On the American Idiot album, this song is labeled Jesus of Suburbia, but there are sublistings for what each part of the song is called... I. "Jesus of Suburbia" II. "City of the Damned" III. "I Don't Care" IV. "Dearly Beloved" V. "Tales of Another Broken Home" All five parts make up Jesus of Suburbia as a whole. Fun fact: Jesus of Suburbia is named Jimmy and Jimmy is the focal point to the entire American Idiot album. He even has his own song called St. Jimmy.
I do love me some extra Green Day! I was lucky enough to be on my first trip to NYC our concierge got us tickets to American Idiot on Broadway on a night when Billie Joe Armstrong playing St. Jimmy. It was fantastic!!!
This song is 5 songs in one, when you learn it on guitar you learn one song at a time and then once you have mastered them all you just put them together. Not a hard song to play but not easy to remember all the changes. It does take a few jams to get it nailed.
This song is the most representative, especially the entire 11 minute video, of what it meant to be a teenager from about 2002 to 2008 (like being in high school and like lower middle class post 9/11). There is nothing that speaks to that exact group's like, cultural and social experience like this song, and it doesnt get the recognition it truly deserves for that. Also - saying it reminded you bohemian rhapsody is one of the biggest compliments possible, they would very much appreciate it, and definitely became that for my generation with this album. People love American idiot because it rocked, and that's great, but often miss the true value because people dont respect this kind of music (even though this is insanely genre breaking)
You might have nailed it there. Our generation grew up being fed the same "the world is beautiful and you'll go far if you work for it, God loves you and life is good" Christianity has been preaching for hundreds of years but I don't think anyone really appreciates how early that mask was ripped out for our generation. Insane how I managed to grow up in a small town nearby a metropolis in Brazil and still _so much_ of what this song nails about the depressing nature of life in a failing midwest USA town still rings true to my experience. Growing up hearing about the greatness of life while trying to keep in your mind the clear layout of which areas of town you shouldn't go into because they were most likely to suddenly come alive in gunfights between the police and drug gangs, getting your truth from TV and your fiction from the optimism in school... This song captures so much of that
@@mordirit8727 i got chills reading about your experience. we really got hit hard by expansion of the internet too, because we were so much more connected to everyone and everything than anyone else alive EVER, so we had no one to understand that but ourselves - in a different way than the whole "parents just dont understand" thing, like a real, world-altering difference in the way our gen witnessed and experienced REALITY. and because of that, we saw everything that was swept under the rug forever, but obviously had no way to deal with it. no one talked about abuse, harassment, racism, assault, inequality, poverty fucking ANYTHING, because it got hidden to keep us 'hopeful' or used as a news story... and then they gave us the internet. and WE told OUR stories, and suddenly we knew this shit isnt happening to people, isn't happening to just me, its happening to US. and then 20 year olds had to fix the fucking world despite having no help, no trust, no faith and STILL RECOVERING (poorly lol) from having our eyes peeled open to the lovecraftian fucking monster that was the way our parents ran society and raised us (not even blaming them, just how it was for them mostly, honestly feel bad for THEM nowadays), and we were fucking PISSED about it (rightfully freaking so Id say). and this album, this song, this video, is a really fucking great representation of the baby steps of that whole process, lol. Hehe, sorry i ranted, i think youre really cool.
I was too young to have really experienced how life changed after 9/11. I'm currently 23. But yes this album is a masterpiece and is one of the most influential rock albums in modern history. for a while a lot of people didn't take them seriously, but I feel like that's starting to change, and this music is being looked at in a different light. It's a timestamp of the 2000s
It's about being a teen. And experiencing new things but the pain shines though no matter what you try so you run from your past. It's my song and out of 2000 rock songs this came in number 200 and their highest placed song.
my favorite song by far from green day. been my favorite band since i was in the 4th grade. i am now 29 and my stance on them is very much the same. this made me sad with all the memories. everywhere i went as far as partying or being with friends i always had a green day song play that day or my friends remind me of what songs from greenday they would hear that reminded them of me. so many memories. so odd once being 19 getting fucked up and obsessing with this band. to now have a daughter and almost being 30. my partying is done but the memories and the connection green day will always have with my heart is priceless. great video
Listen to the whole album. Listen to the words. The lyrics. It’s a deep fuckin story. It’s a great story. It’s sad. It’s immersive. It’s probably my favorite album of all time.
When this album came out, they did a lot of interviews. They flat out said that Jesus of Suburbia was meant to be their Bohemian Rhapsody. So, you called it.
at 32 years old, im not ashamed to say i think this song is my generation's bohemian rhapsody. its not a coincidence you noticed similarities. in my opinion thats part of what makes it such a great song
Truly, the entire album is a masterpiece of punk rock, and should be listened to in it's entirety, as it each song leads in to the next. Green Day is an amazing band that's been around for awhile now, and still just as good and relevant. Also, the music video to this is really good, too.
You should react to the video oh Queen, playing Bohemian Rhapsody, at a Green Day concert in Hyde Park. The crowd (60,000 I think) all singing Queen b4 the show
Best reaction I’ve heard from this song it seems like you got the jist for what this song is about.. I am a big fan of older Green Day and would like to suggest their song christy road
The lyrics in this are pretty timeless for teenagers I would think😅 can’t imagine a 15 year old not getting hyped after watching this lyric video. Good work Billie joe
100% music is supposed to be interpreted differently. I love how you thought of Queen because Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day Lead Singer) does give off Freddy Mucury (Queen lead singer) energy
Oh no you hit it right on the head that is absolutely very reminiscent of Bohemian Rhapsody on the way that it shifts they even made a Broadway rock opera based on it
Also Christie rd, dominated love slave, pulling teeth, coming clean, F.O.D., and I was there. Those are really good early songs. Oh I forgot one of my top 5 2000 light years away!!!
I remember watching this reaction when it was new, and came back to it now because there aren’t really any other good reactions to it, but it made me realize, 2 years later you still haven’t ever reacted to them again. I guess you just didn’t like them much, but its a shame because they have so many fantastic songs.
If you want to hear more Green Day, their older albums (Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod, Kerplunk, 39/Smooth, Warning, etc.) are some of the best rock albums in general, in my opinion.
I totally understand no watching the music video in a attempt to feel the song for what it is. But. At the same time, damn the video tells a story of us lost, angst, alt, teens. And I'm from the UK. I really urge you to watch it fully because it is a rarity in representation.
No hate for comparing this to queens bohemian rapsody. That’s what I usually compare long song that have ups and downs like this. I think they did a great job at capturing that different styles of vibes for that long without feeling out of place
It is very reminiscent of bohemian rhapsody. It's a different subject, if course, but the multiple tempo shifts all wrapped up in one song is definitely Queen-ish.
It is the bohemian rhapsody of pop punk for sure
Bro that song is more opera than punk
@@David-jz4yx Whats so opera about power chords? Love Green Day but this ain’t no opera my guy
@@drunkdrywaller7840bohemian rhapsody isn’t punk
@@David-jz4yx Never said it was. I said this specific song wasn’t an opera. Maybe a misunderstanding?
Exactly. This is to Green Day what "Bohemian Rhapsody" is to Queen. Or what "Welcome to the Black Parade" is to My Chemical Romance.
Queen isn’t a bad comparison at all. This song is basically Green Day’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
Worded perfectly
Billie Joe has said he wanted to make a song like Bohemian Rhapsody hence why the song is so long so you’re 100% correct!
you definitely need to listen to the whole album, it's a rock opera!
@Hau Min Thang A punk rock opera.
Yeah bad ass one
I rarely listen to individual tracks on it. All or nothing. What an experience.
no you’re right, they call this song the bohemian rhapsody of punk rock cuz of how long and how many switch ups happen
The ad at the end broke that last transition. It’s really good.
by far one of the worst places for there to be an ad lol so unexpected
i was like wtfff lolol

