I learned production cutting on cable chokers. Used a mid 80’s 640 John Deere with a raised arch. Ran 20 chokers. Obviously only used all 20 on fir and spruce pulp and hardwood pulp. But boy would that thing pull!!! I remember one day we were cutting big hemlock. We had a minor breakdown so we had to run for parts. So by the time we got back and fixed the break down our trucker was almost their and we only had half a load on the yard. (Wheeler). So I scrambled and layed down and limbed and topped like 8 hemlock 3 1/2 - 4 foot on the stump. I don’t remember how many we grabbed but all I remember is the front tires were off the ground all the way back to the yard. Had to stop every time we had to turn to steer lol. That one hitch loaded half a wheeler and still had a start for another load. I don’t remember the exact year of that skidder but I do remember it was a straight 640. Not a B or whatever. It was a straight 6 turbo. And it was turned up a tad. But with that raised arch that thing was an animal!!! Me and the 1 other guy worked together and were cutting ten load a week. Two saws two men and 1 skidder. Ahhhh to be young again!!! Lol. Sorry for rambling!!!!
He needs some hangers so he can wrap the chokers around the tower and use then in order and so he don't have to dig them all out of the winch when he sucks them in , when traveling. Some operators had them all one way some would wrap 2 one way and 2 or 3 the other way clockwise and counterclockwise. It makes witching and skidding a lot easier. Not running over chokers etc.
Also if he has a lower road, not sure why he isn't just bailing off and grabbing trees on his way down. Looks like a lot of work hooking dragging up unhooking only to do it all over again. Funnest part about skidding and dozers is steep ground.
You sure earned each of these logs! Wore me plum out just watching! How many feet of that 5/8th you have on er at the moment? Looks like you about used it all a couple times! Nice camera angle!👍Thanks
I don’t have the sheer steepness of that land, it’s more kettle holes and rock. Which would be a better machine. This dozer or a 540 Deere or TJ 230 rubber tire skidder?
Interesting never saw skidding with a dozer. All that hardwood you harvest what market is it for? Is it the biggest bulk of your work? great work stay safe.
@@nuts319 ok so can you explain further I don’t know what you mean by that lol, I guess I’m asking what is the wood used for? Ex. Plywood, chips, ? Thanks
I'm in need of a good working (not junk/worn out) JD 3325 winch and JD 3600 log arch for my JD 450D dozer. Anyone know of one let me know please. I live in Central Ohio. Thanks for another great video Pete Stay Safe :)
Pete you brought back a lot of memories. Wore out a lot of gloves. Take care and have a blessed week and see you on your next vidja.
You seem to have this affinity for side hills.. one leg gonna be longer than the other pretty soon.. great video...be safe man
Thank you for sharing man i been watching for hours your video it looks like hard work

Pete great video, you’re like a billygoat on the hillside! Thanks for sharing. Kevin
Like the old school logging 👍
Wow that girl free wheels. Nice. Most them dozer ones gotta pull like your repelling off a cliff
That was the quickest cableknot tie job i have ever seen😳
Lol
Just another great video from you. Stay safe
Bringing back bad memories dude!
some nice looking timber.. cable chokers are the way Togo nutz them chain chokers get heavy to lug around haha handy for bigger wood tho
You may already know this trick but I clamp vise grips on the cable tail to sinch up a knot when working by myself.
Yeah I didn’t have a pair
I like the cable chokers to they are faster n more stable. Jus alot easer to use n mess with
Your a very hard worker
Pete you certainly don't need to go to a gym to stay fit, you get a workout just pulling the cable then crawling your way back stay safe.
That week wore me out
Outstanding video- subscribed
Welcome to the channel and thank you

I’d say there’s 150 I usually start with 200 foot
@@nuts319 copy...👍
Great video. What size cable do you run? Stay safe.
5/8
Pete, looks like you need a smaller winch and remote to winch yourself up that hill. Stay safe, Bud!
Lol
Flashback to the sixties and early seventies when I set chokers for a d6. Have a great day.
Hey Pete 👋, a little hard on the cable lol
I can be lol
You need to add a "Job site steepness" surcharge to that bill!
I wish..
Excellent point Tom. I agree 100 percent!
He's gotta pay for the broken cable somehow... lol

We've all paid for cockiness, sometimes with $, sometimes with blood.
Truth right there👌

540 Deere is nice machine, definitely rubber tire if there’s rock
Great videos

I mostly cut hardwood yes and this all goes for grade or blocking

Hell yeah.... Screw chain chokers..
Nice looking stone bubbling outta the high side of that dozer cut. ??
Kinda shale like but it was hard
That some rough country you are working.

I might be able to hook you up! Let me talk to a guy. He rebuilds everything John deere.
I think that's same one that's on a 440 skidder
@@smity7096 That would be awesome. Just let me know please, thanks.
@@smity7096 Not sure, but it must be a JD 3325 winch and a JD 3600 model log arch. Thanks for your help. :)
You have to be almost nuts to be a logger.
Love it 🙂😀🖐👍
I take it you tied a knot in the cable to fix it
Yep
