Fridays at 2pm on BBC 5 live.
I adored it. I actually got teary eyes at the end. As a 22 year old, Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine for most of my life so it was quite an emotional conclusion to a long saga, because of that seeing Wolverine so old, so tired and beaten down was slightly harrowing for a character we know and love.
I thought the acting on everyone's part was phenomenal, the girl who played X-23 was brilliant and if she doesn't get her own standalone film it'll be such a wasted opportunity. All in all, a perfect and well deserved end for a much-loved character, all ends were nicely tied up while creating potential for a new series of X-23 (new x-men?) films.
I feel ya. I too feel Hugh Jackman's Wolverine was my first superhero. I didn't get teary. I BAWLED as the credits went up. It was like a part of me had died. (Throughout the whole film I was like 'Don't hit him, you bastards!' hahaha)
And the last film that made me cry as much as that was Les Mis....Jackman effect, I guess. He's so damn good at conveying guilt and remorse and goodness that shines through the darkness.
He has become one of my role models, because whenever I see that man and his countenance, I wish I can grow old like that- humaneness seeping from every wrinkle.
I think this is the kind of film that Zack Snyder thought he was making when he made Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman
and Watchmen.
Dan Nolan SHUT UP! Watchmen is a masterpiece!
Mega MovieZ You really think so?
In the same way that Michael Bay thinks he's making a Coen brothers film with explosions every time he gets behind a camera.
hahaha so true
Best X-men film by far.
Have faith, it's terrific.
not saying much. Only X2 is good.
First Class is also pretty good (despite how cheap and badly shot it looks in places). But yeah, none of the X-Men films have been brilliant films exactly. Even X-2 I don't think holds up as the classic many claimed it would be.
Gjakova Shqipni I still like Days of Future Past.
Days of Future Past. wasn't bad. But it was over-plotted and the final twist with Magneto betraying everyone was groan worthy.
Absolutely loved it and I don't even like superhero films much. It is gritty and emotional and Jackman and Stewart, wouldn't be surprised if they got awards buzz. First time I ever really cried at a superhero film especially that ending
Niall Hassett cool
Thanks haha, when I made this, I had just seen it so I was trying to get my words down really fast
I was too energetic at the time but I agree she was absolutely brilliant. Hope we get a film with her
Because this is actually a superhero film that's done right. Yes it's a superhero film. Superhero films don't always have to have explosions.
I was shocked by Logan. It was gritty, down to earth, brtual, emotional, and even funny in the right places. The violence was done so well, and it has raised the bar for all superhero films, even though it doesn't really feel like one. Nice to see a superhero not in a plot that involves saving the world. 9.5/10
You know its a good movie when Simon starts listening to Kermode
Logan is a masterpiece.
Thank you Hugh Jackman, for everything.
An instant classic. Two years later and this is still one that sticks in the mind. I'm hoping this grows in stature in the coming years as one of the best films ever made - alongside all the greats.
Beautiful storytelling with a beating weathered heart.
“Living with a legacy of violence”.. such an interesting point. When you strip away the glitz and quips and colourful costumes; what our heroes are doing is engaging in extreme violence. This movie found an amazing way to show that while still having it be apart of the larger comic universe
Yes, westerns went that way in the 90s and 2000s.
Our popular films today are quite violent but it's violence with little meaning and no real consequences, I'm thinking of the new Star Wars and Marvel movies, half the time they are fighting ugly looking monsters or guys in helmets with no faces so its therefore fine.....
I loved Senna and Amy, but this documentary about Irelands greatest Eurovision entrant had me very confused,
Surprised he didn't mention how good the young actress was. She was by far one of the best child actors I have seen in a long time. And really held her own with Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart (who also turned in top performances).
Mark Kermode reviews Logan. Ageing and with his powers fading, Kermode's life is given new purpose when a new Sex and The City film is released
Its not just the best Wolverine movie. Its not just the best X-men movie.
I'd say its one of the best superhero movies ever made. I can only compare it to Spider-Man 2 and the Dark Knight. Hell, I can't even see it as being in canon with the previous movies - it really feels like it is its own film
It's not only the best superhero movie, but it's one of the best films of the year!
