I think that was the intention. If I remember from watching this with the dvd commentary it was kind of the point to have nobody really be killed in this part of the movie.

The best part of this shootout is probably when Nick gets involved in a swordfight and while he could shoot or cold-cock the guy, fights him honorably.
I've rarely seen such a perfect movie.

I can easily see Why they are missing their shots.
Quite a few of these people haven't had the proper Training to use their weapons, unlike Nicolas. They are also relying on suppressive fire, which While good with an Automatic weapon, isn't something to be used While using slower firing weapons.
The times where Nicolas was missing, was due to him Hip-Firing, which means he can't actually aim his shots.

Shotguns are accurate up to 100 yards.
They're not like video game ones.
Shotguns have a range from 20 to 40 meters. Video games double down on this because of competitive balance, most weapons can’t be too powerful compared to other weapons.

What bothers me is that most of the actors are AIMING INTO THE AIR. That's a common mistake among actors who are firing 'from the hip' or at least not using the iron sights. They tend to shoot way OVER the heads of their targets. Don't know why but I've seen countless films where actors are holding their guns at a STUPID angle.
