didn't try to shove it in our faces with fucking toys, clothes, pervert adult costumes, etc. EVERYWHERE.
You really hit the nail on the head with the controversy in the beginning, acknowledging the issues with the show's premise, but being completely fair with it.
People thought this show was offensive to religion this is actually the most tame show I have seen doing a comedy on religion, I bet the actual God in heaven chuckles at it from time to time. (I believe God has a a sense of humor as long as they don't really make fun of him) I mean here they make him look like a great guy you want to be around. If you want to see a offensive show about religion watch morel orel you can do animated atrocities on that if you want but how come you don't take requests anymore? And will you ever talk to me?
I love the fact that, for once, a TV show is saying "You're not wrong for being mad at this person who did something wrong", instead of vilifying him because "He had a reason for being a horrible person".
See, that's a thing that most forms of media don't seem to understand. Yes, Bob's dad was a terrible father to him, and yes, Bob has every right to be angry and resentful. But the truth of the matter is that Bob's father had mental and emotional issues, and because of the way he was raised and treated, he was simply ignorant. But what really pulls the message through is the fact that God mentioned that he was at least TRYING to do better. By not repeating the same cycle of violence and abuse that he went through, he was already trying, even if it wasn't enough. But that's better than nothing at all, which already pushes him farther ahead than most people. How many people say they will change and simply don't? How many people even TRY to change? It's not a justification, it's a reason of why it happened. They made his father human, actually relatable, and not some senseless bastard whose only goal was to make his son suffer. He wasn't a black and white villain.
I really like the guy who played God. I don't know what about his lines that made me like them so much, but just that calm, patient delivery that impressed upon us this underlying wisdom of the advice given made me really think, "...this could be what God sounds like."
i never heard of the show until you review it, and good lord i loved it, it is mature, respectful and incredibly well written. i wish it gets new seasons, maybe in the following years as thing progresses
you know if I ever get into the animation industry, i want to pitch my show to adult swim because i feel like they have more creative control (they will accept anything).
I'm not much into adult cartoons, but I have to say my favorite right now is Bob's Burgers, and I can't really explain why, but I just really like how almost all of the characters act like real people, in that they're not mean spirited, they just have a few quirks and go though problems that everyday people go though, with a bit of a weird twist to add in each of them.
I LOVE Bobs Burgers. Its my new favorite too. It reminds me a lot of Home Movies (which i also couldnt pinpoint why i was so hooked to) which is one of my favorite cartoons of all time.
effigytormented Yeah I know. It was the first thing that struck me when I saw a trailor for the show. It made me wonder if Brendon Small did any work on the show.
TheRich4270 Some teen don't want to see excessive gore on teen and adult aimed cartoons, horror like A Nightmare On Elm Street is what you can watch for big blood. Adults are not always wanting to see so many sexual puns and scenes EG the cliché of a dumb male thinking something looks like a penis or woman going nuts whenever they spot a naked man and react to his penis size, they make magazines and porn for people who want their big fix of nudity. Think I'll give this show a watch.
Pearl. I agree with you entirely that it really is sad that it’s gone because I honestly think that God the Devil and Bob was the best cartoon series that Christians and Atheists can relate to.
Just wanted to thank you for recommending this. I decided to watch the episode since it seemed interesting enough, and thankfully it was on youtube. I was somewhat entertained throughout the whole thing... but the ending message was one of the strongest I've seen in a long time and was also a message that I rarely hear. It's a wonderful message about forgiveness that I hadn't even considered until seeing that line. It really got my eyes watery just thinking about it. I feel like I became a whole lot more mature just from that one episode. And it never would've happened without you making this review. Hopefully I'll stumble upon future messages, and I think I'll give another episode of this a shot sometime. It's far from being one of my favorite shows, but with a message like that, I really don't mind.
Hasn't both The Simpsons and Family Guy depict God in a very negative light on numerous occasions? If so then how come this God, who was very compassionate and very kind, is offensive and removed from the air while Family Guy and The Simpsons are still up and running?
