I wouldn't say it's underrated. It won a GLAAD award which is is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry and it was HBO's most/second most streamed series. I DO however agree that it takes some people a bit to...warm to it
As you watch, please keep in mind - this was advertised as a Taika Waititi pirate comedy. That was it. That was all we knew. THAT WAS THE SELL. As the episodes go on, I'm sure more people will tell you about their experience watching this show for the first time, because I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH: THAT WAS HOW THE SHOW WAS MARKETED.
Fyi the show is (loosely) based on real people. There WAS a pirare bamed Stead Bonnet, he was a wealthy land owner in Jamaica who one day up and left his family to sail the open seas as a rather inadequate pirate on a ship named Revenge. He paid his crew a salary and brought a library of books with him. He ran into Black Beard and became co-captians. He was to be seen wandering around their ship in a silk dressing robe. He was The Gentleman Pirate.
OFMD takes some liberty with the few facts known about Stede Bonnet but it's also weirdly accurate. Stede was hopelessly unprepared to take up piracy, he bought himself a ship, complete with library, and set sail on the Revenge with his crew of salaried pirates. If he ever killed a childhood bully with a whale paperweight we might never know but it's as a good a guess of what he got up to as anyone else's.
No exaggeration I've never been as excited for a reaction series as I am for this one! I love your videos and I love this show, and I hope you'll enjoy it. Can't wait for more!!
Episode 2 is great, but the show truly takes off in Episodes 3 and 4. More characters are introduced and the good stuff gets going. This one my favorite comedy show of all time, and I hope you stick with it and love it!
This was such a fun reaction! "he tripped and fell into piracy," the way you noticed the Pinocchio connection, you're going to have a lot of fun with this I think
*starts playing the clown circus music as i remember every ask you received about this show* you just walked right into this one but jokes aside I'm thrilled you like it so far, episode 1 is so so good probably one of the best starts to a series
No clowning from me - I'm just incredibly happy you're reacting to this series and enjoying it! This is my favorite show and Gaywatch is my favorite reaction channel, so I'm over the moon right now.
It would have been so understandable if this didn’t work for you just because it didn’t mesh with your brand of humor, so I’m delightfully surprised and pleased that you did in fact end of enjoying it. I remember the 2 things that got me hooked on this show. I have obvious roots of love for quëër pirate stories with one story a dominant leader, and hearing of one in a fun drastically different genre quickly got my curiosity once people started talking about it. And then it started with a direct yet apparently UNINTENTIONAL reference to my dear Black Sails with the text opening and that got my attention. What REALLY got me though was Stede’s final flashback at the end of this episode. The first flashbacks to his wife and family give a miserable and distant feeling, but then that last one shows him closer with them, laughing warmly and having fun. Even if his previous life wasn’t ideal there was still attachments there despite first impressions, and this is paired deliciously with the present knowledge that he still left them. So I HAD to know the story there, and now I’m eagerly awaiting season 2. Can’t wait to see what else you think!
i don't blame you for being reluctant to watch this show. the marketing was...interesting. a lot of folks i've seen react to it expected rapid-fire jokes the whole way through, for instance. but the show is weirdly....wholesome? glad to see it hooked you pretty quick.
I would've sworn...that you already reacted to this. But I think it was my subconscious literally assuming that you did, cause OF COURSE YOU DID. But no. Omg I'm so glad I can watch your reaction to this masterpiece.
Honestly, I refused to watch OFMD for a similar reason. I generally don't like this style of humor and that's all that was advertised in the trailers. I do not like sitcoms centered on a group of jackasses. BUT... that's because the basic premise of those shows usually don't allow for character growth or plot depth. I did not trust in David Jenkins's plan and I was wrong. I was ready to tell you to wait until episode 4 before you judge the show, but enjoy!
I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOU GO ON THIS JOURNEY!!!!! genuinely some of my favourite comedy, romance and queer rep ever, in a lovely pirate package. and just in time to join in on the s2 hype
GOmens led me to OFMD, which, in turn, led me to One Piece. they are a perfect combo for many reasons which I hope you discover by continuing with this series. I definitely look forward to seeing your reactions to the latter two (after thoroughly enjoying your GOmens ones). Maybe bring the wife if she's interested in queer pirates?
@@jessicaross7288 oh, we're used to not spoiling each other... instead I've just been giving her smug smiles bc I know how much she's going to love it. She already does, but oh man. It's gonna be so fun to watch her really fall for Stede and Ed. 😄
OH HELL YES !!!! somehow i just sort of assumed you'd already seen this show, i'm So Excited to go through it again w you !!! once it gets going it REALLY gets going, i love it so much
this was such a fun reaction to watch! i'm glad you took a chance on this despite your misgivings, this series is something very unique. you are picking up so much of what this series is putting down even in the first episode and that makes me so excited to see your reaction to the rest. if you liked the shot of stede reading to the crew, you are in for a visual treat, both in the blue and amber bullshit department and in general staging and set design.
