“One of our first sponsored riders was an up-and-coming teenager named Brian Deegan.a In 1997, we entered him in the AMA Supercross Championships at the L.A. Coliseum. It was only our team’s second major race, but in front of forty-six thousand stunned spectators Brian took first fucking place. As he flew over the final jump to cross the finish line, he let go of his bike and let it sail through the air, and he made motocross history. The crowd went apeshit. It was as if the Bad News Bears had just beaten the New York Yankees. No one could believe an independent team of obnoxious punks had beaten the multibillion-dollar Japanese corporate machine. One of the astonished announcers on ESPN wondered aloud, “Can you win a race and not be on the bike at the finish line?” His fellow announcer answered, “Well . . . he just did!” The AMA awarded Brian a $2,500 purse for his victory and then fined him $1,000 for his “hazardous” ghost ride. It didn’t matter: Brian’s career took off and Moto XXX couldn’t be ignored after that. The videos kept selling, the victories piled up, and Moto XXX became infamous in the motocross scene (and an ever-growing thorn in the AMA’s side)." From NOFX, The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories
I had never heard of Deegan until today. Brian and his family built a home here in NC that is close to mine. I have not had the success with my career that Brian has but I worked with Nascar teams in the '90s and early 2000 years, not as a driver but as a mechanic (engine builder). You don't hear stories like this one in Nascar any more. If a team doesn't have a couple of million to invest, they won't make it in Nascar. The engines we would build in the '90s cost around 60K, which was a LOT of money back then. Congrats to you Brian! I love to see people like you make it in today's world. Next time you're in NC look me up. Don't be a stranger. lol
I was on tour and we had three days off till the next show. They gave us out passes and a grand box seat...but I headed for the nearest trackside viewing point. I asked some guy if he wanted an "upgrade and told him there was a bar and buffet in the box...handed him my pass and watched the ghost send from less than 50 ft. Away. Great time to be alive. FMX riders at this race Brian Deegan (1st), Tommy "Tomcat" Clowers (16th) and Edgar "E.T." Torronteras (17th). _[shaking head no]_ 1997 was the year in which Jeremy McGrath left Factory team Honda, signed with Suzuki of Troy (making him technically a privateer) & made deals for all his other equipment; Fox Racing, Alpinestars (boots), Bell Helmets, Spy goggles, Dunlop Tires, etc... and 1997 was a fucking *DISASTER* for McGrath, he also ran Answer Pro Taper handlebars, and he went back to Renthal by the next year... To watch his son win in the same venue 26 yrs later is pretty cool.
Saw that live in 1997! My hero!! We all jumped out of our seats, high fiving and cheering! Been a Deegan fan ever since!
