One of the most amazing hats I have ever seen, a wonderful DIY project, and its probably more realistic than most "cowboy hats" in the movies. Wonderful
Dude, that aint no middle of the mall shit right there. I like that! I may make me one, more like a military boony hat though. Maybe take that copper head skin I got and use him as a hat band...
I like it! I have been reading up on tanning with walnuts and acorns and other sources. I am wanting to make a hat also. Your hat turned out nice. Thanks for the video
Thanks Marc. It takes some work, but you end up with a cool hat in the end. Indians used rawhide for lampshades and other cool items as well. I feel rawhide is overlooked today, everyone wants soft hide.
Awesome hat!! Great job you did. The only other thing I would suggest would be to see or glue a cloth sweat band to the inside to keep sweat from your head from staining the hat.
If you still have this hat, I think it would be really cool to see a layer of buckskin, or some softer, thicker leather, sewn around the brim and glued/sewn into the head portion. :)
Thanks for sharing and taking the time to make the video. I've a deer hide, I've half tanned with citric acid and salt, I'm going to give it a try. I think the skin will be similar to rawhide. I really like the hat awesome work.
Craig Ballantyne Thank you. I hope it turns out well for you. It may take a couple tries to get the right size hat. Good thing is you can redo it until its perfect.
I made my mould in a big container with potting soil and I used clay made out of flour and salt to get the actual form to hold. I can already see it's going to be a challenge to get the brim of the hat to stay flat. Anyway at least I have a use for the deer skins, I'll keep making them till I get one I like. Maybe this one. I will let you know how it turns out.
Craig Ballantyne Very cool approach. You'll get it after you work out the do's and don'ts. Just be patient with a task like this and you will get something not to many people can say they made. I used flat rocks to flatten the brim while it dried. A little crinkle is ok. Gives the hat some character.
Nice project can a wire outer brim for shaping be sewn into it along with a hat band both interior and exterior so that it will fit the head better and give it some weight incase of wind?
Have you put a head liner inside like a young animal skin (ie a baby goat or sheep)? And if so would one us the same hole to form the edge before sewing?
Very cool, I'm gonna make me some hats!!! Where would I get some Black Walnut Bark for making the Tanning Juice? Is there a video you do showing that process? Can I just use a bunch of old leaves and sticks to make the tanning juice?
Good stuff, thanks for sharing. I have a cold smoker I made for making summer sausage. It is basically a big wooden box with holes that is elevated & without a floor. I slide a grill underneath it and play with the ventilation so the smoke rises into the box but the heat doesn't usually get above 100F. I use this for smoking my hides; place a hide on the rack instead of fish/meat. This reduces the time I have to spend on this part of the process. Then again, who doesn't like to sit around a fire? Just thought I'd share in hopes of giving back. Loved your video; just finishing my authentic buckskins and was wondering what I'd do about a shade hat when I accidentally came across your video.
Fun Fact: According to Dave Canterberry, the reason smoking the hide waterproofs it is due to the particles of wood and carbon that are trapped within the fibers of the leather.
So I'm in the process of attempting this. Made my own walnut solution and everything. About to put it in the hole but I need to run and get some more salt. My only worry is that I didn't make the hole deep enough. Guess I'll find out after I put it in and let it dry a bit
@Sophia ive handled 14 deer hides. Various preservation methods. The only ones that didn't last were the album tanned ones and the no tan ones. What are you sealing with to prevent moisture? Moisture caused my untanned hides to rot.
hey man I just stumbled across your channel. love this hat, love what you do. I have a question though, what exactly is that " walnut solution?" And what else can I use to "color " the hat
I'd like to know that too :) I am looking at all the videos little by little so maybe I will come across it. I love listening to Tyler. It's so relaxing. FOUND IT! Tyler put a link in a comment below ruclips.net/video/dgi-_MvVGXM/видео.html
Another update: hat's still doing good. It's definitely very warm (winter hat). It actually fits a lot better now. All I did was let it sit unworn over the warmer months.
giovannis11607 Sorry for the late reply and thank you. I soaked it in the dye for a night or two. If you heat the dye over the fire and put the hide in it will dye better and faster. Then I rub some in after I smoke it to give it one last coat. Just use a rag to wipe it in like staining.
So an update to all who care. I've been occasionally wearing my hat the last couple months. Honestly it's annoying. It seems like it's a bit too tight. I have to stretch it everytime before I wear it so it sits ok. If I bend over or do something while wearing it it falls right off. Tomorrow I'm going to try to steam it and stretch it..
ILe Gal If you mean the brown colored solution, it is from black walnut hulls. I husk, put them in a pot of water and then heat them up. It gives you a strong dye or solution to tan with. It is full of tannin, juglone and iodine. Has some good uses for sure.
So my hat is really thick and flimsy. What did I do wrong? Anyone got any ideas? Edit: so my problem was my ground was just too wet. The hide basically never dried. I even used a whole big bag of pool salt lmao. I put the hide in a hard hat with wet dirt on the bottom (top inside of the hard hat) shaped like my top and it dried enough to keep its shape in 3 hours. So maybe try this if you have really wet dirt like me
Coolest hat I have ever seen. And you just can't beat the pride of making something with your own hands.
+Laszlo Musho Absolutely my friend

I love natural earth tone items like this. Outstanding work.
That is a killer hat. Colors turned out great. Love to see that bad boy 20 years from now, it will just get better. Great project.
+Nick C Thank you my friend. Your'e absolutely right on that.