First time you hear Green Day really ought to be the entire Dookie album. It's one of the 5 best albums of the last 25 years.
The advert break near the end actually improved the song greatly
The album is a rock opera. The song holiday is the chapter after this song
Now that's what you call a rock opera. Keep up the good work
My favorite greenday song has got to be Letterbomb!! Lyrics are one of greenday's strengths
Same bro especially the last part always gets me emotional
I sub cuz of Green Day..
I love the way you just settle into the experience of the song, and let it take you on that emotional journey. Happy for you to discover this album.
This is my favorite Green Day song!! I love all the different parts to the song, it’s like 5 songs in one track!
When I want a good workout, I play bass to this song several times in a row - awesome!
I haven't heard this in years. Thank you I forgot how good this was. Definitely added to my playlist

Green Day's defining song for me. I can have this on repeat all day every day at work and never grow tired of it ❤😎🥳

You're right, Queen did Rock Opera. This is Rock Opera as well. Green Day's Bohemian Rhapsody.
An anthem for our generation for sure.

a song to remember, no one dare to this things nowdays.

It definetly is simmiliar to Bohemian Rhapsody as both songs do not feature choruses and are "through composed songs".
Queen is a very good comparison actually. If you see green day live, the way Billie Joe works the crowd will remind you a lot of Freddie Mercury.

no, you were right. it was theatrical, just like Queen
