Whenever I have set up a new stereo, I would play this video to enjoy what is possible with regard to sound quality at home. KEXP, your recorders and mixers deserve medals.
This was Dave's best solo lineup and I wish he could've just kept this rolling, but glad he's always evolving and finding himself more as the years go by. One of the most inspiring humans ever.
at 8:34 he has a drive into a Memory Man with low repeats at a high speed and an expression pedal. He could be running parallel out and just using that effect when he pushes up the expression pedal, or he just turns on the Delay and it builds up on its own.
At 8:35 the light is on for the "feedback" option on the Deluxe Memory Boy, so that is what the expression pedal is controlling. I know I'm late to the party, but I was recently looking for this answer myself. Hope it helps!
So, I discovered Pedro and Control last year. It's changed my life. I listen to at least ten or eleven times a month now. It's a go to for me if I can't think of what I want to listen to.
This is one of the BEST KEXP live mini-shows that I've seen in a looooong time. Saw Bazan last year in Tempe, AZ. He was good, but he is ON FIRE here...
Gotta love Bazan. I saw these guys right after he picked up Fitts and Westcoat in Tucson and they are very technically sound. I hope they play together for years and years!!!
It is sort of a PTL song. From wiki: "'Cold Beer and Cigarettes', originally known by its alternate title, 'The Devil is Beating His Wife', came to light as a 2005 Pedro the Lion demo recording."
It actually is a Pedro Song. They played it on tour as pedro the lion in 2005. They also released multiple demo versions under pedro the lion both acoustic and full band (Dave and TW).
I must say this line up sounds phenomenal way to go westcoat and fitts but god that T.W. was the man and PTL was my first love! glad to see it still living!
Man, I don't know who that is playing drums - Alex Westgoat is a fake name, I think - but that drum part on Magazine is NOT easy. Bazan is a terrific drummer and he wrote & played that on Control. I think it might have got harder for this performance. Really impressive.
Sort of isn't actually. PTL was done by 2005, even though he didn't announce it until 2006. This performance is the full band, thus he didn't do "The Devil Is Beating His Wife" because that's the acoustic version of Cold Beer & Cigarettes. The song didn't appear officially until his solo EP. Boom. Yes, I realize this makes me the biggest Bazan nerd but I don't care. Guy is a story teller.
He's used a bunch of different amps. Recently Chris Benson of Benson Amps built him a cab of some sort for his house show stuff(i think i saw it on the Benson Amps instagram). He has also used a Benson Monarch and Vinny. In the past he has used a Dr. Z Maz 18 and Remedy. A bunch of different Fender stuff like a Champ, Bassman. I have no idea what he's using here. You can see at around 8:35 his pedals he's using is a TC Electronic Polytune, Roland EV-5, EHX Memory Boy Deluxe, Xotic Effects RC Booster.
Hey! Great eye, I couldn't pick out the Roland. Can I ask, is the Roland expression pedal what he is using to get that super wobbly breaking sustain sound? A great example of it is right around 8:32-4ish?
I agree with andrew crane, not so similar to Bon Iver but I too could see them playing the same festival or a tour stop or two. Both are easy on the ears none the less.
Semantics. The song was a demo being worked on by Dave and TW but PTL was finished before they announced its demise. This is a song of Dave's that was an epiphany of the solo-Dave, not PTL-Dave. I don't know why I care but I just know that it wasn't a PTL song.
David Dondero opened for every show of his tour last year with the Passenger String Quartet. When he finished his set David Bazan asked what we thought of him and told us "you're gonna want more."
Bummer, I was hoping the fourth song was going to be Priests and Paramedics. And "Cold Beer & Cigarettes" isn't a PTL song, it's off the first Bazan solo EP.
Options is one of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs I've ever heard. Stunning.
+chad
And mine...Ham on Rye...Yeah!
This is such a phenomenally well-engineered session. Sounds incredible.
I've tried and yet I still can't get through Options without tearing up
stopped crying 4+ years ago. These songs are reality.
Guercinator longest winter kills me every time!
Thank you for reminding me of this track. WHat was the name of the Album?
@@drhowslounge Control. The first record I ever bought from Pedro and it changed the game for me.