I like theese kind of videos no intro no asking to sub or like just straight to work. Nice work 👍🏻
Never seen a hat made this way before. I never thought of making a hole in the ground! Simple. Great hat.
It works, give it a go
You are an excellent teacher.
Nice hat buddy thanks for the video too.
That is so nice!!! Never seen one like it! Amazing skill and talent there!!!
I like it! I have been reading up on tanning with walnuts and acorns and other sources. I am wanting to make a hat also. Your hat turned out nice. Thanks for the video
Impressive! That's a great looking hat, especially considering it started as a hole in your lawn, lol
OntarioBushcraftThank you. Haha I suppose you could form the hat out of clay to avoid digging up the yard.
Amazing project. Thank you!
Well hello Santa clause! Great tutorial for the kind of hat I'm going to make.
It looks great! Good job.
Nice video! That skink at the beginning is absolutely beautiful.
What a great video! You did a hell of a job! Thanks for sharing! Cheers Marc

Great project ! People where I'm at always discard their hides . But it works great for me because I love working with rawhide
+Coyote Walking So many uses and it gets easier as you go.
If you still have this hat, I think it would be really cool to see a layer of buckskin, or some softer, thicker leather, sewn around the brim and glued/sewn into the head portion. :)
I wonder if someone can sew an animal skin like goat with the fur side for the human head making it soft & warm for winter months?
@@Drebotchris that's how it's normally done
Cool hat. Thanks for the vid.

Very nice hat, I think I’l try to make it someday

Great vid. I’m going to make myself one
اعجبني عملك 🇩🇿😍👍🤩🙏❤😘🇩🇿I like your work and I like the hat
Dig a bit, then stand on yer' head for sizing...! 🤣
Do a little spin to make sure it’s even on all sides

Great video
Awesome job!
David Oshiro Thanks my friend.
Bad Ass! Awesome work man I love it!
Thanks brother, give it a try
Good looking deerskin hat. But IMO it needs a hatband to be complete. Thanks for the video and keep 'em coming!
+Vin Lee Haha I agree my friend, a hatband would finish her off. Videos coming soon, sorry I've been mia for a while.
A rattle snake hat band!
@@Rambooutfitters A rattle snake hatband
How do you store the hide after you skin it and tan it? How long can you store it for?
Ah id like to know the tanning method you used.
@Sophia ive handled 14 deer hides. Various preservation methods. The only ones that didn't last were the album tanned ones and the no tan ones.

Man that’s awesome!
Perdy neat. Thanks for sharing.
Nice job
Would it be possible to do with hair on?
that's cool! liked it! thx!
A face sculpted by God himself.
He reminds me of a young LaVoy Finicum
seeamerica1, I had to look him up. He apparently was an awesome guy!
John Workman, You could not have said it better! (and I'm Atheist) You don't get to see it much but his body too. He must put a lot of work into it.
Super cool!!!
Thank you, no machine no chemical it's natural
+Erkan Turan Thats right. Thank you my friend.
But could you do this with tanned leather
Found your vid on making the tanning juice! Thanks alot!
Is it possible to make one with the fur still on it and for the fur to hold up?
That's basically a trapper hat then
Dat iz totally awesome n kool bud saweet
Where did you learn how to make this
Way to cool........👍
Great job! When you say you made your walnut oil, can you make a video about that?
ruclips.net/video/dgi-_MvVGXM/видео.html
I recall reading Stetson Hat Co. got it's start making rawhide post hole hats..............I guess this is what those were.
Awesome video!
Thank you my friend
Really cool!
My hide bunches up at the rim when I try to sink it into the hole. Any suggestions? Is my hole to deep (~3.5 to 4inches)or rawhide is too thick?
Are you putting weight on the rim while it dries?
hey man I just stumbled across your channel. love this hat, love what you do. I have a question though, what exactly is that " walnut solution?" And what else can I use to "color " the hat

I know I'm 2 years too late but just a few comments down he links a video
You can use extra strong black tea as a substitute for the Walnut solution
Another update: hat's still doing good. It's definitely very warm (winter hat). It actually fits a lot better now. All I did was let it sit unworn over the warmer months.
How should you maintain this?
That's awesome I'm definitely saving my next deer Hyde. How long did you soak it in the Walnut solution?
Shoot, I was hoping this strategy was done with buckskin, not rawhide haha. But still very very cool!
Can you cold smoke this? I'm looking for info on cold smoking hides. Cheers
You basically want to cold smoke it. You don't want heat you just want the smoke
I like your way for make an hat, lolllll
Haha thanks my friend
Good job
good for you my my my a good hat man!!!
Conrad Meyer Thanks brother. Definitely worth making.
Looks great!! I watched your tutorial on how to make the walnut dye, but how do you dye the hide with the finished dye?
giovannis11607 Sorry for the late reply and thank you. I soaked it in the dye for a night or two. If you heat the dye over the fire and put the hide in it will dye better and faster. Then I rub some in after I smoke it to give it one last coat. Just use a rag to wipe it in like staining.
Thank you so much!!
giovannis11607Anytime just ask.
Can this be done with having the deer fur on the outside?
It’s not really the best idea to have the fur on the hide. And I don’t think it’d work really
He wore the world as a hat for a few seconds
Iam droping my jaw, thats my hut :)
Haha worth making my friend
Thank you for showing that, was just thinking to make something similar, but i did not know what material to use.

Coloration of that hat reminds me of jeepers creepers hat
I was expecting you to be Australian at first lol.
Nope born in Michigan haha
I love this this is cool I will have to do this with my brothers pelt
+Jeanette Baker Absolutely. Give it a try
+Jeanette Baker You skinned your brother and you are making him into a hat? Thats brutal.
ha ha funny!
That is so cool!!!!
Do you sell your hats
Totally kool just embellish with some rattlesnake,
09:40 what is that?
