As an Australian living in Germany, I'm absolutely disgusted by the fact that in Australia, there is hardly any coverage worth publishing of this highly important case. It doesn't make me proud to be Australian!
Zizek successfully argues many key points, the most pertinent is that Assange exposed the US government’s nefarious actions, not to hostile regimes, but to their own people.
Yet he neglects the most important one. I mean here we are, as always discussing the punishment of a man who revealed war crimes, while no one is even giving the people who committed the freaking war crimes a thought. When is their trail due i wonder? Nobody ever talks about that anymore, especially not the media. The are oddly enough more concerned with the implications this case has for the freedom of the press...
He DIDNT leak thousands of documents, he didnt leak ANY, he PUBLISHED documents that others leaked. He commited no crime. The words used at the start are an example of framing the issue with poor biased language
@@farrider3339 he may have done, I didnt listen all the way through - I am familiar with the details and follow the case closely and campaign on it - I was losing the will to live ;-) - but the interviewer clearly said at the start that he leaked thousands of documents. This is like a headline and typical of mainstream media - many people will have picked up JUST the headline statement and its important we correct statements like this, otherwise they act as propaganda.

We all assume that national governments are required to run the affairs of a nation. However , how do we hold our governments accountable to the citizens when government policy clearly violate our freedoms and right to life and the pursuit of happiness? How did governments become so powerful and unaccountable?
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in which incidents exposed by Wikileaks took place, have already been forgotten by the American public. It's ironic that Assange may end up imprisoned for life because of matters that few people care about anymore in the country that wants him punished. Julian Assange is not a citizen of the US and was not residing on US territory when he carried out the activities that have upset US authorities. Any legal action against him should be taken in the courts of the country where he was residing when he did what he did. It is an important principle, and one that is widely exploited by shady entrepreneurs who set up their businesses in countries where they can't be prosecuted for anything. International law is not so kind to whistleblowers. If the US can exercise legal terror against anyone anywhere in the world for any reason, other countries will follow suit. Vladimir Putin has issued arrest warrants for foreign nationals he doesn't like. He is only following the example set by The United States.
Talking about government more afraid of exposing misdeeds to the people then to the enemy, what Zizek doesn't get as a socialist is that for government the most dangerous enemy is the people, not another county's "nomenklatura".
Aren't War Crimes considered to be one of the worst crimes around and one that a government who committed them supposed to be deeply ashamed of? It doesn't even seem like this is the issue at all. Obviously, this seems like just a way for our government and military to turn the tables on Assange in order to ignore these crimes and turn him into the real criminal. This is not a case in which the issue discussed is freedom of speech, freedom of the press or criminalization of journalism. The most fundamental question in the case is whether Julian Assange is a human being who can hold rights (including the right to practice as a journalist and not be extradited to a country that treats him as a political enemy) or an "inanimate thing " which England can freely use to expand and reinforce its privileged diplomatic relationship with the USA. Not framing the case correctly is a way of allowing the English Supreme Court to dehumanize Julian Assange, I think. Thank God Zizek isn't a lawyer. He would likely undermine Assange's defense.
Zizek uses an example of a failed colour revolution attempted coup of an Arab country, not to support these softer methods of Imperialism, but to support the sort of hidd3n war crimes that Julian exposed as zizeks preferred method of American imperialism. Perhaps that's why he's so well promoted

WL started 2006/07 as a platform for 'an uncensorable system for untraceable mass document leaking' (self-description from 2010). That meant: many of the leaks were published firstly on Wikileaks' websites, and not always in cooperation with newspapers, so the documents included not just informants' names, but also other sensitive personal information like social security numbers, medical information, credit card numbers, and even details of suicide attempts - they were NOT ALWAYS carefully redacted / blacked before release (as Zizek suggests) - which is probably justifiable for the good and necessary thing of transparency and clarification of war crimes etc. It's horrible we live in a world where the US government constructs a 175-year-case out of this. But concerning journalistic standards Wikileaks had an inconsistent editorial policy, management was too much relying on Assange himself, its advisory board was purely informal and didn't even meet regularly (which comittee is Zizek speaking about?). I'm not creating myths, read what Daniel Domscheidt-Berg and many others from WL team have written on such cases of criticism. Sadly, this important criticism is completely overshadowed on the scandalous treatment of Assange in the last few yrs...

