Try enabling "Auto remove redundants." Select the wrench icon located beside "filters" while in sketch mode. There will be an option to toggle this, as well as "Auto constraints." This may help. FreeCAD is quite picky, I'm finding out.
I found that trying to create anything more than basic shapes in Part Design WB (sketch based) I ran into brick walls... "not allowed". So I migrated to Part WB and started cobbling parts together using the primitives there using cuts as needed. DEFINITELY not elegant, but I seem to get it done. I'm very interested in seeing how you approach more complicated curved objects using Part Design WB. I have a graphics background and I'm sure as I get more proficient it won't take me 20 minutes to make a simple constrained cube in Part Design. That's why I started using Part WB... Just click on the primitive and plug in the dimensions.
I'm definitely excited to make more of these and get into deeper topics. I've learned a lot over the years, and hopefully can get others past some hurtles in FreeCAD. I do find unconventional approaches are needed sonetimes. I have been able to make most of my more complicated designs in the part design workbench. I will say in previous versions of FreeCAD, I would agree with you it constantly would just complain about something not being valid. There are still occasions like that, but I would say they've done a much better job of detecting actual issues versus non-issues

I thought I turned that off in the past but I must have reset my settings.
I'll have to check thar setting. Thanks!
