I absolutely love that I found this raw demo of this song. May Pang, said jokingly that yes it could be about someone or something like that, giving a hint that it is about himself. I truly believe that he's singing about himself. The reason I think this, is it's just too personal. And there's a line in the song that maybe not all John Lennon fans know this. I believe it was in 1965 thereabouts when John had to have a tooth pulled. Now that tooth still exists, and believe it or not from where I live it's a hundred miles away from me in Alberta Canada just a note there. But anyway he talks about your teeth are clean but your mind is capped. The reason John had to have said tooth pulled is because he wasn't keeping up his Dental appointments and having his teeth cleaned enough. Oh I'm sure he brushed them, but he sings 'your teeth are clean, but your mind is capped' And then when he talks about 'Your mouthpiece squawks as you spread your lies.' He was going through his 'Lost Weekend" at that point. And then the part where he talks about "Your phone don't ring, no one answers your call, how does it feel to be off the wall?' Same reason. Oh yeah he's talking about himself alright. I like this version better than the version on "Walls And Bridges." And yeah his voice does have the ability to cut right through you. He was the voice of the Beatles, yeah Paul was great Paul is struggling with that beautiful voice right now, as John probably would be if he had lived once you get older these things happen. But the whole point of it is John Lennon could do stuff with his voice that Paul McCartney couldn't even dream up in his wildest dreams. When a man or a woman or any singer has the ability to cut right to the quick and get you right where you live that's an amazing singer. And no I still can't believe that John Lennon hated his own voice wow right?
@@Venusandjupiteinunion6434 It's truly invigorating to encounter someone else who has been immersed in John Lennon's music for a while and articulates how he distinctly stands apart from Paul, especially in terms of creativity and vocal expression. May Pang brought out so much in John. He became a better father to Julian she was friends with John's first wife. She inspired a lot of music for 2 years. I wish he never went back to yoko but he wouldn't have had his son Sean.
Actually I'm pretty sure it's about himself. There is a little giveaway in the song that some people may have missed. There is a line where he sings your teeth are clean but your mind is capped. Back in the 60s John had a tooth pulled, and the reason he had the tooth pulled is because he wasn't keeping up his Dental hygiene. So when he says your teeth are clean very easily talking about his own teeth. An he sings 'there you stand with your LA Tan and your New York walk and your New York talk.'? He could very well be talking about when he was in LA with May Pang. Let' just say I see a lot of him in the song.
Completely agree! 🔥🔥 I truly I think it was overproduction is what really held back his solo career from taking off like it should've in the Charts. Even worse he also chose Phil Spector who already loved adding unnecessary filters and extra oddities like the wall of sound to the tracks. Really a shame, caused him to be underrated vs Paul McCartney and how well he was doing with Wings, then sadly it only got worse when he passed so early and Paul McCartney then continued to become the best most successful Beatle, very frustrating for me with John being my favorite Beatle and seeing how underrated his music's is with pepole, especially with these stripped-down tracks! 🔥🔥🔥

Just listening to his voice my God. He deserves to be honored for being so honest right to the bone. His girlfriend May Pang said that he said that it was about himself. And if you really think about it, if you know anything about who John was as a person he projected that he was a tough guy. He always said I tried to be macho. But inside he was absolutely vulnerable, shattered from everything that had happened to him in his life, and hence Steel and Glass. Oh yeah it's about it's about himself. There's no doubt about that. In fact there's a funny little line if you listen to the song where he talks about, 'your teeth are clean but your mind is capped.' Here's how I come to this conclusion. John he had had a tooth pulled I think it was back in mid 60's and the reason he had the tooth pulled is because apparently he wasn't keeping up his Dental visits and taking care of his teeth.