Whenever I have set up a new stereo, I would play this video to enjoy what is possible with regard to sound quality at home. KEXP, your recorders and mixers deserve medals.
I have watched this video so many times. Great live performance!
This was Dave's best solo lineup and I wish he could've just kept this rolling, but glad he's always evolving and finding himself more as the years go by. One of the most inspiring humans ever.
Bazan is getting the GNARLIEST feedback on Magazine!! I just said 'whatttttt' to myself here in my studio. Performed so well - wow
at 8:34 he has a drive into a Memory Man with low repeats at a high speed and an expression pedal. He could be running parallel out and just using that effect when he pushes up the expression pedal, or he just turns on the Delay and it builds up on its own.
+Aaron Walker Yeah, was trying to figure that out myself. SO GOOD.
agreed, I think the MM is just oscillating into lovely craziness!
At 8:35 the light is on for the "feedback" option on the Deluxe Memory Boy, so that is what the expression pedal is controlling. I know I'm late to the party, but I was recently looking for this answer myself. Hope it helps!
Oh KEXP you just keep giving and giving and giving. What would I ever do without you.
So, I discovered Pedro and Control last year. It's changed my life. I listen to at least ten or eleven times a month now. It's a go to for me if I can't think of what I want to listen to.
It's like Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney "Remember that time when you were in the Beatles? That was cool."
Bridge of Cold Beer and Cigarettes has me HYPED. Wow - beautiful.
This the best version I've heard of Cold Beer & Cigarettes. I'd love to have it rather than the recorded version.
By far my favorite version of the song as well. Probably my favorite version of Options as well.
SAME
Drummer playing exactly like the record. So good.
So flawless they play with every song it gets better and better
Bazan. Options still crushes me to pieces every time.
This is one of the BEST KEXP live mini-shows that I've seen in a looooong time. Saw Bazan last year in Tempe, AZ. He was good, but he is ON FIRE here...
This takes me back to years ago. They're just flawless.
One of the few artists whose lyrics add to the artistry. Brilliant. Thank you David.
Best video on youtube.
Now this is what I'm talking about, absolutely amazing
Those drum fills
This band kicks ass man! Excellent. Hope they keep writing new material.
Thank you David Bazam for distracting me from taking my own life...
MM 10712 it's a year later, you still there?
@@ranickhaan that's a negative.
Priests and Paramedics is one of my favorite songs on that album, he does it well with this band.
I'm so stoked about the new Pedro. can't wait to see them this weekend. I hope TW is back in.
Gotta love Bazan. I saw these guys right after he picked up Fitts and Westcoat in Tucson and they are very technically sound. I hope they play together for years and years!!!
Advertisements in the middle of these songs is CRIMINAL. SHAME KEXP. SHAME.
That drummer's timing is amazing. Saw them at the Troubadour in LA and couldn't believe my ears.
18:00 just love that part. Have always loved it. Will continue to love it.
That was the most insane performance of Magazine!! I would’ve lost my damn shit if I were there live
how good is Magazine
oh.
my.
fucking.
god.
The feedback
The voice
The drums
K Savv Second Best is still in my top 5 of all time.
probably my fav song of his... DAMN. So good.
Bro, it's one of the best songs ever written.
The guitar feeding back during the breakdown on Magazine is just so perfect.
It is sort of a PTL song. From wiki: "'Cold Beer and Cigarettes', originally known by its alternate title, 'The Devil is Beating His Wife', came to light as a 2005 Pedro the Lion demo recording."
This is music in it's purest form
Control has been a go to for me since I discovered it in 2012. The phrasing, the vox, the story, the immersion. It's still on.......
Is anyone else amused by the fact that Bazan plays a "Reverend" guitar?
Because of his misanthropic christian views?
Very amused, but because Reverend makes kickass guitars.
+indiesthlm He's not a Christian these day.
Dave Smith ah, missed that little detail during the last decennium... thanks.. =)
Reverend is a great brand. They're hometown guys here, so I gotta give the respect where it's due - also they make a kickass guitar.
Thank you for assisting me making my point.
still amazing!
Holy fucks, best version of Magazine I've ever heard.