The show must have been taken off the air because of presumptuous people avoided it as they expected to be edgy religion-bashing tripe. (I'm one of those people) Also Family Guy and The Simpsons have seniority. If God, the Devil, and Bob came out in the same era, I'm sure it would have lasted longer.
The thing is, that Family Guy and The Simpsons don't have God as a major character. But "God, the Devil and Bob" has God in its NAME. Most of the people who protest these shows are people who don't watch them. They're not going through Family Guy and The Simpsons to find scenes that are offensive. "God, the Devil and Bob" is just a target because it has God in its name.
@TheDrunkenCoward Christian;Family Guy must be about a wholesome father and the Simpsons are an all american family.Nothing wrong here!God The Devil And Bob?LORD PROTECT OUR CHILDREN THIS IS CANCER AIDS. its all in the name...
I'm not sure when exactly they started airing episodes that depict god in that light (I know they have I just don't know what what point), but I would assume it's pressure from fans. Those shows are far larger in fanbase than God The Devil and Bob was. Hell Family Guy has been pulled multiple times and it always comes back.
Kudos for agnosticism, Mr. Enter! :D I was previously an agnostic myself before becoming a deist... before being agnostic, I was an atheist. That aside, I actually have to admit, this portrayal of God is downright heartwarming. Who the fuck cares if he's depicted as flawed? If anything, I think he's the perfect portrayal of God, right next to Morgan Freeman... and maybe the one in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. X3
CatMaster90001 Forget about your sin, give your audience a grin! Enjoy it, it's your last chance anyhow! So, always look on the bright side of death...
If you like this show, then I recommend another show. It is called Moral Orel. It lasted three seasons and ran on adult swim. It is a religious satire and it is comedy-based until it hits the second season's finale when it turns into a dark show. The third season is one of the best writing in a show that I have ever seen.
This show is...thought provoking. I love this God
He basically says "You're not wrong for being angry at your dad. You're not wrong for not wanting to forgive him either. But it's my job to forgive people. And everyone falls. No matter how hard people try to be good, they all fall. Do they all deserve to burn for eternity? No. That doesn't make them horrible people. It makes them human."
The best part is that he isn't trying to excuse the behavior of Bob's father.
+erttheking There were two main things that struck me from the message at the end of this episode:
"That's okay, Dad. I know you're just upset about Grandpa,"
I burst into tears at that line.
Luigi Epic "Look at you. You're already way smarter than me."
Luigi Epic Wow. He is a well written kid character, it's not common to see that in a cartoon.
I was on the edge there. I burst at, "Your father passed on a softer punch."
"Passing on a softer punch."
That's a very interesting idea.
Semper fi.
yeah and its interesting ive actually watched all the episodes there available on youtube
I didn't expect to see you here. That doesn't mean it's bad, it's just unexpected.
Perfection is overrated anyway
This is the best interpretation of God I have ever seen. He's so chill.
The Silver Skydancer He's actually an improvement over the God in the Bible.
+BLACKIESBOY Hahaha :D
+BLACKIESBOY I actually see the God of the Bible being sort of like this. In the Old Testament, you had to be the judge because there was no Messiah. in the NT, God solves the problem with a personal sacrifice. I personally view God in this very light.
+BLACKIESBOY Fuck allah.
The Ethannator ... We kinda still need a judge, if you ask me. It'd be very handy, what with human courts being... You know, human.
Finally this show gets the love it deserves. It's criminally underrated.
"A tasteful cartoon with personified God and Lucifer."
OFFENSIVE! GET IT OFF THE AIR!
"A raunchy cartoon invented just for the sake of offending people."
Great show! People who don't like it don't understand humor.
+GeneralSouthParkFan it wasn't adult swim that cancelled it initially. That was NBC, and they cancelled it after 4 episodes. Adult swim aired all 13
I can do without the sarcasm!
It is really sad honestly.
