Today is the first in a multipart series on the history of witches, in this one we are looking at how witchcraft was viewed in the middle ages. Next time we are looking at witches in literature and art, and then after that witches in movies and tv. Thanks for watching!

Hey guys, thank you so much for watching I hope you liked this one. It is a little different but was fun to work on, the next one will all be about witches in art and literature, and then after that witched in film and tv, see you then!
You should do a video essay about the werewolf trials.
@@tommyhicks4510 That was almost this one funny enough, I really want to do a similar video on werewolf media though so that will for sure happen at some point down the road.
@@InPraiseofShadows I'll be looking forward to it. Great job on this one man 👍

Id say this about witches. You know like in the movie the witch. Im a Christian btw. But anyway. Its simple. You get your witch. Tie em up or apprhend them somehow. Them you get that bible and read them scripture and also memorize scripture to show em God's power Against their witch (demonic/satanic) witch power. The witch will either react or mock u. But thats how u find out if they are a witch. While I dont agree with torturing ppl to get info everyone should get a fair trial except for terroist but thats a different story. But anyway but it if a witch has to be burnt then it must be done.

So let me get this straight. The misconception of Witches was started by an old guy who got rejected by a woman?
We know nothing of his early life, but from what I can piece, I think he grew up with a bitchy mother.
@@Lilas.Duveteux That would explain a bit. Thank you!
@@admirador3239 I have no proof of that, but with such violently misogynistic men, it's almost always mother related.
@@Lilas.Duveteux It's ok :) It's a theory.
@@Lilas.Duveteux I wonder how true that is. I'm reluctant to believe that mummy issues play that much of a part in misogyny, because if it's true then it backs up freud (who was wrong about just about everything, if I remember right) and kind of implies that men with parental trauma are abusive by default. Not to say that Kramer didn't have parental issues and that they didn't play a part into his violent brand of misogyny, but I don't think that we should generalise about all sexist men. I would definitely like to learn more about what makes sexist men like Kramer exist, though.
(sorry to butt in)
The saddest part is that if you were accused. There’s no way you can escape, they’ll find always find an excuse to kill you.
Not fun for indigos and starseeds
Not true. I escaped
what is so baffling to me is that, if witches possessed all these powers as listed in Krämer's book, how would anybody ever be able to even capture them? that is so stupid. also, can we identify Krämer as an ancient incel?
Because the women captured probably weren't actually witches.
@@tiffmonique7154 really? Wow. What a surprise 😮
They didn’t use common sense clearly because it was easier to be sexist and go along with it.
@@k00ki3izkrazy not much has changed for centuries then

@TheMagnificentPony wow youre so smart
@TheMagnificentPony Why was it necessary for you to say that? The phrase was never gendered.
@TheMagnificentPony Your comment implies otherwise. You go out of your way to seek conflict that wasn't there to begin with.

Don't blame the witches.
I read somewhere that the pointy hat were often worn by women who owned taverns, breweries. To signal their profession. They often kept cats to keep rodents from getting into the grain. Thus the relation between the pointy hat and cats, just another way to get women out of business. Wish I could remember the source, was very interesting. Great video BTW!
Jael S even more so, medicine (as explained in this video) was dominated by women. Then, all the history of the witch trials, the jailing of people distributing herbal remedies, the executions, etc. Suddenly men start taking up medicine. They study “physick” and so they were physicians, but wanted the prestige of the scholars and academics and thus started using the term “doctor”, and they keep women/witches out all the way up until they kick women out of the birthing process-midwives were so crucial and there was disastrous consequences (...and still are) by changing the way birthing had been done for so long. So, women are actually returning to medicine. (Physicians salaries, however, is a far more complex issue to go into, especially depending on where you live, due to general economic and government policy shifts.)
Actually witches today wear pointy hats as a fertility symbol
@@natashadahl7541 its not an overall reason. Many of us have adopted the hat as its an identifier. You have no idea how many popes were criminals who used religion because they knew that would give them power. So many of them hired prostitutes or had people killed. Recently in the past 20 years we had a pope that was an accused Nazi.

