Agreed. The hand drawn version has so much more soul in it because it was HANDS ON. And each cell made was so pristine and detailed. I miss Macross and I applaud the induction of 3D animation. At least they didn't change the storyline and added a few new scenes and has a modern look to it. I love it because it's Macross but I still prefer the good-old hand drawn classic. Frontier and Delta was awesome in their own right, though.
A better example of more fluid hand drawn animation would be the Macross movie “Do You Remember Love” (1984) The old graphics were stunning. Good enough for today’s standards of detail.
How good or bad the hand drawn depends on how much money the studio has. Also depends on what studio that working on the anime, sometimes it isn't consistent. Sometimes, you'll get Max vs Millia knife fight scene if you gave them to wrong studio, sometimes you'll get scaling wrong, sometimes perspective screw up. Upsized the budget by 3 or 4 times, you'll get DYRL or Patlabor movie. Nowadays, CGI saved those money spent on hand drawn animation for same effect and more. The crazy transformation details (like VF-0 transformation in Macross Zero) that deemed almost impossible in hand drawn are easily made in CGI.
KoeSeer Hand drawn animation augmented with cgi is the way to go for me at least. That way money is saved on crazy details like the vf-0 but it doesn't look as out of place since it's not a whole giant robot
The sequence where Hikaru does that roll while blasting battlepods is one of my favorite bits of animation. Someone got to re-do it and they made it look like a toilet paper roll rolling on the floor.
The hand-drawn felt more atmospheric, it made you feel like you were actually getting ready to head into space for battle. Meanwhile the CGI made it feel like your usual generic mecha.
both versions are awesome, the old hand work without computers and cg effects was awesome for that times. think how hard was animate these details, beside some perspective errors, still was a good work, mainly for that year. for a 80s, that was innovation, the angles, the scenes, the idea. but this CGi, is still impressive, most animes or movies made in japan not explore the CGi correctly, but it was the most well done work that I already saw, some differences was not that good, but other changes made it better, anyway, they respected the opening in a way that is a example of what every studio have to follow. basically this new version is a dream coming true, who made the old version, watching this full frame animated 3D, would be happy to see what they thought but could not accomplish yet in that times

And in my mind, being an old geezer that was a kid when the original came out, I have enough fantasy to paint my "perfect version". In my mind, if I want, I cant count each hair Risa is shaking on SDF-1 Bridge... it's more than 30 years I'm imagining it. My Fantasy best version ever. Thank you, to any author involved in Macross that made my fantasies True. Even as old gezeer now ;
@@CapitanoAraym actually, CGI can be made with passion... it is just that we don't see it. Good CGI is like good special effects, you never really notice it unless you actually search for it. The real fun with CGI is that you can literally make all the details you want and 'paint it' onto the models. That's how quite a bit of GitS: Stand Alone Complex got its Tachikomas to be so good. ;) Also, CGI is more than just 3D models, it is also 2D. There is an SFW Jollyjack strip of the struggles of using traditional 2D drawing compared to the power of computer aided 2D drawing. ;)
We didn't have an alien Battleship crash land on our planet in 1988. That means we missed 10 years of unification wars and technology jumping forward by at least 600 years. Not to mention a few hundred million casualties.
OK, I got the date wrong. We're still missing the crashed alien Battleship, the 10 or so years of unification wars, few hundred million casualties and the technology jump...
agree with you, I like them both, Delta is actually good series if you ignore the idol stuff thowing around, I just dont understand why people hate delta the heroine of delta is by far better than Minmay in original macross not the one in "do you remember love" she such a bitch in the original that it make me feel really depress.
I like both version and I hope to see more advanced versions as the technology grows, it show how far we grow from the original dream from the macross anime. I remember watching a digital photo frame in this anime closing song, and it was in the 80's. I would love to watch a 3d cgi or maybe a live action version of this opening song
+Do You Remember MACROSS? What are the fonts you use for "The Super Dimension Fortress MACROSS" at the top of the video and "Original Opening" & "Blu-ray BOX Complete Edition" at the bottom of the video?
Sad, the blue ray edition should have been more faithful to the cool 70's styling of the animation. Allot of the choices seem to be arbitrary and random such as the random character inserts. I do like the updated definition and frame rate. I honestly don't remember the old frame rate being anywhere near as bad.
+Fenris30 This is the only thing the new one has going for it. I'd like to prefer it for that reason too, but it falls way short in every other department. Except for the SDF-1 ascending through the cloud cover, every single scene looks worse and all around soulless. Heck, even the hand-drawn cockpits look more modern than the CGI ones, that's how bad it is.
Wtf? Robotech is the same as Macross, just different title name. Macross is the first japanese release and changed it to Robotech for copyright reasons when released with dubbed.
Well, here is the issue with that. Yes, Robotech is basically SDF Macross dubbed, but there are some major differences. For example: the term 'Veritech' is used in Robotech, but it is never used in Macross - ever. Also in the Robotech timeline the world was already at war prior to the SDF arrival, while in Macross the Anti-U.N war didn't begin until AFTER the SDF crashed into earth. Also, look closer and you'll realize that everything else holding the Robotech title is NOT related to Macross - and are really just a bunch of other unrelated franchises strung together. For example: Robotech the Movie is basically footage spliced together from "Megazone 23" and "Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross", maintaining a nearly non-existant link to the original series. And the entirety of Robotech's third generation was basically "Genesis Climber MOSPEADA" only dubbed so that it SEEMS that its connected to the rest of the Robotech, when in actuallity it doesn't. Robotech makes no mention of any of the events of the rest of the Macross series - no Macross 7, Macross Frontier, Delta, Plus, or Zero. Therefore I consider the Macross series superior, because its continuity makes sense, and its not built by splicing together various other unrelated series into one clustered mess.
I like both, good to see they didn't really stray from the original and added in a few little nice titbits, Macross and Robotech we're part of my childhood so I didn't even know this was a thing till I nostalgia dove into some youtube haha each to there own
I like the original better, the editing and camera angles were a lot better. If they'd not had 120 frames per second on the CG in the new one it wouldn't look so jarring and out of place.
Its funny you say that because the framerate on the original is MUCH lower. It was common to capture each drawing twice in a row, at 24 frames a second for 35mm film, which brings the effective framerate of the handrawn animation to 12 fps! The problem with the motion on the 3D version is they are showing to much of it. The lower number of images your eye is seeing in the original forces your brain to fill in the missing pieces. You can still use these techniques with 3D, but its cheaper to have the computer do it.
In fairness a lot of time went into a remastered version I think we have to thank the folks who did the work and burned time and effort to complete it. But I still like to original one even if it has badly drawn sequences the story that goes into producing that well it has it s own set of circumstances and well its own merit towards the Japanese animators who did the best that they could to meet the deadline. This is also the reason why Do you remember love has its own significance when I rewatch it since well all the bad stuff got corrected there and the score is also different.
Did you know that BOTH VERSIONS belong to the 2012 bluray disc, right? The video should be titled original remastered version, vs remake Macross Fever for pachinko version.
Schnake Eyes The new animation comes from a game. The remade opening is also a feature in the blu-ray box set. They didn't reanimate the entire series.
There are areas where the new version did touched up on, but mostly on the effects (realistic area on the staroff, TOP GUN intro, more smokes and bokeh effect) but other than that the CGI simply just sucks. But isnt that kinda Japanese thing all these years? their CGI on movies or anime, it looks super B or C list movies. Just take terra formars and Attack on Titans... the CGI is just *facepalmed*

Amen, brother. Computer animation can be done right but it's got a LONG way to go before it hits that level of artistry and depth.