Funny shows that are at least decent and come from a good place gets canceled or end but shows that are mean spirited constantly say fuck you to the audience and offend others get to be on forever sure there are tons of exceptions but many them are because of popularity and are on for too long
Different times. This was cancelled by NBC in March 2000 and Mr Pickles came out in 2013, by then it was less common to shut down an offensive show
This version of the devil is actually more bible-accurate.
Actually, the original says he retained his looks.
"God said the Devil would be attractive."-Ned Flanders, Animated Atrocities #35
That quote from Ned about Lady Gaga was mildly amusing in an otherwise terrible episode. April 20, 2019, 11:25pm
@@jasminelav.332 the design of the horns and tail was specifically to humiliate him. His pride and vanity are what caused his fall.
One of the episodes, in which God forgets the Devil's birthday, actually has God describe Lucifer as "He was my best angel... my bright shining light...", and Satan, for his part, resented God's favoritism towards Humans, as he said "Knowing you were good, but never good *enough."*
I'm a Christian, and I've got to say that the religious jokes are pretty funny XD
God leaving His porchlight on one time and it being the light at the end of the tunnel.
Purgatory being made up by the devil.
They're all great, and I think that this series had so much going for it. Kinda sad that it stopped so quickly cause some people got ticked off.
While I may not get the religious and biblical references, I still find the jokes really funny.
@@michaelgum97 actually if you read the Bible you’d know there’s no mention of Purgatory in there. So it is indeed made up!
I get u, i went thriugh something similar
I don’t even know you but I respect you. You’ve got guts!
I don't see how this show got cancelled so quick. Anyone could've watched God's pep talk for the infants and said "Oh, this is harmless."
The show also had low ratings. So it probably would’ve been canceled anyway!
+otakuploader
Not all shows overstay their welcome or get canceled. Some actually have the discipline to, y'know, end themselves.
MrZee
Yeah.
Graphomite Amen brother.
"You don't know what it was like, growing up in his shadow, knowing I could be good, but never good enough"
"You think that's why you turned to evil?"
And of course, the characters were in general really well written, and the comedy stayed solid.
+Pyro Gear THANK YOU SO MUCH! As someone who's had trouble with his faith lately (I was born Catholic btw), you made me feel a ton better.
don't forget God tells that to Bob an episode or 2 before that as well when Bob is critical of God not interceding with the Devil dating Megan.
Exactly, we have free will after all 🙂
This show seemed to be thought provoking and ultimately have a soul, unlike a lot of other adult cartoons, it's a shame it didn't continue...
Aye, though I fear it could have devolved the longer it went on.
Aaaaaand as I was typing this, "pffft, liberals!" caught me too. I really need to watch this show, or what exists of it.
+AkridHunter the pope said that the purgatory was fake like a year ago lol
+NintenDECS I was just coming down here to comment that! I'm Christian and I found the joke about purgatory hilarious because I was raised that it was fake
Dvoa Fenin same
When thinking about the Bible, I do laugh about the how God is all knowing and yet asks questions like he didn't know, or ask people to do things just to tell them to stop at the last second. I understand how it can viewed as flawed, therefore funny to me.
I gotta find out who voiced God, I want him to read me my bedtime stories.
I want him to "Talk dirty to me.
The name of the guy who voiced god is James Garner. He actually died a few months ago.
Dandog002 aww...well I hope he rests in peace.
aaskalkaify Yeah...
Dang it...
"You're gonna be rich, you're gonna be famous... And YOU are gonna LOVE wearing your wife's clothes!!" 😂😂😂
I also love that you can't tell what the gender of the baby is at that line. Either it would be a man who likes to wear stereo typically feminine clothes or a woman who gets married to another woman. :)
+TheLunaOne Not a bad idea.
i think i was a pop reference
@@TheLunaOne "Hehe, don't wanna give away too much."
+LMaruchan
Most of my peronal problems with "the character of god as commonly portrayed by theists" stem from the fact that he's *supposed* to be perfect, flawless etc.
Incidentally, part of the Devil's hangup is very much rooted in theological history - namely, "What's so great about *humanity* when God had all of us around before they showed up!?"
