GMC 637 cid v8 gas

  • The 637 v8 gas replaced the 702 v12 in 1966. This low rev motor( revs at 400 rpms idle) was manly used in the fire apparatus application but was still offered in normal trucks.This truck is a 1972 GMC tte 9500 . It used to be a firetruck with the town of Perth Ontario.

    Ok, I straight up thought it was being turned over on the starter and thought it had a rod knock or a bad engine mount. Then I heard the exhaust and the compressor.... Man, GMC built one of of an engine.

    these were low rpm low compression heavy duty engines built to industrial standards high rpm is their enemy

      I sure will post more videos when the snow goes away. But she would never pull a trailer doesn't have the tractor package

    There are reasons they don't build these anymore, or the related v6s, like efficiency, power, etc. My N14 could outpull several of them but.....having said that, I sold parts for these as many as 25 years ago and they weren't built cheap. Turns out some folks put 400k on them, and although mine needs a second rebuild at 2 million, 400k is even more phenomenal back then

      Brent Hass they quite making them when they stopped selling due to cost of fuel but they still kept working away till parts became rare to keep them going after 200k hours

      The 702s were much better longevity-wise than the 637. Irrigation pump 702 have ran for the equivalent of 5,500,000 miles on natural gas, basically non-stop but for maintence, for 25-30 years.

    Dad had one in a 69 short nosed conventional cab - hauled steel with it. Did blow it up once and replaced the crank - weirdest looking crankshaft you can imagine being it was a 60 degree V motor - had a separate con rod journal for every rod...
    I remember dad saying it would out pull a 8V-71 on the hills.... also, 4mpg tuned up and 2 mpg when it needed plugs and the points set.... LOL

    Modern semi engine makes about 500 hp and 1600 ft lbs torque...that 637 makes about 250 hp and maby close to 600 lbs of torque..the 637 is choked way down.. with tiny carb.. stock intake..stock heads..stock tiny peanut cam..just think if they made high performance stuff for that big ol 637 ..twin turbos..fuel injection...monster cam..raceheads..3000 hp and 3000 ft lbs of torque would be possible ...now when it comes to makin power..that modern semi diesel dont seem so awsome..dont always look for the bad in things and people..but instead see the POTENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!

      There are already lots of 10+ litre big blocks in drag racing making 2500+ will blocks designed for the abuse. I am sure 1940's early 50's tech was not over building the blocks to take 3000hp (Yes I know, 70's Hemi blocks take 8000hp). My C15 Cat in my W9 makes 550hp, 2,050lb-ft. You know what makes them amazing? Peak torque comes in at 950rpm, and stays flat at 1,800lb-ft until 2,250rpm. It's not the power that's amazing, it's the torque and where it makes it. One of these big block race engines couple to a Eaton RTFL-18 would be completely and utterly inefficient in a class 8 truck with a 65,000lb excavator on the float. I don't know much about the GMC 637, but I doubt it has the necessary strength as a build platform, ie 2 bolt main caps, head design, block material etc.

      It would require a custom made billet crank that would cost as much as a 634 big block chevy...might as well just use the lighter simpler BBC based design.

    Sounded pretty damn smooth! Love to hear it bellowing under a decent load! I hate those noisy ass air compressors,seems like every one I've ever heard on a gasser were loud as hell! Is this one a Bendix?

    Couldn't the heads be ported, headers fabbed up and a sheet metal intake made for it?
    Would love to see this in a hot rod.

      lemons, I don't think you can find the heads to support that. These have tiny torque producing ports. Also 60 degree block means can't get off the shelf cam. then there's the balancing issue.

      Lots of folks have considered this. Especially the big tall deck motors in 2.5 ton trucks. Should be great boat motors but theres just no parts to make them flow or run with a typical big block GM.. they would still be good for a big houseboat or the like.

      @@michaelteeple8704 the tall deck big blocks are no problem, quite a bit of aftermarket support. just use normal bbc pistons with .400 longer rods. its rather common. edelbrock sells intakes and theyre normal bbc heads.

    What is that between the transmission and rear axle? At first looked like a transfer case but no front axle..gear splitter maybe?

      Probably the transmission for the fire pump (which has been removed). When it's shifted to pump the output from the transmission was routed to the fire pump instead of the rear wheels.

      +trucking604 Horsepower 275 @ 2800 rpm. Torque 600 @ 1600 rpm. Bore and Stroke 5.125" x 3.86". Compression ratio 7.50:1

      +Kyle Adams Torque Monster! Surprised at the low compression though. Imagine if it had like 9.5:1 or 10:1 compression! I guess they made it for longevity.

    WE had on of these in our fire truck a 1966 gmc wasn't worth a damn. blew up on us twice.

      Ralph Hitchens Jr. I don't think a. 637 was in anything in 66 as that was around the time of the 702.
