I was just mastering a track and needed to sidechain my vocals and never had used this EQ. Game changing! OMG, my vocals have never been so clear. All of my producer friends keep telling me I need to use Ableton, I tell tell them they need to use Studio One! Thanks for the vid.
Ha! I usually mix instrumental music but I'm doing some vocals and will try side-chaining too. Question: where do you prefer putting the EQ? On the instrument channel strip, a separate bus or on the master? I imagine all are possible. (?)
Just got to try this function today...had to put a new vocal on a previously mastered instrumental for a client... Used Splitter to get it in the M/S mode and put it up against Izotope Neutron's Unmasking feature. And I got better results with Pro EQ 3! Good Job Presonus 💪🤘
Super explanation and demo. You‘re an excellent teacher Gregor. Always thought sidechain EQ would be something too complex for me to comprehend, but I totally get it! 😊
I have 5 pro actually I wasnt thinking about upgrading to 6 but I checked all new features so I upgraded to 6. I like ProEQ because it is really transparent and doing nice job
Impressed with the attack & release behavior of the EQ's dynamic section. Not many artifacts, and no need to mess with additional controls. Well done Presonus!
Dynamic EQ is a perfect tool to clean up recordings (e.g. nasal sounding vocals at high levels) without altering the overall character. But sidechaining tops it all. I use this to carve out space from guitar-, synth- or piano-tracks to fit in the vocals. It's such a mighty thing. I never needed Trackspacer since Pro EQ3 was invented. Well done, Presonus!
In Studio one You can use any plugin in Mid-Side mode, just use the mixtool and the splitter. There is a video on the channel called "Mid-Side anything". Check it out!
@@alexeysmirnovguitar you can but there is not mid side within the eq itself, like pretty much any other pro eq in the world. the fact that you can mid side with external tools doesn't save it :/ even ableton now has mid side in eq8
It's also great for making distorted guitars leave space for the bass guitar. I used to aggressively cut everything below 100 Hz from the guitar tracks, which works great when guitar and bass are playing unisono, but once the guitar plays alone (in an interlude or something), it sounds pretty thin. With dynamic equalization, the guitar can be made thinner only when needed for the bass guitar to cut through.

Great tool! I've used it several times now and generally like the results. I wish I felt more confident about setting the frequency, Q, and threshold optimally. Is there any reference or advice available?
Hi, love your videos. I like to pick your brain. I have 2 questions. 1. How can I get studiolive 32s series 3, to work with pipleline XT. 2. How do I connect outboard gear to work with studiolive 32s Aux inputs. I tried to find answers but none of them are to clear. Thanks, George.
Gregor! Help. please… I’m so confused. Been a Pro Tools user for some years and swiched to Studio One a month ago. When I started out with PT I was a total beginner. Learned the basics within a few hours. So simple and easy workflow. And everything that I learned after that was intuitive and easy. But with SO everything is a challange. Please do a video ”Going From PT to SO”
I've got a question about this sidechaining & dynamics. Say you have a busy drumfill that consists of like 3 toms and some kicks in between them. Now with standard EQ, when hit separately, they sound ok. But when the fill is played everything becomes boomy and bassy. I wanted to introduce sidechaining in a way that all the toms and kick listen to each other so when one of them is played, the rest of their dynamic eqs lower the bass frequencies. In this way I would get a result as if the whole fill has been under, say 6db cut at 100hz. The issue is, I cannot get this to work. When I set the kick's dynamic eq sidechain to tom1, tom2 & tom3 and go to the tom1's dynamic eq to do the same thing, there is no kick channel to select for the side chain. Further on, when I go to tom2 sidechain, I can no longer choose to select kick and tom1 into the sidechaining. Why can't it be set so they all would be listening to each other and lower the 100hz frequency when they heard each other? Thanks
I just learned about tonal and harmonic EQs and am wondering if Studio One 5 has either in the stock plug ins. How would I know if the EQ is transparent, tonal or harmonic?
Does it only duck a preselected frequency? I would love to use this for something like a piano where it ducks only the frequency that is being played. So if you are playing a note of 440hz the side chain is ducked in the 440hz range. Does that make sense@?
I'm worried for vocals that have a wider range of frequencies, this example was nice but it was just a very limited in range and basic electro music... would it work with all frequency range for say like an opera singer on delicate orchestra music or even an acoustic rock band?
Thanks Gregor for your great videos. Always informative! Does the dynamic equalizer function work with midi tracks. I have followed your instructions but don't seem to be able to create the dynamics as you have shown. Thanks!
As a long time user since version 1.6 ; of the program that introduced an integrated mastering page 📄; dynamic eq has been a long time coming !!! But I’m here for it
curious what the benefit is over sidechaining multiband compression. is it just the more surgical narrow frequencies and transparency of the eq itself?
Multiband compressor is different from dynamic EQ. The first one has several frequency bands separated by hipass and/or lowoass filters. The second one has gain control in every band, witch is dynamically controlled depending on the input signal.
With multiband compresor, you compress the signal of a specific band frecuency, with dynamic EQ you afect the gain of a specific frecuency, and have all the benefict of a EQ, for me its better for sidechain, give me much more control, it´s more detailed. But it´s not compression, taths the diference.
The main difference between the two is that you can adjust the width and slope of the affected frequency using the Q on a dynamic EQ, which is not the case on a Multiband Compressor. -GBY
Can you automate the solo functions on bands? I will be upgrading soon. this would be an amazing feature if you wanted to do a radio vocals for just a word or something.
Not sure if helps you, but Craig Anderson just did a PreSonus Friday Tip Week titled - Ultra-Easy Mid-Side Processing with Artist. It is a remake of a longer post from back in June. Coincidentally it just popped up in my S1 V5 Start page yesterday.
I’m currently having difficulty retrieving the sound of a project I'm working on. I’ve tried every possible trick and failed. Kindly help out, as I'm in a desperate situation. There's no sound at all with this particular one.
Hi, have you tried disabling all Plug-ins in your Song by clicking on the Power Button at the bottom of the Track List (where the global Solo / Mute buttons are)? See if you can get sound then. Also, please double check your Master Output routing and Audio I/O settings. -GBY
Does anyone else experience this bug? I just want to make sure it isn't system-specific before filing a bug report. 1. Open a new project. 2. Drag a WAV file into a track. It doesn't matter where. The sample rate or mono/stereo status doesn't seem to matter, but make sure there's audio at the very beginning of the Event. 3. Insert a Pro EQ3, either as an insert or Event effect. 4. Enable the LLC stage. The slope or hard/soft choice doesn't seem to matter. 5. Transform to rendered audio, or Render if it's an Event effect. The apparent bug is that this mutes first few 1 or 2 seconds of the WAV file. This doesn't happen with any of the other stages, only the LLC stage. If you do encounter this issue, the workaround is to add several seconds of blank audio at the beginning of the file prior to rendering.
There is something substantially wrong with the code. When bouncing the track with the Pro eq3 on the track , it cuts the beginning of the rendered track off. Make sure there is no extra space in the beginning of that track, before rendering. It’s a serious bug. Who knows what else is wrong with that program. Rendering is a very important issue, there must be something wrong with the code, my guess. And that’s with their own plug-in, let alone the third party plugs.

Your psychology is totally correct. We notice changes that happen above or in front of a background field. Bingo.

Another solution is a transient shaper on the mastered track :)
