Watch The Cowboy and the Movie Star. It is a 90’s modern day western that is as good as they come. “Attention to Detail” and character growth with Sean Livingston ( Sean Young), going from spoiled diva to a strong woman who not only survived a difficult cattle drive but thrived in it, to the point she is going to make it her life. I gave it 10/10 stars on IMDB

While, in general, I don’t care for the “modern western”, Tombstone is an amazing movie!

Here is a summary of what (supposedly) makes a move a true 'Western':
The Western genre in film and TV refers to a category of stories set in the American Old West, typically in the late 19th century, which portray the frontier life, the clash between law and order and the lawless, and the individualism of the characters. Westerns are often characterized by their iconic visual and narrative elements, including cowboys, gunslingers, saloons, horseback riding, shootouts, and the vast, rugged landscapes of the American West. Westerns often deal with themes such as morality, justice, revenge, and the struggle for survival in a harsh and unforgiving environment. They can be gritty and realistic or romanticized and idealized, depending on the era in which they were made and the perspective of the filmmakers.
So while I really enjoyed a movie like Quigley Down Under, and it captures many of these themes, not being set in the American Old West rather disqualifies it. Perhaps we could call it a Southwestern?
The other movies on this list either partially or fully embrace the themes/location of a Western. However, the 'modern' sensibility (despair, overt sensuality, brutal violence) makes me nostalgic for the 'cartoon' violence of the 30s-50s that served to emphasize character and plot over visceral exploitation of what's now permitted.
So I'm still a fan of the 30s-40s over the 'modern' Western.

I think that the western comes in many forms! I like all various form, but I’ll take each movie & see if it stands alone! Although not in the ‘90s I think the Highwaymen & Mandalorian can be considered westerns!

Was a little bit complicated to remember them all but yes, in my opinion the most of them are westerns. The piece with Tom Cruise and the Quick and the Dead as the Johnny Depp film are no western by any means...I liked the Russell version more than the Costner's of Wyatt Earp . Wild Bill was nearly dawn but a western. Thanks guys Ludwig.

The only modern western worth watching that compare remotely with the classics would be Tombstone with Kurt Russell. Actors today are not masculine and no amount of acting convinces me. They act tough but aren’t. Maybe because they never got shot on the battlefield. And it was simply a different era of strong men.

most in your list are good movies, where the John Wayne era glorified lots of shoot outs and multiple dead bodys , The unforgiven was more realistic! it showed it was a big thing to kill another person , and it wasnt easy to live with afterwoods

    Are 1990's Westerns Real Westerns?
Are 1990's Comedies Real Comedies? 1990's Dramas Real Dramas? 1990's Horrors Real Horrors?
Perhaps you can cite an actual "Hard core Western fan" who backs your thesis instead of using vague descriptions that don't require you to even make a real argument..?

Happy New Year and God Bless... Sharon Stone and Leonardo just don't work... Far and Away wasn't a great western to me, good movie but not a true western in my opinion...Quigley I really like but it is Australia and not a classic western... Dead Man is not my kind of movie... Young Guns 2 is a little campy for a western... The rest really do measure up in my mind... Really good video, thanks for investing your time...
