I just got a 3500 SRW Crew cab short bed Tradesman with Aisin transmission. No air bags. Coming from a 1500 Ecodiesel the ride is pretty stiff. Now I do pull a 10k trailer pretty regularly (weekly) BUT I need to carry water in the bed of the truck so I need some payload capacity AND it's for work so it needs to be legal. So messing around with the ride and reading stuff. The dealership gave it to me with 81psi in all the tires (firestone). I lowered to 60 front and 55 rear when hot (55front and 50rear - cold). It helped. I disconnected the front sway bar and that made a HELL of a big difference. The front now feels WAAAAAAAAY "softer" than the rear. Lets say not nearly as harsh. I notice no roll. I'll reconnect it to tow. I just added Sulastic shackles to the rear and that made a pretty big difference too. It's still stiff, but it took the punch out of the rear. So I might tow that trailer 5 hours to a job then work there the week and tow it home. Have a week or two off and do that again. So it's my long distance hauler and then my daily commuter.
To recap: With proper tire air pressure. The disconnected sway bar front end feel much softer than the stock rear. With disconnected sway bar and sulastic shackles they feel about even maybe a little rougher in the rear.
Very early on I ordered Thuren coils, fox shocks, and Thuren sway bar. I don't have any of it yet. I think maybe the first step if your ride is really rough to you would be Thuren REAR springs and the Thuren sway bar. I guess the shocks would be a good upgrade. If you tow a lot AND you need payload you might not like the Thuren leaf springs. There's a load/deflection chart on their web page. Make sure you understand that before you get those springs. Towing and loaded my rear suspension is fine by me. Towing 10k with as much water to get me maybe an inch lower in the rear than the front the truck is great. I pulled this set-up with the ED and no water. It's a totally different experience towing this with the 3500 and I show up ready to go.
With the Sulastic in the rear, the disconnected factory sway bar, and sensible pressure in the tires I'm very much OK with the ride. Very pleased with it now the way it is.
You can have the sway bar end links off/on in 10 minutes if the threads are still ok.
Oh snap almost forgot. It might just be me BUT the truck seems to stop from about 20 to zero MUCH better. In AUTO exhaust brake it kinda kicks out at about 20 MPH and the truck feels like it squirts out from under you. You'll notice that when the brake kicks off you need to really get into the pedal. That's gone now. When the EB kicks out whatever pressure you have on the pedal is fine for slowing you down to zero nice and linear like.

According to TFLT Ram is considering dropping the Aisin trans for a ZF or Allison for the future HD’s . Curious if you heard ?

Do you think the drivers airbag has more air to compensate for the fuel tank being on the left side. With a fuel density of 6.7 to 7.0 lbs per gal that would be between 221 and 231lbs.I would not be surprised that ram also makes adjustments by fuel Qty.Just a thought.

I had a lifted 1500 before my current 3500, the 1500 was rock solid and smooth as fresh powder. To my knowledge, factory does not offer airbags with coil springs, but I’m not thoroughly familiar with 2500s and the many different configurations.

Had the same issue in my 2019, driver side airbag was super stiff and the passenger airbag was super soft. Adjusted the ride height sensor brackets and balanced them out. Driver side was sitting about 1/2” higher than the passenger before adjusting it.

Paul, I don’t think I understand, I have an 18 3500 with air ride in the rear and I also, think the rear is a bit stiff.
I would like a smoother ride for when unloaded. Maybe you could do a video pointing to exactly what you were talking about. Thanks.

He adjusted the sensor to make the computer think the truck is too high and thus causing the computer to let air out of the bags resulting in less resistance to axle movement and a smoother ride.

Dean Wissmann not sure you would want to make this change as it defeats the function of the the air bags while loaded. The ride is stiff but that’s a one ton truck for you. The only option I have found to significantly change the ride quality without compromising the performance during heavy lifting is removing the leaf spring completely and going with a five link Kelderman suspension.

Your rear dropping “6-8”” when dumping the air (transport mode in settings) is not sounding right. My 16’ drops maybe a half inch when not loaded when I put the suspension into Transport Mode. I have also dumped the air prior to unhooking a fifth wheel so that the bags are completely empty (squishy to the touch) when the trailer is unhooked, measured height then take the suspension out of Transport Mode to see the amount of rise when the bags inflate. The measurement is negligible. The bags automatically adjust at speeds in excess of 5 mph.

Hey Paul, I’ve got a 2018 ram 3500 longhorn with the factory air bags same as your set up. Same issues. Absolutely horribly rough. Tried to adjust my potentiometer with no success. Did you have to notch your holes larger? A how to video would be awesome. I’m to my Whitt’s end with how rough this truck is. Any help would be much appreciated

Mike Hunt pretty much all his trucks are one ton singles. He has an explanation in some of his older videos. But basically the singles have enough capacity for what he does, less/easier tire maintenance and better fuel mileage.
