Amidst the grassland and bamboo forest of the Virunga mountains, at the foot of the Sabyinyo Volcano, the endangered mountain gorillas that have lived there for over a century now. With a little over a 1060 individuals, the silverback gorillas remain elusive and cautious of human interaction. However, the Volcanoes National Park researchers and trackers have become masters in tracking the primates for those adventurers who want to get a glimpse of them.
More important than anything else is how one must behave when approaching the gorillas. The master trackers demonstrate, in an artful performance, what you must do to obtain the trust of the gorillas but also how to remain aware at all times. They are, afterall, wild animals still.
In this documentary video that we filmed during our stay at the One&Only Gorilla’s Nest which is just 15 minutes from the mountains, we follow Ivan and Rouslan Lartisien, co-founders of Lartisien., as they make their way through the Rwandan rainforest of Virunga, with the guidance and help of the master trackers to meet the mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Stay tuned for our new video coming out soon about the One&Only Gorilla’s Nest, which is at the heart of the Volcanoes National Park and is the prime destination for observing the famous mountain gorillas!

When I was swimming with Dolphins for the first time some years ago, it was a once in a lifetime experience. These animals are so clever, extremely strong and funny, I really loved it to be pushed through the water by them:-)) In Mauritius, I was walking with lions which was also an amazing experience, they were so calm and friendly, we could even pet them. I love animals, the bigger, the better and can't get enough of them. But coming face to face with the gorillas must be something very very special and I would love to make this experience one day. And staying in the One & Only Gorilla's Nest would make this truly unique. Maybe some day..... And I really hope there will be more such videos!

      Dear Susanne,
As always, it's a pleasure to hear you from you and learn about your travel stories. We have to say, encounters with dolphins and lions are great, but coming face to face with mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, it was something surreal, even for us.
If you'd like more information, you can contact us at gem@grandluxuryhotels.com so we can help you make this dream a reality. We are so sure you'll absolutely love the One&Only Gorilla's Nest, or even something closer to Vienna until the travel situation improves! 😉