He's basically the dutiful son in the "prodigal son" parable, rebelling because God bent over backwards for humanity time and again, but cast him and other Angels down to Hell when they basically rioted over it.
I really like this show. I'm religious, and it's not offensive in the slightest. It almost seems like it's mocking the contradictions and double standards of religion.
+NightGallows the only thing i find offensive is the existance of a physical representation of god
If Black Jesus can stay on for two seasons, then God, The Devil, and Bob can come back.
+Misterscrotumcrusher DID YOU SAY SAAAAAAALES?!!!!
+Helljump001 No
+Bill Suffocated yes
+Bill Suffocated Ignoring the fact that God's voice actor passed away, yes
I would like to see that :)
I like God's voice. Very soothing. An excellent voice.
TM
He was voiced by the late James Garner, so I'm not surprised.
An Excellent Observation.
I can no longer decide what I want to imagine God's voice as: This guy's or Morgan Freeman's.
TheWraithOfMooCow I find an excellent blend of James Garner with a slight Morgan Freeman undertone
Just cuz he is beyond bob's comprehension doesn't mean he is beyond all mortal comprehension.
MechaEmperor7000 I agree with you that the God shown in this cartoon series is the best depiction of God I’ve ever seen.
"What about purgatory?" -giggles- "We made that up" Im a catholic and i found that hilariouse
*Hilarious

Yeah, that was pretty good.

The best shows in life are cheap.
StarRider88
Well, many religious people are deprived of humour. They don't think twice about a joke, if it sounds like it might be insulting in one way or another, they go out of their way to get an apology or get a show cancelled.
P. Roud Tobi Mi Yeah.
P. Roud Tobi Mi well, I'm a christian, and I personally thought this portrayal, while not accurate, was not insulting at all. I thought it was good, and will probably watch more sometime.
Mason Clifton
Yeah, that's why I said many and not most or all. I know that there are great christians out there, who let other people think and believe what they like and actually can laugh about stuff like this or admire it.
It's just that the ones that are not like that make complaints and the ones who are like that can't do anything about it.
"That's okay dad. I know you're upset about grandpa."
Something about that scene really got to me and I just felt myself tear up. Even that "pass a softer punch" scene too.
I can't believe such a meaningful show got canceled. This one review of one episode made me feel more than entire franchises.
ive seen this happen so many times...
- someone says "religious people find this offensive" when in reality one a very insignificant minority of religious people find that something offensive
- people begin pointing fingers at religious people, insulting them and trying to mock their beliefs
- religious people now ARE offended by the people trying to insult them
look, try to act rational and take things with a grain of salt, dont pick fights if its only going to make things worse, respect other people's beliefs, be in god, a way of life, or nothing in particular, unless they are actively hurting someone, what is the problem with just letting someone believe what they want? and dont generalize
joseaca I haven't seen a single comment like that, but ooookay...?
Don't know why this is offensive
South Park depicts Jesus reading porn and directly calls all Christians retarded, and no one bats an eye.
This show depicts the devil directly tempting someone and God wishing babies good luck, and everyone loses their minds.
Because logic.
RamtroStudios In all seriousness, more popular shows have portrayed God (and other religions for that matter) much worse, and they are allowed to live into their teens in terms of seasons!
My guess is, christians found an easy target, and shot it down. South Park and Family Guy have a shit-load of fans. They're not going down that easy.
***** Now I am actually curious. If this is the least offensive depiction of God, Satan, and religion in general, what is the most offensive depiction?
What was the episode where JC reads porn?
I just realized: God in this show is voiced by Rourke from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, one of the most underrated animated movies ever.
+Curtis Stokman I thought he sounded familiar!
*That's* why that voice sounded so familiar. When I first saw this review, it took me a while to place where I heard it.
+Furious Sherman That's the late James Garner.
Touko White aka what god should have been/was being looked at originally.
Religion is an idea. And just like any other idea, it should not be shielded from mockery or criticism.