Connor Morley It is THE best film of the year!
It's not one of the best superhero films of the year, but the best superhero film of the past two decades.
I wouldn't call it a Superhero movie... It's an Action Drama with Characters that have superpowers in it
This is not only the best comic book movie I've ever seen (even beating The Dark Knight) but one of my favorite films ever.
the last fight sequence is the only flaw with the film imo. felt very rushed and seemed like something the studio would've forced on the director for more successful marketing. the ONLY part that kills the momentum if the film for me. then you get to ending tho and its just tears for days. good tears
Watched it yesterday, loved it. A very emotional and well earned ending to Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine. They got it right.
Yes! I'm so glad Mark liked this. I'm so tired of critics treating comic book movies as being lesser to other films and this is a great example of a comic book movie that doesn't feel like a comic book movie, it's so much more than that. Just like all the best comic book movies it transcends the medium, it's not really a superhero movie, it's a great dystopian neo-noir western about someone trying to keep an old guy alive whilst taking a girl across the border. It's essentially a film about family, relationships, growing old and dying and just happens to feature characters who have super powers.
rivolinho then this movie is for you
David O'Sullivan your first few statements are so false it hurts. RT proves it.
You're tired of critics treating comic book movies as lesser but then you contradict yourself by going on about how Logan transcends the genre. Strange.
Exactly, because I don't think of comic book movies as a genre unlike everyone else, a film like Logan proves this by showing that a Wolverine movie can be a Western - not all comic book movies are the same, comic book movies can be any genre the source material requires them to be, that's my point.
Lesser? Haven´t you seen some exaggerated positive average scores in many sites (critics reviews supposedly) for average blockbusters which happen to be cbm like Avengers and the likes? They have got way too much shine if anything. If what you are refering to is that the moest serious or important circuits (like awards season for example) refuse to give them credit for their screenplay or acting pieces then yes, you are right. They treat tem as lessers, which is what they are. Apart from the Nolan films and a few more great things here and there, it is just average entertainment. I like many of them, but come on, they are not better than other generic blockbusters from other genres.
It made me think of The Outlaw Josey Wales in so many ways.
Looks like I'm going to see Logan this weekend then.
That's such a great and powerful review. Convinced me to go and see a film I'd otherwise miss
So in other words its the opposite of X-Men Apocalypses which had no substance and a dumb plot and lots of silly CGI and cartoon action ect.
Pretty much, yeah.
I quite like apocalypse (which I'm aware is an opinion not many share), it definitely wasn't perfect, but I think it had some great elements, the best of which being Michael Fassbender as Magneto
@@ewancoulbeck yes he is good. But Oscar Isaacs is just terrible as Ivan Ooze
@@nifralo2752 I don't think it was necessarily Oscar Isaac that was bad, but the way the character was written could have been much better
@@ewancoulbeck very true he looks and is writtrn like a power rangers baddie. Plus whos dumb idea was it to have Stan Lee pop up in the dramatic nuclear bomb scene
Great movie. The Logan film we’d been waiting for for a long time - violent and thoughtful at the same time. The great thing about the wolverine character is that he is full of emotion, and not just rage, but love, regret and so much more. He is possibly the best mutant character as a representation to explore mental health issues that I can think of and this film shows that perfectly. Plus, what a great final bow for huge action 👍.
Note to DC: this is how comic books take themselves seriously.
Note to The Sprawl, watch the Dark Knight trilogy
DC 2019 - Here's Joker!!!
@@goopooable The third film suck, it was dumb tbh.
@@davidwhitney4066 We live in a society, okay
@@davidvillamonte2007 no it wasn’t TDR was not dumb, say what you will about if you liked it or not that’s subjective but it was a well written movie also critically well received objectively
WOW!!! By far the BEST EVER comic book film adaptation ever.
I loved it. It's incredibly touching and fun and moving and exciting and very exhilarating.
Loved it. By far Hugh Jackman's and Patrick Stewart's best ever film.