Thank you so much, part 2 should be out really soon hopefully. It is already mostly written and I'm going to start recording audio for it in the morning. I always strive to do something better with each video so it makes me really happy to hear that.
But I agree with you, I originally read the Malleus Maleficarum out of curiosity. I wanted to write a story while in college about witches, and became interested in the history involving them and that was when I first encountered the book, and I have known for a long time now that I would one day do some sort of piece on it because it made me so angry to read it. I had never come across a historical document that got to me to that extreme degree on an emotional level before and I really wanted that to come across because all of the violence that came from it was entirely senseless and needless, and it resulted in a lot of problems still to this day. And because of that I knew I wanted to talk about it in some form eventually. Thank you so much for watching, it means a lot to m, and thank you for your kind words.
You should read about the misandry men were subjected to in ancient times....but hey ..lets make believe it's only men.
@@KortovElphame Stfu. Your logic is gaslighting at best, the fact that women didn't even have access to many basic rights until the last 100 years or so says more than enough.
Men also weren't, if you didn't watch the video, publicly hunted, tortured and executed for their gender.
Learn to empathize with people that have different parts than you, holy fuck.
Neither were women, they were burned because people thought they were witches, daft as the notion may have been, no one burned women because they were women it was always for some perceived infraction
@@jimsaintruth4248 It's naive to think it wasnt based on being born a woman, but it must be drawn out more for you, so I will...it wasn't just "being a woman" it was always tied to sex. Women who were unattainable (like Kramer hated women who he couldn't have sex with, so do most men) or who "flaunted their sexuality" which isn't a thing. It was essentially a perceived sexuality or feminine "other"ness which men feared. I would say an old maid would be exempt, but that's not true, cause she could be a healer and seen as odd, therefore she could still be burned. No one was safe if you were a woman, it is like being a Jew during WW2, the demographic might not mean you surely die, but you were specifically persecuted for belonging to that hated group. You could be born blonde and be lucky, or you could be born obviously Jewish. I would say being born totally sexless, unsexual and devoid from male attention and desire (which most women aren't) is the equivelant, women who were born say, with long beautiful hair and very "womanly" would be more likely to be witchy. Believe me, take it from a woman who was grossly hit on by men since age 10 for being "too sexy"...the way men see you can be a curse. A person can't help how they look or how creepily sexual some men see her as, but the persecution does stem from being a woman and all that comes with.