No I think mockerys on the table too, your right people will mock it and they shouldnt be punished for it.
thegamer9302 If by mockery, you mean satirism, then yes, by all means. But straight up making fun of people for what they believe isn't funny or cute. It's just mean-spirited at best.
PetrifiedEwenHeDs mean spiritied maybe, but i think mockery should be protected like any other speech.
Can I say hypocritical?
As I cristian, I have to say 2 things:
1: I laughted at the purgatory joke, mainly because if fact there is no trace of such a thing in the bible
2: You know... maby is not a biblical representation of why god forgives people, bit it is an accurate representation of the perspective that god would want us to have with that issue. Man, it doesn't to be biblical, bit represents god's way of thinking way better than many religious portraits
Yeah, it is better than the bible.
+Mims Zanadunstedt I wasn'r saying that...
Ceres Golden Cross - Indies y Clásicos Well the bible has math errors, so even a first grade mathbook is better than it.
Mims Zanadunstedt math errors...?
Ceres Golden Cross - Indies y Clásicos rejectionofpascalswager.net/math.html#sum
This show wasn't continued? I'd pay upfront to see this
Watched this episode of yours years ago.
This show handles Religious jokes waaaaaay better than Family Guy.
I love this show I wish it continued, I agree completely.
I'm Christian and I couldn't get offended no matter what they say. Hell (pun not intended) the porch light joke made me laugh really hard.
I respect that.
*****
Trust me, it's worth it. It's that good!
Nemesis Prime OMG DID HE VOICE MY MIGHTY OVERLORD ARCEUS?
Shame this was cancled, I really liked this; and im christian!
Are you one of those Christians who can take a joke as nothing more than a joke?
Good.
Me too.
Me too, I was insulted at first ,( Family guy is to blame for that ) but then I watched it and it was really good ^^
OverworldTNTPig
most christians are like that, it's just the ones who are not are louder and more vocal about it
OverworldTNTPig The sad part is the ones that take jokes too seriously are the ones we hear about.
Especially nowadays, where Atheists and other groups just LOVE to try and tear God down, this was refreshing.
aenjgeal
Agreed!
Well, I realize opinions vary, but I'm fairly religious and still got a chuckle when you played the clip of the devil claiming to have made Purgatory up.
Am I the only one who thinks that the devil kinda looks like Eminem?
Bison Ware LOL cannot unsee that now. Totally agree.
Bison Ware hehe....hahahah-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I enjoyed that comment :) in and out of context.
This was always a good show. My mom, step-dad, little brother, and I all watched it on Adult Swim. It wasn't anything ever that bad but it just really wasn't accepted. All I know is that I wish it made a comeback. It was a good show and had some funny moments.
I'm a Christian, and to me this show looks hilarious!
Agreed.
That purgatory isn't real joke was funny because it was true
I'm surprised this show wasn't baked up by the Christian faith. The morals GOD talks about could have made this a great ADULT RELIGIOUS cartoon. (Kinda like Passion Of The Christ)
One of the show creators WAS a pastor.
What a god tier show
I applaud you good sir
I used to watch this show on AdultSwim. It sucks they didn't continue it.
Tristan Hopkins I agree with you entirely that it really sucks that God the Devil and Bob didn’t get a season 2.
Woah.....this is good
+Jinhunter Slay Right!
You know Purgatory isn’t mentioned once in the actual Bible.
That joke was pretty solid.
I thought this was a animated atrocity but this was the best admirable animation i ever saw
ll_DaRk_ll F3arXmexlIIl this show is nothing like an atrocity
Opinion
The animation is kinda lame. But maybe thats personal preference. Well, also the cliche daughter, but cartoons love cliche so can't really criticize that.
Mims Zanadunstedt there's nothing wrong with that kind of daughter as long as itsdone right
Carl Bloke Fair enough. Guess anything in the right context can be made to look good.
I don't know why, but that purgatory joke got as much of a laugh out of me as the Devil and his lackeye did when Bob mentioned it.
This seems like a really good show, and while the Father- Son confrontation scene does remind me a bit of a King of the Hill episode... the message at the end was really spot on. I teared up a bit to be honest
i was the same way.
