  • Canadian premiers called for a “meaningful” dialogue with the Trudeau government on the pause on carbon pricing for home heating oil, after a meeting of provincial and territorial leaders in Halifax, N.S.
    Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston, chair of the latest Council of the Federation meeting, said he is “sympathetic to the discussions” around the carbon pricing pause on home heating oil, and also said he believed the Trudeau government should do away with carbon pricing.
    “I would ask that the federal government address those concerns in a meaningful way that’s fair, but ultimately I think they should just get rid of the carbon tax and work with the provinces on something that would actually help to preserve our planet,” he said, adding he doesn’t think carbon pricing is “effective.”
    Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe said Monday the premiers’ complaint isn’t with the program to switch Canadians from home heating oil to heat pumps but that it is unfair to those who heat their homes in different ways but still struggle with rising costs.
    Meanwhile, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she didn’t believe heat pumps were a viable solution in her province as they “don’t work particularly well at below -25 degrees.”
    The premiers also addressed Canada’s beleaguered health-care system and the lack of affordable housing.

    Anyone find it bizarre how we're all struggling to pay for heat when our country is so resource-rich?

    • @yvanhuberdeau2801

      Because they make more money selling it to the states and abroad and we pay through the nose. We should be the richest country in the world but we have the highest debt per household in the G7 countries. Thanks to the corrupt spending and money printing by the Liberals. They spent 1 billion dollars since 2019. Where’s the money?

    Wow, not a 1st ministers meeting since 2018 - that's on the Prime Minister. I know he likes to travel, but he could have at least invited them to Ottawa, so his foreign jaunts would not be compromised. I'm dissappointed that this opportunity was not acted upon. I've been dissappointed for a number of years, it seems to be style over substance. A low key affair with the premier's, but a good start. Sorry Doug Ford, but you working "collaboratively" with the municipalities, Ontario has not seen that thus far. Why no translation service ? The Quebec rep is 100% correct, it's an insult and unacceptable at this level.

    It’s odd that none of them talk about the carbon tax rebate cheques being given to individual Canadians every quarter. Or how the carbon tax has made coal too expensive and that this has resulted in rapid closures of coal plants in Alberta, replacing them with lower emission solutions.

    • @whiskybrush3219
      @whiskybrush3219 10 месяцев назад +1

      Lower emissions like LNG? Or the lower emissions that were encouraged by the federal government in the early 2000's to convert wood burning fixtures with natural gas one because of the dramatically lower polluants achieved with LNG? The same natural gas we are now being punished for using?

    • @josephsmith594
      @josephsmith594 10 месяцев назад

      @@whiskybrush3219 The carbon tax is actually more impactful to large emitters than individual homeowners, that’s why you and I get a rebate check every quarter, your so-called “punishment” is balanced by the money you’re getting. The way it has reduced emissions is by making it more expensive to generate electricity from coal than from natural gas. In Alberta this accelerated the transition from coal to natural gas generation, with many coal plants closing in 2023, seven years earlier than planned. The carbon tax made coal generation unprofitable.

    Canada is broken… it makes no sense any more… the only benefit to being in Canada was access to the largest trading network at the time the British Empire. We don’t even trade province to province we all trade more with America then ourselves. The only reason to stay is if you are getting a hand out. Quebec will always rule Canada as they now can’t loose seats in the house as their population shrinks and no political party will ever say no to Quebec or it’s political suicide via seat count. We are essentially governed by a foreign country given Quebec is a nation and they haven’t even signed our constitution.

    Im from Ontario, born 2004. Is it okay if I don't like Quebec - like I didn't understand a single thing that guy said. Not Quebecs fault, I think the people who teach french in english provinces are super lazy and know they probably won't get fired. I would have been completely fine if he had just finished what he said in french and the centre of attention just moved on. But of course I have to hear once again that Canada is a bilingual country. Usually I would just read up on Quebecs stance through some article, but this guy proves to you that he can speak english easily if he wants to, but chooses not to. It's always the Quebecer's talking about bilingualism but yet they can't reciprocate. It's a common theme in French history too separated from French-Canadian history.

