I know about the history of Portugal, was born in 1955 in Holland, and we learned at school what was going on and ofcourse, being a child of the 70tees we were all leftwingers. It is a pitty I cannot understand what is said, the words of Grandola Vila Morena always brings me to tears, specially with these images going with it.
I was also born in 1955 in The Netherlands! I lived in Portugal between 1980 and 1985 and I have a deep connection with the country. The translation is: Grândola, dark (brown) village Home of fraternity The people rule Inside you, oh village! Inside you, oh village The people rule Home of fraternity Grandola, dark village. Home of fraternity Grandola, dark village In every face there is unity The people rule. In the shadow of an Evergreen Oak That doesn't even know it's age I swore to have as my companion Grândola, your determination

Amália also covered this song, but the original is from José Afonso! The steps of the original version were recorded by José Afonso and others in the studio! I love this version!! 25 de Abril is still yet to be accomplished!
Vandaar. Leuk dat je er ook van geniet!
Han?
@DirkjeA The song talks about a village in alentejo, district of setubal. The song tries to give you a feeling of friendship and freedom, letting you know that the land was there long before man came and claimed it for its own. Basically, the song is about the freedom of the people, respect for the land and the friendship between man, unity of the people. The people rule, not the will of one man.
@Amaester Thanks for the explanation. This makes the song even more dear to me. It is great to see people so united and filled with love and friendship for eachother. I wish we could hang on to that feeling all over the world. WOuld make it a better place to live in. Thanks for taking the trouble to answer me and I do hope you have a nice week.
@DirkjeA Graag gedaan.
Same verse as above, but reversed. Hope i helped DirkjeA, and thank you for keeping this song alive :) It has a profound meaning to the Portuguese people
The song is in Portuguese, it's a Portuguese song from the April 25th '74 Revolution: A translation in english Grândola, brown town Land of fraternity It's the people who lead Inside you, oh city
Inside you, oh city It's the people who lead Land of fraternity Grândola, brown town
On each corner there's a friend In each face there's equality Grândola, swarthy town Land of fraternity
Land of fraternity Grândola, brown town In each face there's equality It is the people who lead
In the shadow of a holm oak Which no longer knew its age I swore as my companion, Grândola, your will
Grândola, your will I swore as my companion In the shadow of a holm oak Which no longer knew its age
"Under the shadow of an "oak" Whos age i didnt knew I swore to have as my friend Grândola, your will" The translation of azinheira to oak inst exactly correct, but i couldn't remember the correct term. This verse talks about the land, and how it was old when man was new. The meaning of this verse is profound, for it talks about the unity of man and the land around him.
You are aware I could translate it for you, but it would just sound silly in english, right? :) It's beautiful, nonetheless, appealing to fraternity and union.
"In each corner, a friend In each face equality Grândola, vila morena Land of faternity" This verse enforces the idea of equality, freedom, friendship and unity of the people. Same as above
"Grândola, vila morena Land of fraternity And the people rules Inside you, oh city" Vila morena is due to the location of the village, the landscape, which is typical of the region. "Dentro de ti, ó cidade E o povo é quem mais ordena Terra da faternidade Grândola, vila morena" Same lyrics as the first verse, except the order of the phrases were reversed.
This is a quite wonderful version of Zeco's magnificent lyric --- and moving too, as many have pointed out. Who's the pretty announcer in the red dress?
Viva a Humanidade nunca me ouviras dizer viva o capitalismo.
