I used to feel that pressure being Asian, and living up to that notion I'm good at math. But the sketch on MadTV "Average Asian" helped break that stereotype in a funny way. I'm not saying that's what changed my perspective, but when it comes down to it, we're humans, all ranges of intelligence, heights, weights, baggage, unknown futures, etc. So all we are doing on this planet is to live, help one another, and try to leave it a bit better, not worse. I find it so interesting Vivek is even running -- doesn't he realize that the others on that stage/in the field of candidates don't actually believe he or his parents should be in the country (even if he was born here)? HOW can he have the same values as tRump? It's astounding.
I definitely believe their attempts to shut him down come from a place of fear of a second authoritarian without governing experience outside of a marketing (i.e. social business and theoretically a bit narcissistic) background. It probably also doesn't help that he doesn't fit their model of religion as well. Nikki Haley at least conforms to their expectations of a successful woman and has made her way in the governing sphere by passing as "white American." These two individuals starkly show the difference in responses. While Pence was trying to mansplain on Women's Healthcare, he and others at least gave deference to her SC governorship and UN Ambassadorship. Both gave her credentials that Ramaswany doesn't.
I really commend Prachi Gupta for being courageous enough to make her family's story public and in the process debunk the fallacy of the model minority myth that many South Asian American immigrants cling to for dear life. There is such a burden of shame and silence so many live under and we do not have safe spaces in our community to speak of such things. My Indian immigrant parents lived a life of total honesty and authenticity, almost to a fault. There was no such thing as being one way to desis and another way at home. I naturally imbibed this my whole life and I have had difficulty connecting to our community for that. If that is the price I have to pay for being 100% authentic, so be it. My life has been richer for it.
In the 1980s, I was well acquainted with a fellow chess player, of Indian descent, who was terribly bright and talented. The pressure he endured from his parents drove him out of university and to take solace in the bottle. He dropped out of chess and largely from life.
Vivek is all "my side" and "my side that" when he talks about Republicans while prominent right-wing media personalities make fun of his religion is too perfect.
Someone should ask him which God he believes in during the debate stage and the response of the Republican crowd will tell everything that needs to be told.
@@lostboy3080 I don't approve of religion shaming as a rule and do believe that Christian Exclusivism is a concern to me, but I do expect an interviewer to dig into his faith (possibly 60 Minutes as that's where that kind of thing often comes up as it's the sort of question that will come up in a deep dive) at some point. How he responds to it will be interesting. He did go to a Catholic High school (according to wiki) but his family was also actively religious in his own (US side) Hindu temple. it would show a complexity in religion that I'm interested in hearing (please note, this interest is separate from whether or not I would vote for him, the answer on that for me is NO).
I have read a lot of articles of middle eastern men getting leg-lengthening surgery because they were embarrassed with their shortness. I didn't know this desire extended to Indian men. This is an insane and brutal procedure.

Stop. We all acknowledge that all men of all races deal with all issues when it comes to body image and perception. She is specifically talking about how it impacts black and brown men more especially in her own family she is talking about her own experience.
Congratulations, SpaceX, on another successful crewed mission to the International Space Station and for ending US dependency on Russian spacecraft. Boeing failed, Musk prevailed.
Its called a contract. In this case, its called a social contract. That is why white people believe they are owed privilege, and black people believe they are owed equal Justice under the law, and youth believe they are owed a life better than their parents... Get it?

Very interesting segment, thank you
Her brother's pain makes me weep. Will definitely read "They Called Us Exceptional".

Thank you for giving a voice to minorities who are trying their best to be seen as ‘the good ones’
That’s sad

Democrats and the left wing have done the same. For example Tulsi Gabbard was shamed for being a proud hindu in her own party.
Prachi is very intelligent and gorgeous. Great interview ❤
Love the parachi! Heart and work.
Great book! Loved it.
Leg lengthening surgery who has $ for that? Monthly healthcare premiums/deductibles are skyrocketing.
It's not as expensive as you'd think. This surgery has been around for decades. I have cousin who did it in the early 90s

Humans are vain. Getting plastic surgery has nothing to do with being a minority.
Caste....
Vivek's the type of person who closes the door behind him once he himself gets through the door. 👈👀 Fair warning for those supporting him.

Good topic. Never knew this point of view. Now I know.
I wonder how tall her brother was before the surgery.
I think I missed the entire point of her book and this interview
Basically her brother died trying to live up to standards that arent real. Or at least thats how I'm understanding it
I wonder is she still a feminist tho sounds like that drove a wedge more then the minority thing
Any updates on the Nashville trans mass murderer manifesto??.?
So 1 trans person proves they are all the same.
Now explain why 90 percent of mass shootings being white males has no bearing on white males.
this was horrible
President Trump was described as an athlete..6’3’’ 215 pounds with "blonde or strawberry" hair and blue eyes
The Aryan stereotype.
Of course she completely misses the possibility that men in general regardless of race might be dealing with issues.

"Birthing person"? That sounds utterly ridiculous!
Not the proper use of that phrase. Leave it to the scientific professionals please... women is just fine