All the cast are exemplary.
Xavier's telepathic episodes don't cause earthquakes. They cause paralysis.
Connor Brennan thank you! I was browsing through the comments looking for this. Thanks.
5:16 "people get hurt" made me laugh for some reason.
"People get hurt" is an extreme understatement
It closes the door on the saga in a brutal way, but makes you glad you saw it.
I loved it. Glad you liked it as well Mark.
The best superhero film of all superhero films ever made. Even if you don't like superhero films you can still enjoy this.
the score reminded me of the Midnight Special score at times. In fact, the premise itself did also.
Wait Logan is only 15 in the UK? That's one hell of a rating system.
John Wick: Chapter 2 as well.
Max Nobel It's pretty hard to get an 18 in the UK, though not as hard as the US NC-17. Generally the only 18-rated movies are ones with very strong sexual content, sexual violence, hard drug use etc.
In Germany it got a 16 Rating... Just 10 years earlier this would probably have been banned here... Times are a changing...
Ah great, always thought Mark was pretty down on some of the better X-Men films, so this can only be a good thing. Looking forward to this.
I how Logan doesn’t feel like a Superhero film. It’s a film that will stick with me forever.
This movie is going to kill at the box office. hopefully this will be the last wolverine film for a very long time.
saw it in Bangkok. Enjoyed it. Not into comic movies but loved this.
So glad Mark loved it. Was really looking forward to his verdict before seeing this. Thanks!
Logan is a perfect film. It's the Terminator 2 of this generation.
Never say "of this generation" again.
Burntwood76 xmen apocalypse isn't good
Andreas Nordvall calm down its good but it's not terminator 2 good...
I think the three really good villains added up one great villain.
+film79 Why? Is "of this generation" the "of this generation" of this generation?
Go watch this one, never a fan of x-men but this is something else. HJ was on fire, what a performance, he gave it his all, I believed him 100% and did not expect him to make such an effort for an "x-men movie", this is more than just an action movie as Mark brilliantly describes it.
This review actually makes me want to see the film ;).
Did you?
Blimey, Mark took one hell of a time, coming to a conclusion on whether he liked the film
Great analysis, but a real song and dance
One of the best flipping comic book movies by far
Really loved this movie. The characters are well developed and well know.
There is a depth and maturity to this movie, not present in any prior X-men movie.
Best "superhero" film by a long way including the Dark Knight films. Brutal, stunningly violent at times but also not really a "superhero film" - more a film about the inevitably of aging and eventual death. I'm not always a Marvel movies due to them often a series of explosions and Robert Downey Jnr saying something rye. I Logan however I found quite moving and will not deny shedding a tear. there is humor but it's mostly pitch black and it's utterly not child suitable if you gauge it against previous X Men films. I genuinely loved it. possibly my favourite film of the year so far (and that's in a year with some crackers - T2, Get Out, Personal Shopper, Hacksaw Ridge etc)
Wonderful review as expected, Mr Kermode. I don't know if this has been pointed out to you already, Charles Xavier can't produce earthquakes, he controls minds. When he gets those attacks or seizures it affects everyone! The filmmakers opted to show that by shaking the camera.
I adore this movie up there with my fav’s with dark knight. Top 2 best super hero movies ever made. Even now when I watch end on here it still makes me cry.
Just saw it today, it was far more than what I was expecting from a marvel-type movie. There were great action scenes with adult-level violence but the bits in-between them where eventually genuinely moving and well-acted, and I loved that they had the bravery to show the terrible reality that is alzheimers. 4/5.
Anyone getting a real Blood Father vibe from this?
Between the beard and desert scenery, definitely. Somehow this was bloodier.
I was thinking more of No Country For Old Men, because of the scenery and the somberness of some scenes. In that case, they might as well have called it "No Country For X-Men" or "No Country For Old Man Logan" lol.
Brava, sir!
Last Of Us...
Last Of Us... Sucks...
Wonderful review! 👏🏼 Couldn't have said it better myself.
