In this video essay we look at Brian De Palma's Carrie, the ground-breaking horror film from 1976, starring Sissy Spacek. In the second of our New Hollywood Series, we discuss how De Palma combines the suspense techniques of Alfred Hitchcock (Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo) with the self awareness of directors like Jean-Luc Godard (Breathless, Contempt).

We can all agree Brian De Palma is the greatest, right?
I was recently on my co-writer, Manuela Lazic's podcast discussing BODY DOUBLE - ruclips.net/video/5OM6fxo9cYI/видео.html
@@TheDiscardedImage will check it out. Love that movie. It's like De Palma is mocking both Hitchcock and himself.
You had a shot from Scorsese’s Taxi Driver. Wonder what your thoughts are about it.
How did you get so good at dissecting films and analyzing them?
One of the cinematic goats
I am always amazed at how directors are able to work with multiple themes like this.
I just watched this Gem last night for the first time... & Sissy Specek has made me fall in love with the character, what a performance, what a great movie
I definitely need to check out more of De Palma's work.
Love De Palma's movies, specially from the 70's and early 80's. Carrie is one of my favorite movies. Great essay.
Hope this series is going to continue, it’s absolutely brilliant
Never saw Carrie form that point of view... Great analysis, Thanx!!!
The discarded image is the platonic ideal of youtube. Such stunning work every freaking time. Instead we get cats farting with millions of views. It's not just. It's not fair. I do feel like each episode is dropped specifically with me in mind though.
just a quick note! when we have our periods the blood does not go down like that that is way too much blood , it starts with little speck! but it would never slide down the leg like that,
This was such a good and sad movie at the same time. BTW, your accent is delightful!
I never really knew anything about Carrie, but I got the sense I would like it somehow. This definitely seems like a great movie. I am also not into horror at all.
if you're not into horror then Carrie might be a good film for you - despite it falling into the horror category i didn't find it scary at all but more of a teen fairy-tale gone wrong. Sissy Spacek's performance is definitely worth checking out, she should have won the Oscar.
Awesome and unique commentary!
I’m always floored by your videos Julian. I wish I could analyze films as well as you can
Nice video! Will you also cover Hal Ashby at some point?
Quite possibly. Shampoo is probably my favourite
Keen to see the next one
You have to give De Palma credit for giving depth to the source material.
the novel had far more depth.
you have to give Alfred Hitchcock more credit since De Palma 'borrows' endlessly from Hitchcock
Brilliant!
What are the next films being discussed in this series?
We haven't ironed that all out yet. It's tough narrowing them down as there's so many great ones. Even when you select a director, say like Robert Altman, it's tough to choose whether to do MASH or McCabe, or The Long Goodbye, or Nashville, or Three Women!
@@TheDiscardedImage I think doing Chinatown, MASH, Bonnie and Clyde, Jaws, All The President's Men, and Star Wars would be my next reccomended ones
@@TheDiscardedImage Please, also consider Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show. It's one of my all time favorite films, and there are no video essays about it.
It's definitely one I'm considering. Love Bogdanovich.
@@TheDiscardedImage I haven't seen LPS, but I might watch it because Cloris Leachman (who I love from Young Frankenstein) is in it
Song when she starts doing evil ESP stuff?
Tribute to the algorithm
👍
Very poggers

I love your stuff, but somebody who has a parial hearing disability the background music is jarring and I stopped watching. Would you consider turning it down for future videos so us semi-deaf people can enjoy your content too?
Missed this comment originally. I actually thought as much myself on this video, and brought the music levels down on all the videos since. Hope it makes a difference.
@@TheDiscardedImage That is so kind of you, much appreciated!!!
Disgusting and loud background music. Ruins the video
