  • The Gospel of James, also known as the Protoevangelium of James, and the Infancy Gospel of James. Audio book. This is LibriVox recording and is in public domain. Narrated by CJ Plogue. The Gospel of James is an apocryphal gospel probably written around the year AD 145 or earlier, which expands backward in time the infancy stories contained in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, and presents a narrative concerning the birth and upbringing of Mary herself. It is the oldest source to assert the virginity of Mary not only prior to, but during (and after) the birth of Jesus. The ancient manuscripts that preserve the book have different titles, including "The Birth of Mary", "The Story of the Birth of Saint Mary, Mother of God," and "The Birth of Mary; The Revelation of James." It is also referred to as "Genesis of Mary". It is regarded as canonical in the Eastern Churches.

      Apocryphal, not apocalyptic. And what apocryphal means in this context, essentially, is a writing that was not ultimately included in the authorized canon of Scripture. Now, there could be many reasons for this, including that such writings were not universally recognized as authentic from all groups of practicing Christians. But understand that the process of deciding what would ultimately be included in the New Testament was a centuries long process of numerous church councils, comprised of very fallible men participating in a process that was, at times, nakedly political.

    Mary according to this story is not from a poor household. She is of a well to do family. Then why do they make Jesse's out to be poor.carpentor. He was of a high status, not surprisingly, since Mary and Joseph were both in line to the throne of Israel. Which was infact the cause of Heruds fear of losing his throne.. Jesus was by all accounts ,the rightful king of Israel.

    How can James be a cousin and brother @ the same time if the both had the same parents ?

    • @Unseen.Warfare
      @Unseen.Warfare 2 года назад +3

      Because Mary never slept with Joseph . She stayed a virgin her whole life. I assume James was Joseph son from another marriage. No such thing as cousins at this time. They would have called someones cousin someone’s brother in the Jewish culture at that time. So, that’s why people say he was the brother or cousin of Christ. We know he was related in some way. We just don’t know how he was related.

    • @odetafecani1614
      @odetafecani1614 Год назад

      Yes . The Orthodox Church maintains James was the son of Joseph from his previous marriage, thus technically a stepbrother to Jesus Christ.

    • @52abaradabala83
      @52abaradabala83 Год назад +2

      He can be both a cousin and a brother if Joseph wife is Mary's sister, assuming Mary has a sister. Now James is Jesus's brother because it's is His half brother by law as Mary is betrothed to Joseph. At the same time he is Jesus's cousin because their mother are sisters.

    • @odetafecani1614
      @odetafecani1614 Год назад

      At the same time I have heard that during that time in Jewish culture and early Christians called each other “brother” or “sister” and it didn’t necessarily mean biological brothers or sisters. They could have been even unrelated. Language at that time doesn’t have the same connotations that it does today. However the Orthodox Church does think of him as stepbrother to Christ because of Joseph’s previous marriage.

    Why are you choosing to read a translation in Elizabethan, as opposed to modern, English? All those "thee," "thou" and "thy" words don't make the text any more respectful, and only serve to make the text more difficult for modern English speakers. You may not know this, but 'thou', in Elizabethan English, was the singular familiar pronoun for 'you,' and would have been used to address close friends and family. 'You," in Elizabethan English, is the formal form for 'you.' "Thee" is the oblique/indirect object form of thou, and 'thy' or 'thine' are the possessive forms. But using them today makes little sense. And it isn't somehow more "holy" to use archaic langage!

    What a false gospel. This is not orthodox. It denies the human aspect of Jesus. It says "And immediately the cloud disappeared out of the cave, and a great light shone in the cave, so that the eyes could not bear it. And in a little that light gradually decreased, until the infant appeared, and went and took the breast from His mother Mary." For Jesus to be fully man, he must be born from the Virgin, not beamed out... This is an attack on Christ's nature and this is why it is not accepted.
