Thankyou JIM, this was the one thing I put off for sometime. I was able to purchase one from a guy I conversed with Justin. And I was very glad he helped me out with the BIRD 43, and some starter elements. THANKYOU
I just heard your contact with Ducie Island. You sounded great here in Marysville. I got them a couple of days ago. Love these DX Peditions. Take care.
The Bird 43 has been on my wishlist for some time. I've heard nothing but good stuff about them, just waiting for the right auction ;) I look forward to your next video. 73 - W6RJW
Great video Jim and a topic that as of lately needed to be addressed...I hear all to often mic gains cranked way to high because of this very phenomenon 73 Jeff de WD8JM
It is really amazing so few understand the mic gain control and how to set it. Most do it wrong and you can hear the results. Like EA3JE who splatters over 20khz and guys tell him how good he sounds! 73, Jim
@@ham-radio it's even worse on 11 meters...as a truck driver I not only get over modulated garbage BUT all the noise toys that go with it they always "sound real good"...but also hear it on the bands as well...which seems odd since most rigs have an ALC meter ... don't they?? 73 Jeff de WD8JM
You're most welcome Jim. I post a lot of your instructional/informational videos on my FB page to share your knowledge with my friends. Keep up the good work. I can relate on the resolution issue. 73, WA6TWJ.
@@ham-radio Any chance in a future video you can discuss your thoughts on headphones? I notice you use an old set of RS Nova's. I am needing something with some noise cancelation to them because it is loud where I operate sometimes (QRM from the wife/kids). I am considering the expensive Pro7 but if those Nova's are that good maybe I would do that instead. Thanks.

Jim, I have GOT to have one of those three foot tall Bird meters. I know you have them because I see them in your video. Also, I like that LP-100A peak reading wattmeter. I see them for sale on the Internet. Always enjoy your videos - keep them coming. I hear you on 20M occasionally but you are always deep into QSO so I just listen and don't want to beak in. Hope to talk with you soon. BTW - have you seen my video on the 833A amplifier. I am having a lot of fun with it. Lastly, after 55 years of being on the air, I finally took my Extra exam, at a ham fest in Socorro, NM last week, and made that upgrade. 73 WA4QGA
I would like to talk with you about your favorite subject. The LP-100A is worth getting. N8LP is a very bright guy. I never built an 833 or 813. It would be a fun project and a challenge for 10 meters. Makes me wonder if you could go two 813-L1-C2 instead of 813-C1-L1-C2. I enjoy your videos. Fun to watch and learn. 73, Jim W6LG
@@ham-radio Jim, I hope we can catch each other on the air soon. My first high power amplifier was an 813 class-C and plate modulated for 10M around 1970 - grid driven, neutralized, etc. Nowadays, I would use the 813 in GG. Beautiful tubes and make a very nice looking amplifier. Probably make it monoband. In one of the older ARRL books there are plans for multiple amplifiers each monoband that I remember enjoying looking at as a kid. Now we can actually build it. If I can help in any way, let me know. Not exactly sure what you mean above about L1-C2 unless you are thinking we could leave the tuning capacitor off of the plate Pi network because of inter-electrode capacitance in the 813's?
Hi Jim, Excellent video. One correction, the full scale movement in the 43 model is 30 ua, not 50. I believe Bird does make other meters using a 50, 100, and 200 ua movements. 73 WB3BJU
Someone stole my 43 a few years back. Sadly, I lost my pelican case of “gold” (slug collection). I replaced it with a Telewave 44 because I was getting ready to retire and didn’t want to make the huge $$ investment in Bird slugs. The Telewave 44 has pretty much the same form factor as the Bird 43 BUT... it does most common frequency ranges and power ranges. (switch selectable vs. “slugs”) I really like it but not sure if it is as accurate as the Bird.. any thoughts? Thanks for another great video,!,
Thanks. I simply don't know. The 43 is the standard still. That has got to be some kind of record for a device. The method of sensing is old and not the smartest way to do that. But mid scale readings are right on the money. Thanks for you input. Keep in touch. 73, Jim
Hello Jim. Very good hearing from you today. Quick question- I have a Kenwood TS 140S, 100 watts, I always keep the mike gain at max., and observe the built in ALC and WATT meter as per instruction manual, have about 65 feet of RG 213 going into a homebrew 40 meter invert. dipole, and A 99 vertical dipole, 17 meters, no amp, no tuner ( when my club does something, I use a Shark 20 meter mobile whip on the mag mount on the pickup and works good), all antennas good SWR, always get good audio reports, should I be concerned? Thanks and I enjoy watching! Hope everything is well with you and yours, 73, KC3BXZ Joe
Keep in mind that the ALC meter should never go more than 1/3 to 1/2 scale. When it does, there is distortion and splatter. My meter shows zero ALC much of the time and no more than half once in a while. What others are telling you has little value because many don't know how to listen or won't comment. I hear guys check into nets with horrible distortion, artifacts, RF feedback room echo and no one says a thing. Many net control stations also sound terrible. They should be setting the example of a clean signal. Thanks & 73, Jim
Jim, I told you that I keep the mike gain at max. .. I meant to say, RF gain. The mike gain is just barely cracked open, most of the time. My mistake. It is hard to adjust because this radio doesn`t have a knob for these controls. They are sliding controls.. My goof.

Very informative. I thought the non peak meter would read 30 to 40 percent of the peak. I was surprised it read lower.
It depends on how heavily damped. Some. many, were 10% to 15%; Drake was the slowest. 73, Jim