No transgender person claims to be a biological female, only a woman. Gender is a social construct, which can vary depending on the person. Would you be offended be a woman dying her hair to a darker color, if you had dark hair because they didn't originally have black hair?
No, that's stupid.
Trans women who transition, ARE treated like all other women in life because that is what they are seen as. On every level, except in chromosomes, trans women are women. And chromosomes aren't always an accurate tool to decide sex because biological females can have typical make chromosomes. When you think of women and men, do you think they should be equal? If you are going to say yes then you acknowledge that all the stereotypes against women used to oppress them are societal constructs and there is no perfect woman or guidelines to what a women must be.
Have you heard of intersex people? They are individuals born as both sexes essentially, many have both sets of genitals or mixed chromosomes, etc. These individuals often get made female with surgery as babies. Would you call these women fake because they were not born with something as simple as a vagina?
Nice to know that you think your vagina defines who you are as a woman, seems like a very misogynistic point of view but yet you surely don't want men to define you as a woman by your body.
Trans women are actually MORE DISCRIMINATED against then average women. They are BRUTALLY raped, often sodomized, hunted down and murdered and assaulted, and then people will claim a panic defense because the person was transgender.
And alongside that, trans women who pass as biological women, or look biological, are discriminated against as much as other women.
You have no idea about the struggles of trans people and yet claim that they are the ones pretending to know the struggles of women. You are the one pretending!
There's no excuse to be a bigot. Trans women are not hurting you and many are young teenagers just trying to feel comfortable and happy with themself.
Edit: also change isn't that easy. These people spend their whole life living as a particularly hated minority, thousands of dollars in money and time because it's not as easy as going "I'd like to have a vagina please" you have to have wait YEARS and have many therapy appointments with specialists and doctors to make sure you are sure about it and actually transgender.
Then, you have to live as someone who's scared to simply exist because anyone around you could be the last person you meet.
Women can't legally be refused jobs based on their sex.
If you are transgender, many states have it to where they can be refused work and service just based on who they are.
Trump tried to propose something that would let doctors REFUSE to treat transgender people and could DENY THEM MEDICAL CARE based on who they are as a person if it was "against their religion"
Have you ever had a president act like you should be denied healthcare based on your gender?
If you were turned into a man tomorrow and had to live as a man everyday the rest of your life, would you be uncomfortable?
Edit 2:
Transgender people have gender dysphoria which is a diagnosable condition that makes people extremely uncomfortable as their birth sex. There are little children who try to cut their penis off because of this and are suffering because they were born with the wrong anatomy. Theories are that, in the womb, there have been studies that studied transgender brains and noticed that trans women had brains that worked similar to a biological woman's brain and vice versa. People think that a mishap In the womb is responsible for this. Gender dysphoria is literally the intense feeling that your body is wrong. A transgender woman will feel like a penis does not belong.
No one would cut off their limbs if they weren't suffering.

A small thing. Witch in Polish is wiedźma which divides from wiedza- knowledge in English so the whole word roughly means women with knowledge. It's something like English wizard dividing roughly from wisdom and from wise man.
It's also a source of one D&D meme: Wizards use inteligence stat instead of wisdom.
Thank you for specifying at the beginning that you’re not talking about real witches but the depiction of them in media,
Very important distinction and a huge relief
I always assumed the Malleus Maleficarum was a product of its time, not the other way around. That's somehow even more horrifying.

As an Austrian from Innsbruck and a Wiccan witch, I am sooooo glad that someone talks about our part in the witch trials, because here, everyone is just deadly silent about it and I don't think that most of my friends/family even know that we had witch trials and that it actually was a big deal here. Thanks for making this video, it is really very good and informative
so op of the witch hunter book was an incel what a surprise
No, the Catholic Church at that point had taken up the belief, Eve and thus all women, to be lessor and the responsible for the Fall...these were misogynists, and their views still color morals and values today. Making Incels the outgrowth of not the ascibed value leading to this....
Well, he was a monk, so... voluntarily Celibate. Opt-in... And I'm still waiting for the part where he's wrong on women... Thank you, this one and part two are probably the hardest videos for me because they are a little out of my normal style of topics that I cover, but I love working on deep subjects like this because it lets me learn a lot on them. I actually get sad when there are things that I find super interesting that don't fit into the narrative of the video really cleanly and I have to cut them haha sometimes I just still leave them in though anyways such as the story about where broomsticks come from in this one. I'm glad you liked the video though, that makes me happy to know. Thank you for your kind words!
I have literally watched this video 3 Times now, and still there is a lot of information i have not picked up on yet haha. really thorough. And as a viewer you can sense your commitment and personal interest in those subjects.
One question I have, you talk about movies a lot and I assume you watched "The VVitch". What´s yout opinion on that ?
@@johnd.6299 Wow that's awesome, thank you for that. As for The Witch, I'm honestly a little afraid to admit that I am pretty mixed on it. The next video in this witch series is covering pretty much every witch movie ever made similar to the clown one I did, and it's going to end with me covering The Witch. But I will go ahead and say that I love about eighty percent of that movie. I love the atmosphere, the dread that builds the whole time, the acting and the commitment to staying as period accurate as possible. But I really personally hate the end of that movie because of the things that I said in this first video. Because way back then, Heinrich Kramer suggested that women were witches because they would be vulnerable to the temptations of Satan, and this movie kind of agrees with that I think because in the end Satan succeeded in creating a new witch by targeting a young woman on the cusp of adulthood. He doesn't target anyone else to become a new witch but her, and in that I think the film fails to comment on Kramer's ideas. I would have personally liked it a lot more had Thomason rejected his offer or tried to reject it, but for me at least movies like Rosemary's Baby and The Witches of Eastwick have female protagonists that have a lot more agency in dealing with the devil than Thomason is ever allowed. Sorry that was long lol I will hopefully say that more elegantly in that video, but more or less I love a lot of that movie but hate a lot of the general message it holds. But it does get so much right in its portrayal of the witch, and deserves massive props for that because it is pretty much the only film to commit to depicting a medieval style idea of a witch that well.

