My Fad and I would watch New Yankee Workshop together which is how I found your channel, looking for a substitute for Norm. Dad said that if he and Norm switched shops, Norm would still smoke my Dad in furniture building. I disagree. This video demonstrates how few tools someone really needs to build a good piece. It comes down to imagination, skill, and determination. Thanks for being back some good memories and yes, nice stool.
This is how a craftsman who had a disaster could start getting their life back on track. Make a few of these and you could get enough money to buy iron to go to making all of the other tools you need.
@@adamwilson4834 The forests here are mostly soft woods, pine, spruce, hemlock, douglas fir, western red cedar. For hardwoods, soft maples, alder, arbutus (madrone), and a few small patches of Garry Oak (protected)
@@adamwilson4834 Mostly, yeah. The vast majority of what we have around here is pine or western red cedar. There are some native hardwood species that you can find on the coast more, but usually that is either Myrtlewood or Bigleaf Maple, both of which are pretty soft for hardwoods, and pretty boring and taupe colored. Most of what is around here because of how huge the logging industry is, are softwoods. There are some species other of oak and ornamental maples, but mostly just the types that don't get more than an inch or so in diameter and end up more like bushes.
That was incredible seeing you do that just the way you did. I was thinking that there is no way that he is going to do all of that work with just a chisel. I really like the rustic, natural look of that. I might have to try making my own stool like that except I would definitely include the use of power tools although not in the entirety of the project.
Brilliant! I am going to share this on the green woodworking fb page, I wonder if I could do it with just a mora?... What wood was the seat made from? I have never seen anything that colour over here (UK), is that flame elder?
Wondering if you know how to make those "X" Shaped Saw Horses that the Old Timers used to saw their firewood to length in/on. I've tried but mine kept collapsing.
Great stuff, pal. I gather that some folks like to make chairs with green seats and dry legs, so the expansion and contraction negates the need for any glue or wedges. Might be a good idea for a video?
Well, I never had any doubt you would be able to do that. What impressed me the most was you didn't cut yourself. If I tried to do a bench with just a chisel, the toolset would HAVE to include a box of bandaids. Now, I wouldn't be doing a bench with just a chisel. Momma didn't raise no fools. LOL. Seriously, that was damned impressive, James!!!!
That was a bad one, sorry. This video showed me that a single chisel is really useful tool even in the woods. I once considerd adding a chisel to my bushcraft tool bag, but hesitated, because it looked too carpentery like. A pro user can do amazing things with only one piece of metal, which is also light by carrying. So a great choise for the bag. Add there just a good quality folding saw and your ready to go.
James just a word of encouragement I like your videos better than Scorsese Or most of the other head case trash directors of hollyweird even when inspired by Tolkien
I'd hope that you go back and use the rest of the wood you felled, even though it can regenerate from small scale harvesting , it's shame to waste nice wood like that. Great video!

Well done. Really enjoyed this and your attitude. You have a nice and useful piece. Oh, and that Texas comment was on the nose. It's cold/hot/just-right today.
Other than the many times you were bracing words yourself this is AWSOME. The amount of times I thought “if he was alone in the woods, slips stabs himself and dies”
This is how I do my saw horses out of green wood. You can throw wedges in the top to tighten the legs up over time as they dry and shrink. I always use locust for the legs because it has a very low shinkrage rate.
this is inspiring for people who don't have all the tools . your chanel is always awesome but seriously, not the best idea to keep pointing the chisel at the arteries of your inner thighs. an accident in that context can bring quite irreversible damage.
A fun video and a good looking stool. You make a great point however, one doesn't need a lot of expensive equipment to complete carpentry projects; a few simple tools can work just as well. If I might be so bold, perhaps I cold share some life experience with you. Making furniture with your teeth might prove to be a step too far in a quest to simplify your work practices; I'm told that dentistry bills can quickly mount up. Thanks for sharing this fun build, and as ever, best wishes.
Channeling your inner rodent with a tiny tooth. IMO sometimes easier than chunking impossible stock with brute force and over-confidence in hardened steel (which utterly fails). Loving your channel while gaining my own skills, a great perspective improvement over a once clog-skeptic. $0.02
The internet challenged/trolled you, and you responded by actually doing it. You’re a legend
LOL thanks!
Agreed x
I'm going to make a bench tomorrow
Internet: “you’re still using tools”
James:... “hold my clog”
LOL yup. sounds about right!
Hi James wright sir with just a chisel and a mallet(wood branch) now you are the definition of woodworker sir loved this video keep it up
Seriously though I see chisels in a new light.
And determination. The two together are pretty damn comfortable
What an absolute legend.

