Dot indicates half sound.. Like in hindi how you write chakkar, sannata, pallak etc... In tamil you have to just place a (.) dot above the letter, that's all

Those who hold that Malayalam was an independent language clearly didn't try to study Tamil. In the written ( ke, kē, ko, kou, zha, etc.) and spoken language( kii for hand) even I see many similarities. They must've split from old tamil.

Tamil has only 18consonants..so names and sounds which are foreign to the tamil have to be written using these consonants only..this doesn't leads to mild to heavy deviation from original pronunciation of the name or the word...but you also get a tamilified version of the name in doing so...like the खुशी (Khushi) in Hindi is written (குஷி/குஷி) in Tamil and pronounced as Kushi ..similarly सीता (sita) becomes சிதா (seetha).. भीम (भीम) becomes பிம் written as peem but can be pronounced beem but not bheem..
