@LiveOnQueen I didn't think there was anyplace that did not have at least a few RUSH fans, where is it that you live? Playing RUSH songs is basically what I spent my entire teen years (and then some) doing. Yes, I do take requests but I should tell you that I don't cover much material after the Presto album (I have a longwinded explanation but I'll spare you that).
This was the first Rush tune I ever learned on guitar. Took me a couple of months to really nail it. I was about 16. After that it was the album side 2112. I think I've played bits of everything they've written, and everything up to Signals completely. Thanks so much for the performances. I think Rush is one of the most complete power trios ever- and still to this day.
I think the sound I'm getting has much to do with how the bass is set up and how I strike the strings. In this video, I'm plugged straight into a small guitar practice amp (Fender SP-10) with just a bass and treble control. In some later videos I put the bass through a SansAmp and plug into the same amp. The bass is set up with a very straight neck, light strings and low action. I sort of smack/pluck the strings to get some clack and rattle out of them which is a big part of Geddy's sound.
@TJH3113 - yes, yes it is on both counts. that album in particular sold me on the band, and made me realize that deciding to take up the bass was a good idea. Disc 3 from the triple live album also has a pretty good version of many of the songs, although Gary has a hard time singing in time!
I believe it is a 2008. I had a beautiful Fire Engine Red 1970 something that I traded for an Ibanez Roadstar 2 back in 1986 I'm ashamed to admit. What finish is yours?
@LiveOnQueen Not "ten" years, my 'teen" years. I don't play the more recent stuff because Geddy radically changed his playing technique and I didn't put the time and effort into grasping it. I was doing other things musically as well. It's our lucky day as I've already done Before and After, just look for it on my channel.
@clinehar Thanks. My amp is a little Fender SP-10 guitar practice amp. No pedals of effects - just straight into the amp. The amp's volume is very low and the microphone is very close to the speaker. The bass is actually a recent ('09) 4003.
Thank you. My camera has an external mike input so I just place the microphone between a little practice amp and my computer speakers and hope for the right balance.
that's so funny. All the world's a stage was my first rush album as well. I still prefer most of the versions of the songs on that album to the studio ones, especially lakeside park.
omg omg omg thats .. you are amamazing! :OOO im blown away and you have a beautiful ricky! if you could sing like geddy lee, that'd be the icing in the cake.
@TJH3113 well there are a FEW but not alot...i mean not as die hard as i am :/ ( geddy lee is adorable! :D) and they know only the big hits B/ 10 years! WOW so you must be pro by now haha and not to worry, i wasnt a big fan of the 90s albums ( except roll the bones i love that album, getting into test, and just counterparts....im trying to like it, give it time) and its okay im kinda curious to why that is, and may i request Before and After? :D its my Favorite song!!
@TJH3113 your very welcome! i adore any rush fans :D ( im not a creeper dont take that the wrong way) its just there arent any where i live soo yea hah and its real gnarly that you can PLAY rush songs ohhh could i make a request of a song for you to play :DD??
@TJH3113 oh sorry i misread that ahh okay i see, well thats okay because, i think there older stuff is better. oh you did?? im gonna go watch it now. thanks :]
hey, awesome job!! just wondering what your using for amplification? great sound your working with. are you using any pedals? bass chorus or anything? 4001 rules!!
Hi Troy, Awesome cover, as always. BTW, I cannot watch this video on my Android phone. "The video is unavailable on this platform". Is this intentional, or just a misconfiguration? Not really a big deal, though :D
@angelacevedo2112 well he plays upright bass he thinks rush is cool but i dont think he would play a rush song we play bebop and swing at home but i play funk and rock with my friends.he can play the electric basshes got a huge colection of framus fenders g&L and 1 rick but its not that one its a old autmn glo with only one pick up
I feel like in that interlude at around 2 minutes, you have a very bright major note that's not there in the original. I think it's a G#. Sounds a bit jarring. I'll have to listen more carefully to the original. Otherwise beautiful!
technically you;re great, you just need to express more emotion & PASSION when you play. That's what seperates the "men from the boys, as my dad would say!
Each bassist is different. John Entwistle and John Myung are straight-faced. Les Claypool is bizarre. Geddy Lee has fun. Roger Waters has a cynical sense of humor.
LOL!...EMOTIONS?!! THE GUY IS PLAYING A BASS LINE TO A ROCK SONG!! NOT A CELLO SUITE FROM BACH!! HE DOES THE JOB FINE...BASSLINES IN ROCK ARE NOT ABOUT EMOTIONS BUT ABOUT HAVING THE RIGHT GROOVE AT THE RIGHT PACE PERIOD. THE SIGNER AND OTHER MELODIC INSTRUMENTS TAKE CARE OF EMOTIONS.
The way he just sat down and started playing was so boss...
You have one of the greatest tones I've ever heard on RUclips bass covers... proves what Rickies can do!
@LiveOnQueen

I've always seen you as a kind of teacher when it comes to learning Rush songs. Thanks a lot for making this video!

