Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

But what *is* it??!!
Gestural drawing is art lingo. I still have no idea what this means. SHOW ME! What is the difference between a gesture drawing and a sketch or a drawing of a figure. I keep running into the art equivalent of someone telling me a fork being something you use to eat food without showing me the difference between a fork and a spoon and then expecting me to get it right. As a student, you're learning a new language. After all the people I've asked and all the different resources I've used to look this term up, I STILL have no idea what you're talking about. This is the ONLY term I still haven't figure out what it means and I KNOW it's something I'm supposed to learn. PLEASE show and explain what makes a gestural drawing a gestural drawing and not another kind of drawing. Answering the question by saying a gesture drawing is a drawing of a gesture doesn't help. Define what the different types of drawings are, PLEASE......pretty please........on my knees begging pathetically with big, sad puppy eyes.......

It really is a loose sketch done quickly, basically. The only difference is that in a gestural drawing you're specifically going for a sketch as the final product. Think of it like you're trying to capture someone quickly before the mood changes. It's like clouds-- blink and you miss it, so you're loosely gesturing/sketching what it was like, including lighting and shading.
A sketch is preliminary before something else is added, so usually you'll just make notes of what you want loosely and add or fix it later (i.e. the final drawing or painting or what have you). A gestural drawing is a final product done usually in several minutes, thus making it appear more sketch-like.
I would say you're drawing the flow of the movement as opposed to the arm or body, so a quick figure would work as long as it's the movement you see when you look at it.
