The tongues have brush-like tips to help them get pollen and nectar from the flowers. But also they seem happy to use them to lick everything and anything that interests them. I've seen birds eating stuff balanced on cage bars but I never imagined it was the bird putting them up there. I see kiwi does the same thing my birds do which is stuff food in the mouth then walk it up to the top of the cage to eat.
