Chris Corner has the type of voice i could listen too for hours and not get overwhelmed its more like soothing and he knows how to program his music so it peaks at just the right moment... PURE GENIUS.

He has no shame in sharing what consumes or haunts his mind either- it's such a cliché to admit, I feel as if he's the one and only writer in existence that gets "me". I love him for that. To me, this song has a beautiful message. It may not be what it's about but it's okay. It seems to be about the war between the sexes and how tortured the situation between men and women is now. We're on a different frequency, we're lost and alone. We're separate, but lost without each other. The past is weakness, don't look to the past, look to the future, because people need love or else people would never play the game.
In a literal sense it means to do something that you find fun or to play something like chess or football. In the artistic sense, "play the game" can be (as you said) interpenetrated in many ways. In the context of this song, I believe its a play on words, you are playing a game, but you might not enjoy the game or maybe the game ends really badly. This could be interpenetrated as; living life, having sex, starting relationships, maintaining relationships and many more. Ultimately, it is up to the individual what the artist means by "play the game".
