  • “And Nephilim - we tend to love very overwhelmingly. To fall in love only once, to die of grief over love - my old tutor used to say that the hearts of the Nephilim were like hearts of angels: They felt every human pain, and never healed.”
    - City of Heavenly Fire
Alternate Universe where Magnus comes back too soon from Catarina’s place after having brought Madzie there, and goes looking for Alec.
So, when Jace accidentally activates the Soul Sword and Valentine uses it to commit mass murder, he is hit by the shockwaves that ripple throughout the Institute.
Alec is the one to find and try to revive him, while Isabelle calls Catarina for help.
Sadly, their efforts prove unsuccessful, and Magnus quietly slips away shortly after, with Alec by his side.

The last time they’d seen each other, Alec had been hurt, angry, and hard on Magnus; accusing him of having kept things from him that put his family at risk.
From Clary, however, he learns that, as far as Magnus was concerned, none of that seemed to matter to him. Instead, she tells him about how powerless Magnus had felt while they were asked to wait on the sidelines to ensure the Downworld’s safety, and about Magnus’ own admission that he didn’t care what happened to him - so long as they found Alec and he was okay.
Alec also realizes that Magnus died before he ever had the chance to tell him that he loved him, and how much he truly meant to him.
Over the next few days, Jace finds himself experiencing Alec’s despair, guilt, anguish, and overwhelming grief through their shared bond…
… until he can sense that Alec’s life force is slowly fading, and that he must get to him before it’s too late.
The legends, once again, prove themselves to be true…
The hearts of some Nephilim are known to love very overwhelmingly - to fall in love only once, and to die of grief over love...
And it would seem that Alec, sadly, has been gifted with such a heart…
Stress cardiomyopathy (a.k.a. “broken heart syndrome”) - a medical condition that is a fairly rare and seldom life-threatening among mundanes - tends to affect Shadowhunters more severely, and at a higher rate.
This time, there is no demon for Jace to kill, no fight to win, no monster he could protect Alec from…
The only thing he can do is comfort his parabatai, and stay with Alec until the very end.

      Thank you... 🤗💕
I recently came across that quote from the book - about nephilim having a tendency to love very overwhelmingly, to the point of going as far as dying of grief...
And I couldn't help but wonder if, perhaps, one of the reasons why Alec had been on the defensive with Magnus at first - accusing him of "flirting, laughing, and using magic" while treating love as a game without risking anything - was because he was fully aware of his own tendency to forge very deep and strong attachments with those he loves.
Izzy and Jace, especially... Alec doesn't handle the prospect of losing them or being unable to keep them safe very well, and has been rather vocal about how he perceives them as a rather vital part of his life.
The look Isabelle gave Alec after he told her that Jace needed him, and he simply couldn't live without him, was enough to convince her to let him risk his life to reach out to him.
Somehow, I think she knew that if she didn't let him try, and something happened to Jace, Alec would never have been able to handle that loss while wondering if he could have saved him had he tried the suicidally dangerous ritual instead.
So, while Magnus initially sought to connect with him - talking about love as if it was simple and easy to follow one's heart when you felt so emotionally drawn to them...
Alec was likely terrified of his growing romantic interest for him, as well as the implications behind it.
Magnus was an immortal warlock and a bit of an open flirt with a reputation for not shying away from life's many pleasures.
While Alec was a nephilim with a tendency to emotionally keep most people at bay since he does become utterly devoted - heart and soul - to the very few he lets in.
Taking into consideration the idea that some nephilim may fall in love only once in their lifetime, to the point where the loss of that love might be something they never recover from, I could see how Alec might tell Magnus that he has no idea what he feels about him, and angrily throw those insecurities in his face while being upset over the way Magnus keeps pursuing and confusing him.
It's an awfully big responsibility and amount of pressure to put upon anyone, too.
Might also explain why Alec angrily lashed out at Magnus telling him "after everything I've done for you!" at some point.
Because, from Alec's P.O.V., the choice he made was to love Magnus with all he has to give for the rest of his life.
Meaning he's essentially saying "I just gave you my life, why can't you just do this one thing?" at that moment.
While Magnus is confused and hurt by that reaction, because it seems that Alec's instincts to trust in Magnus' ability to be able to handle and even match that type of love and devotion towards him paid off.
And, in such context, Magnus is right - Alec made that choice ultimately for himself, not for Magnus.
But, at least initially and from Alec's own P.O.V., it would make sense for Alec to believe that he took a greater risk that might end up costing him more than Magnus, and lash out in frustration at him for seemingly refusing to help him reach his parabatai.
So, that's sort of what I tried to convey with the flashbacks...
The way that Magnus initially kept trying to reach out to him, while Alec was both highly receptive towards his advances and far from oblivious to that growing connection between them; but also trying to protect his own heart by remaining focused on his duties as a shadowhunter, and making the "safe" choices.
With the interrupted wedding being the turning point where Alec eventually more or less "sealed his fate" by allowing himself to have faith in them both and follow his heart - regardless of what it might cost him.
That shocked "what did I just do?" where he realizes there's no turning back now, and he's either set himself up for happiness (should Magnus be able to handle being loved rather overwhelmingly by a nephilim) or heartbreak (should Magnus be looking for something more fleeting, after all).
But hey, "too much" is Magnus' middle name, so... 😆
I also found it interesting to make a bit of a parallel between the wedding - where Alec is starting to suffocate at the thought of spending the rest of his life without Magnus, and Lydia is trying to reassure him that it's going to be okay while being supportive of his choice, even if that means having to let him and the projects they'd made together go...
And then, have Jace in the "present time", able to sense that Alec's life is slipping away - that his heart is giving up on him and he's having trouble breathing - so he's trying to reassure him that it's going to be alright... To have him comfort Alec while doing the best he can to let him go (at that point, I think Jace's more pleading with Alec to let the pain stop, rather than begging him stay), despite how much losing Alec is personally hurting him, too...
I also sort of found myself imagining that, since Magnus had been frantically searching for Alexander when the Soul Sword was activated and used by Valentine - having never had the chance to properly reconcile with him - his own soul remained somewhat restless, having sort of gotten stuck in some kind of limbo after he died, where he just kept looking for Alec until he finally found him and they'd be able to move on together...
So here! Have yet some more Malec feels you never asked for! 😆