Harry Potter started my journey to deconvert from Fundamentalist Christianity. They said that Harry Potter was teaching real witchcraft. So I started researching paganism and witches and Wicca. I asked the people in my church if they have read Harry Potter and none of the did. I read the whole thing and wondered why that was condemned but the Lion the WITCH and the wardrobe is OK for Christians as it was written by C.S. Lewis.
Congrats on getting rid of misconceptions :) Wish you all the best on your new journey!
My oldest sister wouldn't let her children read or watch Harry Potter for years because it depicted magic. She and most of the rest of my family are extremely devout Southern Baptists.
>the witch in C.S Lewis’ book is the antagonist
>Harry Potter has witches and wizards as protagonists
That’s probably why. Also C.S Lewis’ books took a lot from Christianity, so I’d imagine they’d be more comfortable around it.
@@blessedjosephat1181 Both stories have witches. Why would C.S. Lewis write about a witch? There were bad witches in Harry potter. So, the Magi who went to see Baby Jesus... good wizards or bad wizards
Definition of magus
1a: a member of a hereditary priestly class among the ancient Medes and Persians
b often capitalized : one of the traditionally three wise men from the East paying homage to the infant Jesus
2: MAGICIAN, SORCERER
@@mugglescakesniffer3943 Because its apart of the world he created? You ignore that the witch in the book is the antagonist, as in the bad guy. Why would a fundamentalist church disagree with that portrayal of a witch?
Magi, in this instance, refers to 1a) and b). The three wise men were Zoroastrian priests, that is to say, “Magi”. They existed in a period before the modern definition of what a witch is, and certainly don’t fit under it. So the question is irrelevant.
Furthermore, the second part of the definition (“Magician and Sorcerer”) also doesn’t represent the same archetype as witches and wizards in Harry Potter, at least not during the period in which the biblical magi existed. “Sorcerer and Magician” referred to fortune tellers and illusionists at the time.
Loved the bit about Ireland! Though It’s had had its dark days with the catholic church, the country has an extremely rich folklore, and has always respected their “witches”, i.e women of strong standing in their community, with their own mind, and not afraid of their sexual power.
One of the most famous, Biddy Early, was a herbalist, doctor, veterinarian and modern day “counsellor”, so renowned for her healing powers, that people would travel far and wide just to be granted an audience with her. They say the pope even knew who she was. But, of course for all the wrong reasons.
Born in the 1700’s, Biddy was a bit of a rebel, and not only drank and smoked, but was an openly sexual woman, and possibly Ireland’s first 'cougar' at that, having had 4 husbands, all of which were much younger than her.
The police didn't like her, the church despised her, but the people respected her. And possibly feared her too. So much so, that when a prominent “male” doctor questioned her “healing” methods, and she was brought before a courts charged under the 1586 Witchcraft Statute, the case was thrown out “due to lack of sufficient evidence against the accused" because the prosecution couldn't find one single witness to speak out against her! Ha!
Far from being a “devil worshipper”, Biddy was said to be very spiritual, and many believed she was psychic. Legend grew around a famed blue bottle that she carried with her, a supposed gift from the fairies, or so she said. With or without her blue bottle, her “powers” of healing alarmed the Catholic Church. She was denounced publicly from the pulpit - on orders from Rome no doubt - and stopped attending mass completely, unheard of at the time.
She never “charged” for her gifts, instead accepting only what people could afford to give. Her cures were said to not only consist of applying herbs to a wound, feeding a concocted recipe to the sick, or talking somebody through a brevemente, but often treating animals too.
Today, Ireland proudly recognises Biddy not as a “witch” but as a pioneer with a gift for healing; an independent and smart woman who did her “thing” and refused to be "browbeaten” by the priests' and landlord's authoritarian doctrine.

