Hands down the best how to I've seen. The manufacturers often try to make brief overview how tos, but those of us nervous about putting something we just spent $$$ in a dryer, we need a little more explanation. Thanks for this, and the bonus pupper too! -Dandelion
@@FrozensAdventures we were in quarantine once we got back from Latvia, where I did several. I've been putting plenty of miles on the feet, but mostly city miles right now while we are still in Ukraine. I did see a video where a lady was putting her quilt in the dryer , for some reason she became stuck and had to be rescued by her stepson and his friend. Always use the cool setting.
How karmic this content is. I just ordered a new Enlightened Equipment down quilt/sleeping bag convert, and it's customized. I have never washed a down quilt. Thanks for the perfect info at the perfect time.
What might save your hands is a "breathing mobile washer" or some people call them a "washing wand" they are hard plastic though and may not be delicate enough. Another softer and cheaper option might be an old fashioned rubber plunger. You can drill holes in it to allow the water to flow through the plunger.
Fantastic how to vid! I’m dreading doing this though. Quilts are so expensive and I worry that I’ll do it wrong! Love you little doggie who stole the show and the outtake at the end was funny. Keep up the good work Frozen. ATB - Julia (UK)
Hahaha sooooo! I should have shown the shower curtain . It's a unicorn smoking a cigar riding a t rex lol. We got it for the kids but didn't know the unicorn was smoking a. Big ole stoagie
THANK YOU FOR SHOWING HOW TO CLEAN & FLUFF THE DOWN FEATHERS IN YOUR / OUR SLEEPING BAG 🎒 ! GLAD TO SEE YOU'RE DOING WELL ! HOPE YOU BOTH & THE PUP HAVE A GREAT MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅 🎄 & HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO 🎉 BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
Yesterday was my late beagle's birthday so seeing your fur baby made me so happy! This was also a super helpful video because I have a down jacket that needs a good wash, so I've now got something to do after finals! Thank you!
What about putting your quilt/sleeping bag on the spin cycle of your washer to remove as much water as possible after washing? What damage might be done?
Makes me want to stay with synthetic 😬 but I’m not a thru-hiker yet so I guess it’s easier spending hours washing a down bag rather than carrying a heavier bulkier synthetic bag (needing a larger heavier pack) for 12hrs day after day Thanks for the lesson though 👍🏻
It's a pain but if you take care of it, down will last a long time. I'd say you wash quilts every 5 years or so or 1 thru hike. This quilt was good for 3 years + a thru hike.
Looks like you have a fancy washer and dryer don't you think that would of worked, I don't have a tub in my house so I used my fancy washer and dryer , then air dried for a bit then pulled the clumps
My quilt’s care instructions recommend putting it in a laundry bag and washing in a front loading washer on delicate setting with extra rinse. Read the instructions and do what they say, and you should be fine. Though hand washing will never hurt.
So I already washed mine in the washer and let it air dry . . . definitely lots of clumps . . . do you think I could "fix it" by popping it in the dryer with the tennis balls?
For sure it would start to break up the clumps. Expect to leave it in there on air dry (no heat) for a few hours still. Then lick the rest apart and put it back in. Should be fine.
What about synthetic bags. The one I used on the AT was a Mountain Hardwear UltraLamina. It has almost no loft any more. I tried running it thru the washer gently and then drying on low heat and no luck. Any suggestions?
Hi, Bill - To wash a synthetic bag, you can use Nikwax Tech Wash as opposed to Down Wash. It is created specifically for synthetic materials. Just remeber to always follow the instructions on the care label provided by the manufacturer.
The history of backpacking? It all started 40,000 years ago with the first successful hunt when the wives weren’t willing to move camp to the dead mastodon. Unfortunately, the hunters had to make shoulder-slung bags to bring to fresh cuts of meat back to camp in about 28 trips. You’re welcome.
Was on a terrible trip once wherein the person I was with had a down bag I stopped breathing mid night luckily we were at the trail head still because we got there at sundown...

Your fur baby stole the show🤣 Great how-to video, seriously. Now I’m afraid to go smell my quilt.
I'm still voting for you two to get together for an overnighter to share trail stories on camera. Meet in the middle like Allegheny Natl. Forest.
Thank you!! That was the best one I've seen of these.
Best video I've ever seen on the topic. Excellent. Ha! Love the outtake too.
Another good reason to use a liner and wash it at every inn or hostel. Nice video!

I've been putting off washing some stuff before I sell it, but you've inspired me to get off my ass, thanks :)

You're most welcome
Frozen, a bit shocked that the initial wash water turned out cleaner than I would have imagined. Great tip on closing off the baffles.
Always nice to start the season with a clean, lofty quilt! And is that your Disney Princess camp towel in the shower? 🤣

Nice video. The tying off trick is very helpful to know!
Was wondering how to do this correctly... thanks man
Great tutorial, brother! This was great.
Your doggo is awesome, too.
Great video and not sure if this was the point but you 've convinced me to buy anything but a down quilt. Lol
Would the quilt need washing if it is only used hanging under your hammock? It not like you are sleeping in it.
Great video by the way.
I don't think underquilts need washing much.
Hi. Thank you for the tutorial. I have not a dryer, can i dry without it? Just in the summer?
It will take a long time but I don't see why not. May want to visit a laundromat though.
About how many nights do you get between washings? Nice tutorial.
Another helpful video. Thank you
Wow got to be number 1 for a change interesting video
Congrats! lol!
What jacket are you wearing in the intro? Been looking for something like that
It's a melanzana microgrid hoodie. Hard to find though unless you are from leadville colorado.
When did you take the lines off the ends of the quilt? I think you did it when you put it in the dryer?
Took them off completely after drying.
Wow....do you do windows too? Love your beagle. Hope you and your family have a safe and happy holiday season.
What about putting your quilt/sleeping bag on the spin cycle of your washer to remove as much water as possible after washing? What damage might be done?
Thanks so much for making this video ,will refer back when I do mine , do u trust a cleaners to do it ?
Only myself. We all know what these quilts cost us. That's why I choose to wash them myself.
Gawd...I wish I would've known about tying off the HG quilt. My down shifted out if the body baffles and out towards the edges.
Look toward the end of the video. I talk about down migration.

Hi Jason great video yes I agree the time is very worth not having to buy a new quilt. Thanks for putting the info out there.
Wow !! That looks complicated. How about if I just never sweat or get them dirty? LOL
Modern problems require modern solutions.
Sleeping bag liners help
Can you not just take to a dry cleaners then?
I don't think so. There are some vendors online you can send your quilt to.
How do you proceed with the drying process if you don't have a dryer?
Laundromat?
Does getting extra oz of over fill help with down migration?
No it actually just makes the quilt warmer

What is that hoodie you have been wearing in all the videos?
Melanzana microgrid. Quite impossible to get though.
@@FrozensAdventures I was afraid of that. I have heard. Thanks
Thank you for this tutorial but now I think I'll ship mine off to professionals.
Don't take it to a dry cleaners(!)

Unfortunately synthetic bags just lose their loft the more they are compressed. Not sure what you can do with those.
You might want to check with Outdoor Vitals. They do a synthetic jacket and possibly a bag or quilt. Maybe they could provide some washing tips.

@@NikwaxNorthAmerica thanks for the info!
Don’t burn your quilt too close to a bright hot lamp.
How about dry cleaning?
Not Frozen, but they say to NEVER dry clean down products. Chemicals mess up the oils in down.
Not recommended at all unfortunately.
What did you do in that quilt that is smells THAT bad? lol
I thru hiked the appalachian trail

Buy cheap stuff and toss it.
Or good gear and maintain it?