This is one of those shows that I've always tried to get around to watch it, but never do. Great review!
cant wait for april 9th review i hope he does it soon.
Good to see you're doing an admirable admiration for Arthur next! April 9th is one of the best episodes of the series IMO.
Thanks for putting this out here, Enter. This show needs a lot more coverage for what it attempted.
if humans are made in God's image, looking at humans God isn't perfect. of course that's assuming that there's a God in the first place.
The implication in the bible is that humans acquired flaws after Eve decided to be a total fucking airhead and eat from a tree. Oh wait shit.
+Dropthefishtank exactly if humans were flawless before they ate the fruit when they were told not to then they had flaws before they ate the fruit. and if you member made in God's image of this proves that God is not flawless assuming that there is a God in the first place
"Image" not exact replica
I'm a Christian and I find this show to be quite likable.
Glad I'm not the only Christian who didn't find this offensive.
I just watched it and it made me cry. jeez... very good writing, i'll give it that
9:20 this...this scene almost to actually makes me cry, mainly because my dad was the same way. hard on me but just looking out for me. he told me stories about his dad being even worse so it made me appreciate everything he does for me. sure, who doesn't atleast dislike they're father just because of some hard times in life, but...when you look back...he was just looking out for ya, keeping they're kids in check. ... i'll have to teach my kids that when i have some of my own.
People tend to look at me weird when I say that I like this show and South Park although I'm Christian. I (unlike a whole lot of Christians) know when a joke is a joke and I know that most religious jokes are all in good fun.
With that said, I applaud this show for actually trying not to be offensive with its religious theme!
Me too
I feel like the only christian who doesn't instantly get offended at anything not exactly to my standards
south park when "making fun of the religious" really is to me laughing at american society for being assholes about stuff it is shown especially in the episode where the "Mormons" move into town and everybody treats them like aliens but they turn out to be really pleasant people who wear "Magic Underwear"...
The porch light and the purgatory joke actually made me laugh.
I loved watching this show when I saw it. I wish AdultSwim still showed aired this.
7:40
This joke I actually think is very clever.
Ya
The Catholics are the worst periods of christians because they took the kindness out of beliefs and replaced it with
Do good deeds or die
I think it's REALLY funny when the *devil* says "*we* made that up" implying that the catholic church was corrupted at the time... lol
Wich it was
That works on so many levels!
“The ‘Light’ has been blown way out of proportion. That’s just my porch light.”
That’s not even offensive. That’s just clever.
Holy cow i wasn't even thinking of the flood!!???!
You should really review a South Park episode. An example would be Make Love, Not Warcraft for Admirable Animation.
there are plenty of admirable south park episodes
John Carver Like the Critters Christmas Episode
I second this. Theres a good selection of episodes that could be good candidates! Heck I'd even enjoy a South Park atrocity. I mean every show has its duds.
Or "You Have 0 Friends"
Though what would really be the purpose? Mr. Enter already did Samurai Quack to show how a proper parody is done. So is there really a point to do the same thing again?
I loved this episode because I can relate. While my father isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination, I've heard stories about my grandpa during my dad's childhood, and it was tough, it was even tougher for my grandpa (who's still alive btw, and isn't a bad person just really tough and stuff). My dad has his moments of anger but it never gets too bad or happens too often, so yeah
:')
I find it interesting that shows that are not meaning to offend people get cancelled just for that, yet shows like Family Guy who may or may not be deliberately trying to be offensive, end up getting an endless amount of seasons.
You can really tell how unrealistic this show is by how much space they put between the rows on the airplanes
Wow, another awesome show! Thank you for putting up these kind of videos,
I watched few of the episodes on RUclips just now and was amazed at how adult it was.
Thats what I want to know
That's because media logic says that if you're TRYING to be offensive, that automatically gives you liscence to BE as offensive as you want.