Great film, and by far the best Marvel adaptation I seen. After getting sick of the X Men series and superhero movies in general I did not bother with this at the cinema and now I regret that, because I really enjoyed it when I saw it on Amazon.
Funny you mention Blood Father. I also got that vibe from this film. Great minds, am I right, Mark? :)
I saw Hugh Jackmans Introduction as Wolverine at the cinema with X-Men 1. Saw his swansong as Wolverine in the cinema. In fact, the only X-Men film I didn't watch on the big screen was Apocalypse.
'Logan' is the only X-Men movie I really enjoyed, other than 'Deadpool' (untouchable).
It goes to show that a strong script, consistent pacing & stellar acting can transcend any stereotype.
Damn he actually said blood father
Why is it that, as soon as a superhero movie comes along which is good and interesting, almost every critic going starts to distance it from the superhero genre?
Yes, but it's still about a superhero, which makes it a superhero movie. As reductive as that sounds (I appreciate that Logan does very much have influences of other genres, particularly Westerns), at its core it is about people with superhuman powers.
I'm not quite sure what I think myself, to be honest, but as much as Logan has been different from other films in the same genre, it still vaguely irritates me that people won't own that superhero movies can be good, if people are given the freedom to do what they want with them.
(Also, to be fair, I think there are a few scenes in Logan where violence is used in a gratuitous way, even though it was as visceral and nasty as it ought to have been. IMO it shows that the filmmakers were given leave to use Wolverine's and X-23's claws as often and as messily as they wanted, after a long stretch of not being allowed to do so.)
I was also reminded of Blood Father that was a very, very strange moment
Mangold really delivered a solid movie. I liked his The Wolverine..and Knight and Day..and to some extent Walk The Line..... but Logan is the movie he'll be remembered for..and I'm sure as time goes on he'll reflect back and be perplexed by that fact. :P
I really enjoyed it and I generally don't like superhero films too much apart from Nolan's batman films and Deadpool. It was a quite surprise to me because I was expecting just another generic Marvel film but that certainly wasn't the case. It seems to me that anything which moves away from the Avengers universe is generally a much better film.
Thank goodness you're back
The film is the best in The X Men series as the film’s graphic, action packed, original, well acted, well directed & strongly intense. (95%) (5/5 stars) (positive)
They don't cause Earthquakes, the seizures cause his mental telepathic abilities to rage out and cause everyone to freeze. I would imagine your muscles cramp up to the point of ripping, just as your mind experiences the worst of migraines times two.
great movie
'So that's what it feels like...' Excuse me, I think I've got something in my eye...
It is among the ranks of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and Spiderman 1 & 2 (Sam Raimi)
Quite a surprise. It's certainly the best x men film made. And a brilliant action thriller road movie in its own right. I was so impressed. It's now in my all time top 20
I read on cracked (not the best site but occasionally distracting) that this analagous to Children of Men, a film I love. The criticism in the article centred on Logan not having the weight of CoM from a lack of depth. I have to admit I am very curious. I'm naturally cynical of very well tuned or focused studio product, but I reckon I will definitely watch it now.
A quite entertaining movie but not as engrossing and deep as I would have wished it to be.
The roughness of the movie is great, both in its action scene and in its characters, so much so that it is probably the best X-Men movie, the one closest to the comics, but the story is really too common for it to be really great and I personnally feel like the movie suffers from the fact that the X-Men franchise has not been consistent enough throughout the years.
It's best enjoyed when you treat it as a self-contained story. This isn't the MCU.
_"people get hurt"_
Yeah well, I guess you could call it like that, when people lose their limbs few seconds before their head gets chopped off. XD
Who would have thought they'd make an art house Wolverine movie
One of the top 10 science fiction movie's. Ever. Brilliant film.
Logan was an absolute masterpiece
I don't think I'm the only one out there who feels that the whole 'comic movie' is getting a bit tiresome now. Logan looks like it does have a solid story that dosent rely on special effects to carry it, I am looking forward to seeing it
jo west All genres are tiresome now. I still get blown away by a film every now and again though.