It actually is a Pedro Song. They played it on tour as pedro the lion in 2005. They also released multiple demo versions under pedro the lion both acoustic and full band (Dave and TW).
So rad!
Good cover songs
Que buena canción sin duda una de mis bandas favoritas, siempre conservado esa buena musica y su estilo.
Slow and Steady Wins The Race
incredible
Love you David.
Where did you go my sweet sweet child ;-;. I miss your songs
Excellent
Bazan é o cara.
Tu achas, Daniel?
Sempre achei, Hugo DiLeon. Vc não?
Acho bom tb.
You ruined the song with your advertisement
Can anyone tell me what that beautiful guitar hes playing is?
YES!
he's a great musician
Yesssss!!!!!!
david gilmour on the bass? :)
THE BEST
nossa cara! esse é intenso hein!
so fucking good.
Guided by Voices will hit KEXP next week
I must say this line up sounds phenomenal way to go westcoat and fitts but god that T.W. was the man and PTL was my first love! glad to see it still living!
It's now been longer since this performance than this performance was since Control.
the drums on magazine. holy god
Nice one.
Alex Westcoat has a monster pocket.
Man, I don't know who that is playing drums - Alex Westgoat is a fake name, I think - but that drum part on Magazine is NOT easy. Bazan is a terrific drummer and he wrote & played that on Control. I think it might have got harder for this performance. Really impressive.
That Neptune show was unreal.

Boom. Yes, I realize this makes me the biggest Bazan nerd but I don't care. Guy is a story teller.
Hey dumb question does anyone know who the bassist and drummer are?
Seth Bonillas I believe the drummer is Alex Westcoat and bassist is Andy Fitts
@@grahamdavis4904 he introduces them as such, maybe the question is driving at are.they in anything else?
Any questions?
Missing TW
cool stuff :)
I wonder if "The Devil Is Beating His Wife" is a reference to the Silkworm tune of the same name? Seems unlikely it'd be a coincidence, right?
its good to see david gilmore on bass tho i love his guitar work
David's guitar tone in this is so nice. Anybody know what kind of amp he's using? (or what he uses generally?)
Hey! Great eye, I couldn't pick out the Roland. Can I ask, is the Roland expression pedal what he is using to get that super wobbly breaking sustain sound? A great example of it is right around 8:32-4ish?
I saw him that night at Neumos- it was Fucking Metal.
anyone know what guitar david's playin?
reverend charger
I agree with andrew crane, not so similar to Bon Iver but I too could see them playing the same festival or a tour stop or two. Both are easy on the ears none the less.
Encore?
Options is of heavy material....but amazing piece of work...
Semantics. The song was a demo being worked on by Dave and TW but PTL was finished before they announced its demise. This is a song of Dave's that was an epiphany of the solo-Dave, not PTL-Dave.
I don't know why I care but I just know that it wasn't a PTL song.
Well now all Bazan songs are Pedro songs
Also, he says before the song "This is a Bazan-brand song, not a Pedro song"...
Anyone who can tell me good bands similar to Pedro the Lion / David Bazan?
Bright Eyes, Brand New, Pavement, Built to Spill
Devonte Clark Good tips, liked every single one of those, thanks! I'd also add Damien Jurado!
Bedhead
pandora can
David Dondero opened for every show of his tour last year with the Passenger String Quartet. When he finished his set David Bazan asked what we thought of him and told us "you're gonna want more."
That bass is actually sexy tho
respect4lion
honestly? i disagree tho i can see them playing together deff
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Somehow his voice is better live. Somehow. How?
Always has been. Don't know how or why 👍
Bazan was Pedro the Lion. There was virtually no other members.
That feedback on "Magazine" is just destroying me.
I'm very sorry ... I like it a lot, but I have been listening at 1.75x
That's how you get the ska version of Cold Beer and Cigarettes
Reverend Charger sounds beauts
TW Walsh shreds
I love this music (first)
hmmmm c'est bon
sounds kinda like Wintersleep
11 ppl don't know music
Have you heard Bon iVer. sound just like him listen to skinny love and holocene.
Bummer, I was hoping the fourth song was going to be Priests and Paramedics. And "Cold Beer & Cigarettes" isn't a PTL song, it's off the first Bazan solo EP.
Incredible
