As an employer, raises aren't typically even considered unless it has been pre-scheduled, or I feel like the work of the employee is worth paying more.
99% of people are replaceable.
This is a lesson I learned the hard way when I was 17.
I lived with a family I was helping to build a log cabin for their summer home.
I was working extremely hard, and thought I deserved more than the minimum wage he was paying me, so after a few months, I asked for a dollar raise.
He said, "I would be happy to pay you $8.00/hr. But, I'm also going to start charging you rent for every month you're staying in my house."
When I told him, "nevermind!" he told me to never ask for a raise unless you have an equal or better alternative job opportunity lined up.
Now, I run my own business and that was the first long lasting lesson I have brought with me.
Rule #2 The "Chosen People" will always make a profit.
You lived with another family who didn't even charge you for anything. They even paid you. But that wasn't enough for you. You are a grade A dickwad.
In a normal employment it's completely normal to renegotiate numbers. However if you're on minimum wage you're basically a replaceable nobody on the floor. And that is the vast majority of the 99%, so I'll give you that one.

This type of haggling only works to your advantage in the short term. I have regular customers that are hagglers and while I still serve them, i leave them out of the loop on many things that i'm more than happy to tell my good regular paying customers. I always hold the new stuff for my good paying customers and wait until they pick through it before the haggler customers see it. Trust me, if you're a regular haggler at a business, that business is doing something to disadvantage you.
