I just bought at auction a 19 ft. O'Day Sailboat Mariner 1964, it had everything you need including a trailer. All it needed was pressure washed and polish the gelcoat to look good again. I gave 67 bucks for it, what a deal. It cost me more to get the title and registration for 2 years. Just need some nicer weather to take it out on the water.
I wonder about the title. Was it the same as any clear title, or did the marina just get something that makes it they buyers' problem with past owner claims?
Great follow-up video. I wonder how many people read the fine print before bidding. If there's one take away from your video, it's that folks should think ahead and have a plan.
No you didn’t miss it. It is usually March and September but all depends on inventory. I called and they said there is not enough inventory for the next auction so we wait… 🤙🏼
Thanks man. I used to ride them braps!!! 😂 Get into it! I used to think that sailing and owning a sailboat was only for rich people. But if you need to be on a budget, you can and anybody can own a boat and sail. Do it! 👊🏼
I've no idea why your video came up for me, but I'm glad it did because I like your video and I'm playing catch-up right now. I think the rules for the auction all seem really fair. And having to take the boat out for six months makes total sense if you plan on totally refurbishing it. I don't think I'd want to sleep on a boat that I didn't know was reasonably water tight.
Right on Robert, check out my other videos, because I’m not all about auctions. That was just two of the videos that I made. But thank you for watching and I hope you like my other videos. Cheers!
Thanks for the update, along with those links and helpful tips. I’ll plan to attend the auction in September, unless I find or build something specific to my special height requirements. Being 6’5” limits my choices. Thank again and stay salty 👍.
Nice job good information and that’s what my old man had as a Catalina 30 nice sailing boat. I still got the fatty knees 8 feet right now she’s a good sailor a good rowboat will hold a 2 1/2 hp and get you wherever you want to go. I will have fun with that this summer. I sure would love to live on a boat that you do that a little bit in your marina with my dad was there enjoyed it dearly can’t get it out of your blood
Thanks for all the important information. I posted a question on the first RUclips, then I saw the info at the end. I think a big issue for most people will be finding a place to take it out of the water where you can rent space and work on it. That could be difficult. I have no clue what the tow service costs are say from that marina to San Pedro or other nearby area.
That is definitely the hard part; finding a place to take it. That’s why I made the second video so people would understand what they need to do if they want to buy one.
Got it - This is your new "Boat Auction Channel". It's great info and very eye opening as some of the interiors look devastated. On the outside it may look like a great deal, but surely once you get in to the nitty gritty, let alone the condition of the inside, it's like opening a massive can of worms. Yikes! Good luck with your new direction with the channel! 😜
Thanks but it’s not my new direction to just cover auctions 😂. Just local boating content. My next videos will be back to sailing and DIY stuff. Cheers!
Sorry dude, couldn't help myself at the start of the vid. This is SUPERB info to know for us dreamers. I've been dreaming for about 4 years now. Awesome vids and dig your channel! Look fwd to seeing you on the water! (In the video, not actually 'on the water')
I was into sailing back in the 90's when I rented a slip for a 40footer in Florida for $75 Today it's hard to find a slip for that kind of a boat for $500 a month Damn marinas have priced boating out of most people's range, OBVIOUS GREED
I agree it’s expensive but so is a cheeseburger 🍔. Would you want to rent a slip in a marina where your neighbors are also paying $100 per month and possibly living there? It would bring an undesirable element in my opinion. Sure I would want a cheaper slip but people would abuse the cheap rent. Just saying.
@@sailingsole $100 slips just do NOT exist today like back in the 90's As things change with this recession, they might as boats become anchors around the owners neck Check out the marina auctions in Cali, Catalina 30's going for $400
Hey Andy, I'm curious about whether they give you any idea as to the condition of the engines or outboards? So, if you can't move the boat under power then what? If you need to do some work that is a safety concern, 6 days isn't very long, a month maybe. FYI in my area a 1982 Catalina 30 tall rig like yours just sold for $26,000. The boat was in good shape with new sails. Anyway, anyone who buys from an auction, buyer beware, know what you're getting into. Great Video Andy, Fairwind and sunny days.
Thanks Bob. You don’t know the if the engine works or not. It’s a roll of the dice. The game plan is usually tow it to the slip you have already reserved to a local marina (not the three I mention that you can’t have it in for 6 months). Cheers!
In Cali, You Also Have to Have a Boater Card. Currently It's Only for People 35 Yrs Old, and Younger, but New Law Being Phased in, and by Sometime in 2025, EVERYONE, Regardless of Age, Will Require a Boat card.
I’m not looking forward to that but might not be a bad idea. Allowing ANYONE to skipper a watercraft is obviously a bad idea. I’m still not looking forward to more red tape and DMV fees or licenses.
"This is not a boat auction channel" well maybe it should (in-between the rest of your sailing) Your video on boat auction scored 200 times higher than your average views. What does that tell you? WE LOVE boat auctions 😊 Give the people what they want -haha New subscriber here and you sound like a really nice and honest person. Happy to have found your channel (when searching for powerboats boats for sale)
Haha I know right! I plan to cover the next boat auction in September and I’m going to the Newport Beach International Boat Show next weekend. I may make a video on the “luxury” side of boating although I know everyone wants a cheap boat. 😂 Most of my videos will be about sailing (who cares right!) but that’s what I want to do and I’ll cover the auctions when they come around. Thanks for the watch and sub 👊🏼 Cheers!
i would say the drivers license is to confirm the identity of the new owner. IE, i buy a boat and it sinks. I run off. The marina is responsible for salvage. By having some legal ID, the new owner will have a proven identity and a bill of sale becomes legal.
👍🏼 What marinas? I’m sure everyone will want to know what marinas let you in without insurance. My marina will not allow anyone to rent a slip without insurance and each year you need to show that it’s still valid.
Quick Question: How Do You Know How Much Marine Fees Are? People Should Be Reminded, If There Are marine Fees Due, You Must Pay for the Fees. The marine Fees are Applied to the Vessel, and Not the Owner. So, Basically the Marine Puts a 'Lean' on the Boat, and in Order to Get the Title in Your Name, You Have to Satisfy All Leans.
Not true at all but do you’re own due diligence. The marina wants people to buy them so that they don’t have to bare the expense of hauling them out for salvage. They pay to get them salvaged if nobody buys them at the auction is my understanding.
I only know about the LB auction at this point and it’s only twice per year. I think the next one will be in September but I’ll put out an announcement as soon as I know. Stay tuned!
Hi! What I don't understand is this: Why didn't the auctioneers at least remove the trash, pump out the water and do some very basic cleaning of those boats? I think they'll sell for a lot more then.
I don’t know but I’m guessing it’s some sort of legal or safety reason or maybe they just don’t have the resources to do it. Clearly they would be more attractive if they were cleaned out.
Good plan but that would only work on the smaller vessels. You would need a huge trailer, a cradle and a big rig truck to move it. Sounds expensive to me.
With my sailboat my marina requires insurance...insurance requires a survey to insure boat is seaworthy and will not sink, even at dock. Survey requires out of water inspection of hull and thru hull fittings. Then in water inspection of hull and all a safety required equipment. Also general condition of the vessel. Vessel must be able to move under self power (Run from a hurricane if required to a new port). These sailboats look like they have more work required then seven days will allow? Can USA Coastguard refuse to allow an unsafe vessel to put to sea to be moved to a new port? If you are a solo sailor maybe not, but any crew onboard that's a total different story. As soon as you leave that dock you are the captain in a legal world, responsible to insure the safety of all onboard. In my area we have nice looking boats being crushed because they have aged out and no insurance firm wants the risk.