Great movie, and to think I was bored of Wolverine, finally they get it right! The movie was almost perfect, I don't know what happened but the 3rd act felt dialed back as soon as the other kids show up. Really wish Liev Schreiber could have returned as Sabertooth in this movie as the big baddy.
A very fitting swan song for both Hugh Jackman and Sir Patrick Stewart in their Xmen roles. I laughed more times in this movie than I did in Lego Batman.
I hope DC are paying close attention to this and rethink their approach to their live action movies.
It reminded me of blood father sometimes too.
at last the Wolverine film I've been hoping to get all these years, shame it has to be Jackmans last Wolverine movie when he finally gets it right. His acting here is top class ,Patrick Stewart great also.
Best film of the franchise.
Fabulous film. it was actually quite moving. depressing and stunningly violent though and if that's not your bag I'd avoid.
David Townsend That's my kind of film!
One of the top 5 superhero movies off all time (actually, make that top 3).
Second best Marvel movie, just below Unbreakable.
The movie Dial of DENSITY wanted to be.
Ironically directed by the same person.
Need to see this.
It's been 4 years.
rather wnjoyed it definite bluray purchase
Proper grownups comic book stuff..❤
Excellent movie
- Drive to location
- Have conversation
- Sound of approaching vehicles
- Needlessly "R-Rated"Action
- Drive to new location
- Have conversation
- etc
Still liked it though. I'd rather re-watch The Rover or Blue Ruin though.
This film was beautiful. It wasn't a great comic book film, or superhero film. It was a great FILM, full stop.
Great send off
In the clip, how did the bad guys not know that he's wolverine ?
Saw it on Wednesday. Fantastic.
X-Men meets The Last of Us.
I liked this film. Getting older and arthritis, we all have to face it, and fight it.
"Logan" - a simple emotionally-charged film with just dozens of great moments that tear at your heart strings or just get you cheering for the good guys. I felt rather than knew it was good partly because I refused to let myself analyse it for plot holes; I immersed myself and just accepted the whole premise; a bit like when you read a very good book. I think Tolkien called this the creation of a secondary world wherein it is as real as your own world whilst you are there and so it deserves the same level of emotional commitment (and you are too busy living it to question things out of your control out of fear of missing something important). The whole team did a great job in making their world important enough for me to give it my complete attention.
Batman 1989 is a 15 certificate......just like this film.
‘Logan’ is almost certainly the most thoughtful of the Marvel movies to date, but in essence it’s still Wolverine doing his blood-splatting, blade-wielding thing. As a curtain call for Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart the film is apt and ticks a lot of boxes most other sci-fi films don’t know exist. 3/5
It's not a Marvel movie, though, it's a Fox movie with Marvel characters.
best superhero movie ever, hand down
Best superhero movie ever by a country mile
Thinly veiled remake of National Lampon's Vacation
Everyone says this film is a remake of a dozen other movies. The whole point of their inclusion was to parallel Logan's story-line, and vice versa. That is how Logan interrogated the superhero genre and set the stage for something better.
thank you for randomly making me laugh out loud whilst scrolling thru the comments.
I think Mark liked it. So looking forward to it but is it going to make me tear up?
American Pancake if you have any interest in the characters involved, definitely
I am a softy and will for sure- I know I am going to absolutely love this film.
I'm not Mary Whitehouse. I love Goodfellas and Oldboy. I'm not a prude. I liked the film. BUT did it really need all the swearing. It was like a young teen who'd just discovered the f-bomb. The whole screaming and slicing thing was effective for a while then it just became tiring. A lot of people are saying its not just a great xmen film but a great film full stop. I disagree , if I hadn't been seeing Charles and Logan since 2000 I doubt I would really care. The girl was good like the film, not great.
Earthquakes???
I was reminded of Blood Father, too, but Logan is an infinitely better movie - for many reasons, but not least because Dafne Keen, who plays the daughter X-23/Laura, is so astonishing on screen. Whereas the actress who played Mel Gibson's daughter in Blood Father was terrible and ruined that movie for me.
