    3 years later and I'm sure this mindset has changed. Or at least it should. As someone who's been in Cyber Security for almost 4 years, skip this video and go for it if you have a passion for it. It's worth it

    Your advice is discouraging and I disagree with your views.
    You can be in Cyber Security after doing a certification or a degree....Just make sure you have a solid foundation of knowledge by doing Security+ Cert and doing GIAC cert or CISSP cert or CASP cert.
    After doing your certs find your target market in the cyber security or IT niche and find out what others are not offering as a service in your area. Do some brainstorming and pick up a unique service you can offer and build your business around that.
    First start working with small micro businesses then you can scale later.

    I am an entry level cyber security professional hence I got myself inside the door. It is my opinion that it is a great profession for people who are willing to put time, training, education, dedication and effort. It is hard (you must be right all the time), broad and it is not profitable right away but for those who can make a difference, do it. Don't listen to naysayers. There is a demand in the job market and as a woman, I will make a difference in this niche.

    • @Jelloz104

      +Stacey Nyongesa My biggest worry about getting into the field is that if a mistake happens it is a lot harder to fix. How much schooling/practice did you go through before you were at a point where you were confident enough to be able to work the job you do? Thanks in advance if you read this comment and get back to me. Hope you work is going well.

    • @StaceyNyongesa
      @StaceyNyongesa 8 лет назад +1

      Jelloz104 Mistakes can happen even with the best professionals. How you handle the mistake is imperative. The right temperament and implementation is key. I still maintain that prevention is better than cure. I graduated in November 2014 after 3 years of learning General IT(undergrad) with some Security modules. Nothing else. I have been practicing since September 2015, so I am very new to the field. You do not need to be an expert right away. I intend to do further certifications with my employer. Right now I do most of my reading and research alone. I bought an e-book CSX-Fundamentals of Security from ISACA and I have also began reading ISO 27001 AND COBIT 5 which are the frameworks/standards of Infosec, among others. Schooling only gives you the theory, practicing will help with confronting problems. Practicing is like being thrown in the deep end and learning how to swim. Work is great. Good luck!

    Want to do IT Security? My advice is to join the Army and do iOS development, lol come on Eli, if he wanted to be a programmer he would have known it by then. I honestly still can't think of a reason why you're so "anti IT" and all for mobile development. Does it bring in good money? Sure. Does later in your career having 10-20 years experience in management/it or consulting bring in multiple times more money? How could you argue it doesn't.

    The problem is, companies often figure that it is cheaper to pay for damage compensation than for having security concepts implemented in the first place, so the only ones who get paid very well are those who are security programmers, who are securing banking transactions and develop custom intrusion detection and stuff like that. Applying and configuring off the shelf security solutions (DDoS protection, blocking ports, set up a HTTPS certificate etc.) should be expectable from every web master who installs and maintains online software. If you have no experience in the field, stay away from it, because if you fail or do "pseudo security", literally, peoples money or even lives may be at risk. "Cyber security" is largely some kind of media bullshit term anyway.

    • @AlexRodriguez-de9sr
      @AlexRodriguez-de9sr 8 лет назад +5

      First of all security programmers do not setup IDS's, that's the network admin's job or security analyst's job. And what the hell is "pseudo security"? Please if you don't know what you're talking about just stay offline.

  • @Dydreth
    @Dydreth 9 лет назад +1

    Perceived job demand is "what it is" with us and cyber security. Given the number of hacks we've seen over the past year or so as well as the stated need for more security, it shouldn't be hard to understand.
    A lot of people are simply unhappy with their current jobs, or may still be unemployed from the recent economic downturn. A lot of people are on the outside looking in to an industry which is supposed to have double digit job growth over the coming decade. From that, it should be fairly easy to understand why people are asking questions about this field.

    • @Dydreth
      @Dydreth 9 лет назад +1

      Another thing I'm curious about is why you keep bringing up the military and security clearance. I think, although I may be wrong, many people are asking about securing business' servers against hackers in order to protect companies' proprietary information and customer's information rather than government secrets. Working for Barnes and Noble, for example, as a cyber security expert probably doesn't require classified, secret, or top secret clearance.

    How about getting into a DoD Intelligence Agency, such as the NSA? Instead of military. Cause Military life isnt for everyone, especially active duty. I have friends/family members in the military and hear theres a lot of BS you have to put up with, especially the enlisted ranks (such as PT requirements, being treated badly by superiors, favoritism, etc). Plus the constant moving around the country, long tours deployed overseas away from family, etc. I think getting into a US Govt/DOD Intelligence Agency like NSA, DIA, CIA or FBI as a civilian government employee is another viable route into Cyber. Still working for US Fed government without having to put up with a lot of the BS that comes with military life

    He is right though, for anyone still watching this video. The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines offer cyber programs. The Navy has a big extensive cyber programs such as Cryptologic Warfare, Cryptologic Technician and Cyber Warfare Engineer. The Army has a whole bunch of Cyber jobs and the Air force. The Marines have one in particular I believe. The military does provide a good foundation to not only enhance your own knowledge but give you certain experiences the civilian world can't give you. I can say that with confidence.

    As someone with experience in this area, I disagree. While the military and the cleared world are a good way to work in cyber security/ information security, it is far from the only or best way. A clearance can help you get a job, however employers are still going to want to see relevant knowledge and experience. It can be easy to get that on the civilian side through certifications and CTFs and local infosec groups.