One of my fave RUSH tunes. Awesome
I'm glad that you liked it, thanks.
love how you use the model bass from the time period and thanks iam a drummer and i so dig this but my fathers a bassist so this isnt so foreign to me
Each time I am learning a Rush song on the guitar. I always look at your bass videos. So inspiring. Great cover once again. Respect.
@caduregnier
Hello and how are you? Thanks for watching.
@TJH3113 - yes, yes it is on both counts. that album in particular sold me on the band, and made me realize that deciding to take up the bass was a good idea. Disc 3 from the triple live album also has a pretty good version of many of the songs, although Gary has a hard time singing in time!
Cool. I would have preferred a black or blue one but they're pretty scarce. I got lucky and snagged mine the day after the store got it.
@LiveOnQueen
Thank you. That's very nice of you to say.

perfect
Hail from Brazil ,i'm learning a lot with you man...keep going!!!
Thanks a lot. That's one of the best compliments you could give me.
AWESOME! Not a note missed! If I was Geddy and I broke my wrist on the eve of a world tour, I'd be calling you! =)
@clinehar

Great job as alway. My favorite Rush song about the French revolution 😝. Thank you for sharing
Mine too! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Thanks. Most of the masks are from Death Studios and Jeff is a really cool and talented fellow. I've been playing for over 30 years.
@Rowdyrecords55
I don't have any plans on doing "Necromancer" but you never know.
Troy you are so calm and collected as you play this dynamite song!!! Love it!!! :-)
I try. Thank you Marvine.
finally nailed it. thanks a lot Troy, great learning resource.
@wnils Probably the second RUSH song I ever learned after Fly By Night.
@ivanmike1968
The sound is a little raw on "All The World's..." but the playing is much more aggressive than the studio versions.
Thank you. My camera has an external mike input so I just place the microphone between a little practice amp and my computer speakers and hope for the right balance.

Man what a great sounding bass.
Thanks.
@GeezLeeweez Thanks. You can get it, just keep working on it. By-Tor is up by the way.
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you liked it.
omg omg omg

im blown away and you have a beautiful ricky!
if you could sing like geddy lee, that'd be the icing in the cake.
@angelacevedo2112
Thanks. I tried to play a "period specific" bass for most of the covers, but not all. Do you get to jam with your Dad?
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Kudos for another Killer Rush bass cover my friend!!
Excelente cover.
Thanks. Same to you.
Totally rock!!! Fantastic man..
Thx again
Thanks a lot.
Thanks a lot, I appreciate it.

Happy Bastille Day!
@GeddyLee211 Thanks.
Very, very nice, Troy!
Thanks.
Any chance you would be willing to do the Necromancer cover?
@2kosher
I'll work on that.
Thanks.
My #'s in the book.
@constantine2112 Thank you.
@kalisota It's not too bad.
@TJH3113 your very welcome!

oh you did?? im gonna go watch it now. thanks :]
Tell that to Geddy Lee who will smile and make funny faces while playing a bass solo.
Thanks. I'd take them down but have nothing to put in their place.
That Glorious RICKENBACKER.....Yep, Let Them Eat Cake
Glad you liked it.
@TheBommer29
Ok.
Extremely nice technical performance. Awesome. More emotion please. Feel it deep down and emote when playing. This song is about revolution.
Thanks. We're all out of emotion here.
hey, awesome job!! just wondering what your using for amplification? great sound your working with. are you using any pedals? bass chorus or anything? 4001 rules!!
fantastic! How do you record your bass to your PC?
@YooTubeSuxLikeHell Thanks.
Can you link me up with the tab for this ?
Excellent job by the way!
From what I can tell this tab is accurate:
www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/rush-bastille-day-bass-tab-s23756t2
Well done man! What is that Rickenbacker?
Thanks. Yes, it is a Rickenbacker 4003.
Hi Troy,
Awesome cover, as always.
BTW, I cannot watch this video on my Android phone.
"The video is unavailable on this platform".
Is this intentional, or just a misconfiguration?
Not really a big deal, though :D
It has to do with whether or not the "content owner" will allow it to be played on a mobile device. Often, not.
How do you get your Geddy Tone?
@angelacevedo2112 well he plays upright bass he thinks rush is cool but i dont think he would play a rush song we play bebop and swing at home but i play funk and rock with my friends.he can play the electric basshes got a huge colection of framus fenders g&L and 1 rick but its not that one its a old autmn glo with only one pick up