Really enjoyed the rustic furniture. Would love to see more of pioneer-esque builds like this, but with the full shop! Haha
This is how a craftsman who could only afford one tool could start outfitting their shop.
He said stool sample. Yep, I like this guy.
I am Speechless! It's amazing how you can do that with just ONE chisel!
Well done James. Really enjoyed this minimalist/survivalist woodworking challenge. Would love to see more videos like this.
Thanks Ron. I have a few planned!
"And one chisel to rule them all". And, yeah, that was a little bit crazy. Especially liked the beaver act...
LOL thanks Ross!
In the spirit of your fantastic humour, that is treemendous cutting edge work. Thanks for your great videos. They are fun to watch.
Lol thanks John. I will keep them coming.
Don’t you just love the way that log split for you
You are more patient than I am. Nice job though. Looks great.
seems like a ton of work! But you sure did prove a point, well done.

LOL thanks James! and congrats on first!
Seriously this is inspiring
Wow, that log was beautiful as you were cutting into it. What type of wood was the bench seat?
That is boxelder. The red is often referred to as flame maple. It is a type of maple.
Stool sample! Great video.
Lol thanks!
Why did you do that? Why did i whatched the whole thing? Why did i liked It?
...
Nice work, Man!
LOL all good questions
Again, you didn't bring only one "tool". You brought your friend. ;)
This is an amazing job with only one tool ! Inspiring !
This was the most fun of all the videos we worked on together. Got to enjoy the woods and bring a piece of it home.
So much fun!
Good video. Subscribed instantly after watching how determined you were to only use chisel 👍
Hand-tool woodworking above and beyond! Well done!
Good job, well done for sticking at it.
You are crazy in the best way. Great job James. I love it
Lol thanks.
I love the absurdity, the challenge you gave yourself, and the humor you infused into this video.
That's one of the greatest woodworking video I ever seen ! Thank you :)
Thanks. My pleasure.

Sorry James can't do that. He is Herring impaired.
Box Elder is nice wood to work with using hand tools. It even bleeds while you cut it.

Whooooooooaaaaaaaa...! Love the attitude and realization.

right on. it will squeeze in nicely. in this case I made them slightly wegged so sitting on it will always keep them well wedged in.

Giving new meaning to "chisel plane"
What kind of tree/wood is this? I have some drying out and can’t figure it out.
Is box elder Or Ash leaf maple. It is a type of soft maple.
Filmed just a block down from my house! Kinda funny I’ve been down there filming too. Nice work James!
NIce! I use to live in Watertown!
Get in touch if you’re back sometime. Maybe we can do something similar aimed at spoons or bowls or something.
We still operate in Watertown. Maybe we can meet sometime.
Sounds great! Let’s do that.

I was going to say "I bet you have a lot more respect for beavers" when you put that shot in of you face deep in some wood chips 😅
What species tree is that? Liking the red in it.
That is boxelder. They often come with a red line. You'll hear it referred to as boxelder flame.
How long did it take to cut the piece out of the tree for the seat?
that was about 45 minutes. the whole project was around 8 hours or work.
I have to ask. Premium, or beater chisel?
This is done with a wooden handled harbor freight chisel.
Now you just need to build full house and fill it with the rest furniture :).

LOL fine I will take them off next time!

Once you had a wedge in you should of lifted the log and dropped it on the wedge. Use the log as it’s own hammer. More weight more force.
true, but it is also more uncontrolable and can easily split the log, but it would be more force for sure!
When you step up to a challenge, your one eager beaver! ( ;