I think it's notable that the abrahamic religions were not so homoginized early on. There was a lot more variation and discourse in general a more living and varied ideology.
The reason the Synod of Constantine was brought together to codify the Bible and hemogonize the Faith. This was because the differing faiths and belief in accountings of the Christ were causing the Christian quarter in Rome to be a literal battleground and potential ignition of a citywide riot. So, acceptance in the variants of their own assumed Faith, not so much. Regardless, we still see such infighting today, the battle of supreamacy of Dogma still played out, though not as barbarically. Although the Irish probably would beg to differ...
The variants like Pelagianism and Aryanism persisted for centuries.
Zombie Zeke they still aren't homogenized. Christianity is its own beast that makes lies about Muslims and Jews to force us to bend to their power, while ignoring the lesser known Abrahamic religions, such as Samaritans. Within Judaism, disagreement is outright expected, and it has widely varied beliefs due to the massive diaspora- including beliefs that many consider magical.

To me, Kramer seems like he was either frustrated that he couldn't get a female date or he was the ugly stereotype of the closeted, misogynistic gay guy. Whatever his reasons for writing "The Malleus Maleficarum", he was a horrible excuse for a human being who wrote a sickening book and I sincerely hope karma has bitten or will bite him hard in the ass. The amount of human life lost as well as the centuries of herbal knowledge, spiritual wisdom, and native beliefs and cultures is just heartbreaking to think about. Thanks to the Burning Times, humanity's connection to our reverence for the earth was almost scorched away completely and the powerful, respected roles women once had in their communities were set back thousands of years. And even now, in 2020, we're still experiencing the effects of that. Just devastating. Gods guide us to do better, and grant the souls of those who suffered during the Burning Times peace. Blessed be. )O(
It's a myth that there was a concerted, focused war against witches and healers in Europe.
The replacement came gradually over many centuries, and the driving factor was political expediency, not religious fervor.
For example, the Cunningfolk in Britain were mostly male, middle class, and held other jobs, and were Christian.
The number of males killed in furing the witch persecution was not far from the number of females killed.
@@lockandloadlikehell Did you watch the video? If I need blood I use my own or go down to the local butcher shop and get some. Just like Christianity can have fucking crazy ass abusive people any religion can as well. Unlike most of the abrahamic churches we don't cover up sexual abuses and we report it to the local authority... but ya know, we're the evil ones. The church has a history of murder in the name of God, the blood of innocent people and children on their hands. Historically speaking the church has a stronger blood lust then that of the people in my path, the satanic panic was shown to be a modern day witch hunt filled with falsehoods and lies from Christians( comical) maybe try to understand those of us who choose this path instead of listening to lies from the church trying to scare children. One thing is that Lucifer didn't exist until the roman translation of the bible. That scripture in Isaiah was about king nebuchadnezzar II as the kings in Babylon were called sons of the dawn which translated to Lucifer in Latin form the Greek translation of phosphorus... most satanic practitioners know the bible better then most Christians, we actually take the time to learn what is written and not what some person spewing half truths and lies from behind a podium tells us.
@NXVI the first minute of that documentary tells me everything I need to know about your mind set... conspiracy theories and elite secret society... telling people to not research something out the gate because you'll commit a crime in the process.. yeah.. sure..
@NXVI also luciferians are not satanist either. You really need to fo some real research
