It's easy to pick up because their school is taught completely in English and many of their teachers are either from the US, Canada, or other English speaking countries

I guess Giselle's parents communicate in English in their house since it must be their second language. The way Giselle speaks Japanese, she doesn't sound fluent (unlike non native but not fluent), so even in her house, she speaks English beside international school.