An extadition is to gather in some one who fled one country in which he committed a crime in order to get that person back. This is NOT the case.
Extradition to the USA is illegal by even USA standards, he is not a US citizen and has never committed a crime on US soil OR any where else.

Silence is a form of complicity. Navalny was not a fool to return to Russia, he knew well what his fate would be. The difference is that we are talking about him, the world knows of him. Many have heard his message and he will be remembered. Other Russian dissidents are unknown to us, they are effectively silenced, they live but remain in the shadows.
Navalny had near fascists like political views, its a complete fabrication that he's a "noble Saint of democracy" as is the elites propoganda line. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in which incidents exposed by Wikileaks took place, have already been forgotten by the American public. It's ironic that Assange may end up imprisoned for life because of matters that few people care about anymore in the country that wants him punished.
Julian Assange is not a citizen of the US and was not residing on US territory when he carried out the activities that have upset US authorities. Any legal action against him should be taken in the courts of the country where he was residing when he did what he did. It is an important principle, and one that is widely exploited by shady entrepreneurs who set up their businesses in countries where they can't be prosecuted for anything. International law is not so kind to whistleblowers. If the US can exercise legal terror against anyone anywhere in the world for any reason, other countries will follow suit. Vladimir Putin has issued arrest warrants for foreign nationals he doesn't like. He is only following the example set by The United States.

Aren't War Crimes considered to be one of the worst crimes around and one that a government who committed them supposed to be deeply ashamed of? It doesn't even seem like this is the issue at all. Obviously, this seems like just a way for our government and military to turn the tables on Assange in order to ignore these crimes and turn him into the real criminal. This all doesn't make any sense? We posted a Folk Song on our channel called "Please Set Julian Assange Free", that it is getting hardly any traction. I would love it if people would listen, because in the lyrics we try to state his case for freedom.

This is not a case in which the issue discussed is freedom of speech, freedom of the press or criminalization of journalism. The most fundamental question in the case is whether Julian Assange is a human being who can hold rights (including the right to practice as a journalist and not be extradited to a country that treats him as a political enemy) or an "inanimate thing " which England can freely use to expand and reinforce its privileged diplomatic relationship with the USA. Not framing the case correctly is a way of allowing the English Supreme Court to dehumanize Julian Assange, I think. Thank God Zizek isn't a lawyer. He would likely undermine Assange's defense.

Short answer: no. Long answer: The two names mentioned were Bushmaster7 and Crazyhorse15. "Bushmaster 7" was the callsign of AH-64 Apache crew. "Crazyhorse"was the Joint Terminal Attack Contriller at Tactical Operations Command post. JTAC picks targets and prioritizes them, giving clearance to "engage" to crews. No one will ever know the names, identities , and locations of service members. Army Inspector General investigated this action and found no wrong doing, so no further records exist.

WL started 2006/07 as a platform for 'an uncensorable system for untraceable mass document leaking' (self-description from 2010). That meant: many of the leaks were published firstly on Wikileaks' websites, and not always in cooperation with newspapers, so the documents included not just informants' names, but also other sensitive personal information like social security numbers, medical information, credit card numbers, and even details of suicide attempts - they were NOT ALWAYS carefully redacted / blacked before release (as Zizek suggests) - which is probably justifiable for the good and necessary thing of transparency and clarification of war crimes etc. It's horrible we live in a world where the US government constructs a 175-year-case out of this.
But concerning journalistic standards Wikileaks had an inconsistent editorial policy, management was too much relying on Assange himself, its advisory board was purely informal and didn't even meet regularly (which comittee is Zizek speaking about?). I'm not creating myths, read what Daniel Domscheidt-Berg and many others from WL team have written on such cases of criticism. Sadly, this important criticism is completely overshadowed on the scandalous treatment of Assange in the last few yrs...