I'm grinning so hard. Your reaction was very similar to mine when I caved in and watched this. Finding out you're incorrect can occasionally lead to good things, but it still feels a bit rubbish. Thanks for taking the chance, it's made my day better! I also avoided this for a while. I'm from NZ, (so if you'd like to point and laugh, feel free to imagine this in Rhys' accent :p) and for me at least, it just feels...ODD to see Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby in mainstream media, after being vaguely aware of them in Kiwi shows for a few decades? Because like, no, they're local chucklefucks, what are they doing? Someone go fetch them before they hurt themselves. It's like a distant cousin you haven't seen in a few years suddenly showed up running for a major political office, it's hard to take them seriously. Also, usually I find both of their styles of humor a little ...uncomfortable? to watch, because they can be VERY "Kiwi", and look, I was born here, and our humor annoys ME sometimes, so I always feel a kind of secondhand embarassment when I watch overseas folks watching it, waiting for the inevitable moment someone goes "...o-kay then." It can be a very specific type of comedy, and it doesn't always hit right, I've avoided a lot of their stuff. And yet. here I am, hunting out reactions to the damn thing because season 2 can't get here soon enough :D [/waffling] all this to say I enjoyed the video, and I look forward to your reactions!
Literally came here to say this, aussie here, and I was hesitant af when I heard Rhys Darby was the lead for this show. Over here he’s more well known for his stand up than anything else but i was never particularly fond of that kind of improvisational style of comedy but a friend from NZ was adamant that this show was like being wrapped in a warm blanket and style of humour was more akin to the office than it was the usual Aussie/kiwi type humour. Tho you see a lot of it in there! Especially with the Aussie and kiwi actors! I was actually pleasantly surprised at Rhys Darby and [name omitted in case of spoilers] performances, it was definitely something different that either of these actors have done.
"just realized the Pinocchio connection." I have, no lie, seen this episode at least 6 times but literally just had that epiphany at the exact same time as you said it. Wow...
As a kid, stede had described his life as "fortunate", so he was already acknowledging his privilege, what the dad said was unnecessary and uncalled for.
Ahh that explains why I looked for your What we Do in The Shadows reaction and didn't find it! But I hope you like OFMD cause it's so good, I'm so excited for season 2 in October!
No no clowning 😂but I can assure you, you’re in for a ride, and also Good Omens brought me also to OFMD and I’m glad 😅 it’s hilarious and romantic you’ll love it
AAAHHHHHHH!!!! OMG OMG OMG I’ve been on a bit of a social media break/hiatus, and I’m catching up on all my favorite channels. I’m so happy you’re reacting to this!! I remember back when it first aired and you said you didn’t think you’d react to it, since it probably wasn’t your cup of tea. I was a bit disappointed, but respected it since you know your own tastes better and we do. I didn’t expect you to ever react to it! I can’t wait to dive in! This show is so good, and so lovable, even if you don’t expect to like it and I’m so happy you’re giving it a chance!
Ok but your refusal to watch the show before is so relatable to me lol, I was the same. When it came out it felt like it was all I saw people talking about and I actively refused to watch it partially out of spite. I don’t mind a lot of Taika Waititi’s work but some of it is very hit or miss for me so I wasn’t in any rush to see it. But when season 2 was airing I decided to check it out and now I’m obsessed with these gay pirates. Stede Bonnet really (and the rest of the crew, but mostly Stede) stole my heart from the get go. I’m glad to see you’re enjoying the show as well!
I was literally in the same boat as you, avoiding it because I didn't think it was my style. Just watched last week, glad to see we're going on this journey together lol
Just discovered your channel, watched the latest reaction first, then came here afterwards. It's fun to see how you big a fan you are now, compared to how hesitant you were to watch Taika Waititi stuff. If you haven't watched "Boy" yet I fully recommend it. My next couple of hours will be spent watching the rest of your playlist!
FINALLY WATCHING OFMD!!!! well, Taika directed one episode and him and Rhys did have a fair bit of improv going on because they've been bffs for forever but don't let that deter you ;) I have to say I wasn't COMPLETELY sold straight away (many people aren't/weren't) but it groes on you super quick, especially the people (big found family vibes!) and yes, PLEASE talk about why you think there's an overlapping between the GO and OFMD fandom when you're a bit further into the show :D I'm very, VERY happy you're doing the show and can't wait to see you become more obsessed as you go on
As one of the people who recommended this on your GOs2 reactions I am ecstatic to see you react to it, it's probably been my favourite show since I saw it as it was coming out, the only competition it has in my mind is good omens, especially after s2. Anyway, some fun facts about this episode: Young Stede is played by Theo Darby and his dad Rhys plays Stede David Jenkins, the creator of the show actually has a cameo in this episode as the British officer who gets tea spilled in his lap and gets tied to the boat towards the end 😅
I'm ready to watch you watch E2! When ya doin it? You've got to hurry and watch all 10 E's so you can view the S2 teaser/trailers!! AND prep for S2 on Oct 5!! FYI...you probably already know this but: the boy that plays Stede as a child is Rhys Darby's youngest son; and the English Navy guy, gagged & tied to the rowboat w/the headless bodies is show creator, David Jenkins!
Why oh why has this never been reced to me before today....I'm so falling in love with everything. Oh, except that one panel in Heartstopper. GAAAAAH should've trusted Nick Nelson's taste.
The refusal to watch OFMD is the moment that keeps you humble.
OFMD is totatlly underrated. Even people who think they don't like it at the start seem to come around by eps 4.
I wouldn't say it's underrated. It won a GLAAD award which is is one of the most prestigious awards in the industry and it was HBO's most/second most streamed series. I DO however agree that it takes some people a bit to...warm to it
"He trip and fell into actual piracy!" So accurate
As you watch, please keep in mind - this was advertised as a Taika Waititi pirate comedy. That was it. That was all we knew. THAT WAS THE SELL.