EVERYWHERE.
just like how clone high got cancelled after a season because of ghandi
Julie Walker But shows like Brickle Berry and Mr. Pickles goes way to far to offend people and for no reason
the whole thing about his father dying really reminds me of when Hank's father dies
I'm just really disappointed that this show got taken off the air, because honestly? Most of the episodes hit home like this one.
You really hit the nail on the head with the controversy in the beginning, acknowledging the issues with the show's premise, but being completely fair with it.
Great video. Felt like rewatching it probably due to Father’s Day.
So this guy became your god headcanon voice?
xD I guess, yeah
Wow.... I wish that this would continue. This show is absolutely amazing! I could definitely get into this.
i never heard of the show until you review it, and good lord i loved it, it is mature, respectful and incredibly well written.
i wish it gets new seasons, maybe in the following years as thing progresses
Thank you Adult Swim.
***** if it werent for that channel, i would have not known that clerks had an animated series, and i wouldn't have known Pee-Wee Herman
you know if I ever get into the animation industry, i want to pitch my show to adult swim because i feel like they have more creative control (they will accept anything).
The ONLY problem about Adult Swim, is that it does not come on until 8:00 PM, after one of the most crappiest channels ever, Cartoon Network, DAMNIT!
Zachary Jorgensen i thought nick was the crappiest channel ever. and plus why do you have gumball as a profile icon?
thanks Obama.
I predict some religion controversy in the comments of this video. This is why I'm disabling replies btw.
"Boss is what I does" - Gandhi

Sam, That Loser You Can't Hate I think you have the wrong guy
Actually did a marathon of the whole series thanks to this video. Well done.
Huh, thanks John, it looks like I have a new show to check out and those few clips alone really hit hard - Cheers.
Pooky1991 Coach McGirk and Bob are the same guy you know.
effigytormented Yeah I know. It was the first thing that struck me when I saw a trailor for the show. It made me wonder if Brendon Small did any work on the show.
Naw, probably not, the voice actor is pretty prevalent.
Pooky1991 Home Movies was insanely underrated. I miss it so much.
Doesn't look like a bad show. There are some really touching moments. :)
***** It sure can. Not all adults (or teenagers) like having disgusting, gross or sexual content thrown at their faces.
***** Ren and Stimpy's... weird. It's an OK show, not my favorite. I do know one thing: it's a MASTERPIECE compared to its disgusting adult spinoff!
***** What were they thinking?!
It's sad this show was canceled. they could have done a lot with the setup they had.
Pearl. Fucking crazy religious people
Man, now I want to watch the whole series of this!
(I'm one of those people)
Also Family Guy and The Simpsons have seniority.
@TheDrunkenCoward
Christian;Family Guy must be about a wholesome father and the Simpsons are an all american family.Nothing wrong here!God The Devil And Bob?LORD PROTECT OUR CHILDREN THIS IS CANCER AIDS.
its all in the name...
Probably because god isn't a recurring main character in those
I'm not sure when exactly they started airing episodes that depict god in that light (I know they have I just don't know what what point), but I would assume it's pressure from fans.
Always look on the bright side of life... *random whistling*
Peasham Life is quite absurd, and death's the final word, you must always face the curtain with a bow!
CatMaster90001 Forget about your sin, give your audience a grin! Enjoy it, it's your last chance anyhow!
So, always look on the bright side of death...
Peasham Just before you draw your terminal breath!
CatMaster90001 Life's a piece of shit...
When ya look at it...
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true!
James garner, the voice of god here died D: RIP guy that i want to talk "dirty to me"
Lovro Kralj Yeah, he definitely had one of those voices that's like...getting into a bath of warm water. If that makes any sense.
ElectricMayhem87 He sounds kinda like Morgan Freeman in a hushed voice. It's really soothing...
I'm so excited to hear that you're doing April 9th for your next Admirable Animation. That's one of my favorite episodes of Arthur.
If you like this show, then I recommend another show. It is called Moral Orel. It lasted three seasons and ran on adult swim. It is a religious satire and it is comedy-based until it hits the second season's finale when it turns into a dark show. The third season is one of the best writing in a show that I have ever seen.
