  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We can decide between allowing things to weigh us down or we can decide to fly.
    Steph Davis is a professional climber, known for her free ascents of El Capitan, testpiece cracks in the Moab desert, and her numerous alpine ascents in South America, the Karakorum and the Arctic. She was the first woman to free climb the Salathe Wall on El Capitan, and the second woman to free El Cap in a day. She made the first one day ascent of Torre Egger in Patagonia, and was also the first woman to summit the peak. Steph is the only woman to free solo the Longs Peak Diamond and was the first person to free solo the North Face of Castleton Tower (followed by a BASE jump from the summit).
    Steph is also an avid BASE jumper and wingsuit pilot. A member of the elite Squirrel team, she is one of just a few people in the world, and the only woman, to be combining free soloing with BASE, and has made a specialty of climbing and jumping desert towers in the Utah desert.
    Steph has written two books, High Infatuation and Learning to Fly, and she blogs at highinfatuation.com. She owns and operates Moab Base Adventures in Moab, Utah, a base jumping and climbing guide service.
    About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    Great talk Steph. Met Mario one time, in the mid '90's at the New River Gorge bridge. He was with a couple other guys from Quebec...Bert and Martin. My friends and I jumped from the superstructure....they jumped from the roof of their van and zoomed past us. Right in front of us. Mario looked over his shoulder at us with a big smile. I'll never forget it. We all celebrated at the bottom, then had all our gear confiscated on the way out and got to come back for our court date (did I mention it WASN'T Bridge Day:-). In my short interaction that weekend, I found the same qualities you describe here. What a human.

    I truly enjoyed this. I only spent a day with Mario, but I remember how much he lit up when he spoke about you and your book, your piano playing. I was so blessed - he helped me overcome my lifetime suffering of PTSD from multiple traumas. I was so blessed. This video was beautiful! Thanks for your tribute to not only you, but a wonderful man who truly helped me. Thanks for your wonderful share!!! It's super cool that you shared the superball bounce - endurance vs resilience!
    I love how you shared it :)xo
    I know that this is really silly, Steph. But I'm so proud of you and I don't even know you. And I'm so grateful for the blessing of having spent the day with Mario. He mattered to my life - he added bounce to my resilience superball.

    Very brave woman to bare her soul and expose her pain so that others may use her example to find strength in their own battles with adversity.

    Steph's first husband, Dean Potter, died a year after this talk was given... in another wingsuit BASE accident. It's very very dangerous

    its like she lives for excitement and make her life a story. she comes across as pretty selfish to me

    • @snowboardfreak5264
      @snowboardfreak5264 8 лет назад +2

      +Keanu Reaves She does what she wants to do.. How is that selfish?

    • @keanureaves2228
      @keanureaves2228 8 лет назад

      she used her husbands as characters in a story for a crowd. i wouldn't care if she spent that time free-soloing

    • @rednac6182
      @rednac6182 8 лет назад +3

      +Keanu Reaves she uses her experience to help other people who are struggling with the loss of a loved one. I think she's one of the most inspiring climbers alive. If you think Steph does it for the money or attention or something like that, there must be something really wrong with you, and you know very little (probably nothing) about her.

      +red nac do'nt put words in my mouth. I find her inspirational and admirable as well, that's why I'm here. I highly doubt she cares about attention. Nonetheless, this ted talk was irresponsible

      @sekulrtsnfnugg6126 Год назад

      She made the choice to not have children bc of the risks involved with free soloing and base jumping. She sounds like anything but selfish.