      Saskatchewan will “illegally” stop collecting carbon tax on Jan. 1. They can do it because SasEnergy is a Crown corporation owned by Saskatchewan government, but Alberta’s electricity is provided by private-own companies so our premier would not encourage private companies to violate federal law. Our political system effectively permits a minority to dictate to the majority. A majority of Canadians, as evidenced by every election statistic publicly available on the governments own websites, did not vote Liberal, do not agree with the carbon price, and would prefer if they weren’t being imposed on by the Liberals, whom they did not vote for and do not support. Particularly because these impositions have direct, immediate, and even drastic consequences on your ability to provide for your family. You don’t address climate change through punitive tax measures that merely increase costs and decrease quality of life for your citizens. You address climate change through education, technology, and innovation. Cut wasteful spending in other areas, which there are ample, and use that to fund innovation. We don’t need a carbon tax. We are suffering and this government which formed a back-door coalition government which neither of their constituents voted on at the time of election are causing hardship for all of us who didn’t even vote for this, which is a majority.

    As a RN who no longer works as one the number one reason I left was being constantly verbally abused and having no ability to put an end to it. AHS puts up signs saying that abuse towards staff will not be tolerated but they do absolutely nothing about it. IMO if you are verbally abusive (and/or physically abusive which happens more than you would think) to staff and you are not at risk of imminent death then any staff member should be able to discharge you immediately. This is the reason most nurses burnout and leave the profession.

      Also, we need to actually get them in. I know someone training in Ireland because there’s no room in the schools now 🤦🏻‍♀️ we have NO spots available. Also, many careers are too $. To be a piolet costs 100k to train (just the schooling). I know someone who wanted to be a vet but it was too much money.

    Love how the premier of Quebec leaves the table, very class act, but to the issues discussed, the Premiers are right, one size does not fit everyone. When you force fuel taxes on people that have no choice but to buy the fuel for necessary transport to and from work and there is no viable option for them it is a forced tax that is a basic punishment for living where you do. The Federal government thinks everyone has access to public transit or is rich enough to buy a hybrid or EV. At least the majority of the Premiers have some common sense and realize there needs to be a more sophisticated answer to carbon emissions - not just a tax. The vote today in parliament on the carbon tax is proof that Liberal MP's do not vote for their constituents - they just vote the way Trudeau tells them too.

    How is the Federal Government going to tax us on the wood we burn to heat our homes here on South Vancouver Island ? We harvest the wood from our own properties. Burning wood produces carbon emissions, maybe more than Natural Gas. I guess if you purchase wood by the cord, the Federal Government could try to have the supplier collect the Carbon Tax for them.

      Wood is massively worse than natural gas. The carbon offset is not only immense but the particulate matter released is much worse. But that's what you get when you hurt people to this extent. They start harvesting their environment.

    According to 2022 Adult Literacy Report : Literacy is more than the ability to read and write. It’s the ability to
    understand and use a wide range of materials to engage fully in activities
    and opportunities at home, at work, and in the community. Literacy
    enables people to meet their goals and succeed in today’s world.
    According to Statistics Canada, 49% of the adult population scored below high-school literacy
    levels; 17% scored in the lowest level. [1] Newcomer, Indigenous, and low-income populations
    are disproportionately challenged by low literacy. These groups have also been more
    impacted by the learning, employment, and financial crises that resulted from the pandemic. THIS IS an ANSWER for CANADIAN GOVERNMENT performance and why CANADA become BANANA REPUBLIC !!!!

    We had a much better healthcare system in the 1960’s , 70’s by far , than we do now. We need to rethink why healthcare was much better, in the past..

    People need to realize , not one of these premiers talk about solid property rights being protected in Canada., we need a charter of rights, that means something , for the people of Canada, not just for government control, which is never addressed, why???? There are so many, many problems besides the carbon tax, like heating by itself, being far to expensive in our resource rich country.
    This seems like more of a distraction from everything else that needs to be addressed in this country. We haven’t evolved with natural climate change. Not enough explanation on heat pumps, this its just word salad.

      In my opinion, they should have had translators provided. It looked rather rude that they missed on this opportunity. Btw, if you notice, each premier has their province written in both English and French in front of them, as it should. Btw, we are still an official bilingual country and many French Canadians live outside of Quebec.

    They all think $20 a month will change people's lives? Then they drive their SUVs to the burger joint a couple blocks over to get those two extra cheeseburgers a month. I saw a few minutes of the live feed from the House of Commons vote on this, it was so annoying with the MPs acting like a bunch of 5 year olds that I couldn't take more than that. You pay people $200K a year and that's what they do, yell and thump their hands on the thing in front of them. The Speaker tells them to shut tf up and they immediately do it again. All they gotta do is start fining them for making noise, $1000 a pop, see how much noise the vastly overpaid children make then. But no, that would be too logical, better to just waste as much time as possible making horrendous noise so they don't have to actually do anything productive, because that would be crazy. What a joke we have for a Parliament.
