    Great video. I am new at polymer clay, but I wouldn't think blowing on the resin to remove bubbles would be a good idea. My thinking is that you would run the risk of injecting moisture into the resin. Someone told me to use heat to remove bubbles, a match or a lighter provides enough heat for the bubbles to burst without harming the clay. I will try making some cherry blossom canes and see how it goes. Thank you.

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  5 лет назад

      Thanks Julie, yes using heat does work too, but I didn't have that option at the time, and gently blowing does work if you don't have access to a lighter etc. :)

      I am glad you enjoyed it, but oh, how frustrating :( yes, sadly it's normally a case of time and constantly doing it. Is it also a case of you being your own worst critic though? We all have a tendency to do that, you are probably doing a lot better than you give yourself credit for. :)

  • @juliejohnston9753
    @juliejohnston9753 5 лет назад +1

    Well, I have made 2 of these, and I am not totally happy with either of them. Guess I will consider them practice pieces. Until I made these canes, I had only made 2 other canes. Definitely there is a learning curve here. So, I will soldier on, and try to improve. Thank you so VERY much for an excellent tutorial. I think part of why I am not satisfied, it the project is too large. I am not sure how to scale it down.

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  5 лет назад

      Hi Julie, well if you have only made a couple of canes before I think you are probably being very hard on yourself. I am sure if you showed your pieces to others they would be amazed at what you have created. As to the sizing, yes, if it is too big for you, then you will never be happy with it. You can of course simply reduce the petal canes to really small pieces, when I first started I made relatively small beads and covered them with tiny petals and leaves, so you really can go as small as your fingers will allow. Try scaling everything down and make a smaller piece, you don't have to make it big and chunky, try adding the leaves and petals to a smaller focal bead sized piece of blue clay, and see how that looks. Best wishes, Fiona

    • @juliejohnston9753
      @juliejohnston9753 5 лет назад +1

      @@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals THank you for the encouragement, Fiona. I am just stubborn enough to keep at this until I am satisfied with it. I think your suggestion of making a focal size piece of clay that I like, then scale down the flowers and leaves to fit that. Will let you know if that turns out well. Thanks for everything. Your work is so very lovely.

    Obviously the brooch itself is stunning, but I wanted to mention the brooch pin. I've never seen anyone cut a hole first so it lies flush. It's such a neat and professional technique! It's the little derails like that, which separates the good from the amazing!

    Fiona, this is one of the best tutorials you've done, and that's really saying something! Easy enough for even beginner caners to do, with an extraordinarily beautiful result. Quick question - how do you slice strips of clay on your laminated grid without cutting/scratching the surface of the plastic laminate sheet? Thanks so much!

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  4 года назад +1

      Thanks so much Margaret. Most of the time the blade doesn't really cut into the laminate at all, so I can reuse them again and again. Sometimes, though I do nick, or cut into one a bit, and once that happens they start to get worse, so I normally replace them, or just use the plain backside to store sheets of clay on. They hold up better than you would think though. I have a whole pile of them that I use all the time, and I also laminate a whole bunch at a time when the old ones start getting tatty :)
