    Born in Tamworth, I remember many of the old businesses featured. Fled to London in the Thatcher recession and never returned. What happened to the centre of the town in redeveloping it was an act of cultural vandalism.

    Alpine pop truck on a Saturday morning, 3 bottles of pop, that all we were allowed. dandielion & burdock. We moved from B;ham in the 60's to the Leyfields ( Cant place were the photo is loooking at). Tammies blamed us for the demolision of thier town, but we loved it the way it was.

    Thanks for the video. It’s really interesting to see how Tamworth looked before we moved here in 2010. My grandad’s family were from the Lichfield and Tamworth area. Grandad was stationed at Whittington during the war and subsequently moved to Birmingham and drove the buses there. I’ve heard many stories of summer days spent at the Castle grounds and lido. I’ve heard from locals how a lot of the ‘old town’ was pulled down during the 60s. All those beautiful Tudor buildings gone, such a shame. Although there’s been some definite improvements in some areas over the years! I remember the demolition at Spinning School Lane happening, with subsequent talks of a new retail quarter to replace it. It’s now 2022 and it’s still a ‘temporary’ car park! With all that aside we still love it here. Tamworth has a great sense of community. Thanks again for sharing your video 👍

    Used to go to the indoor pool all the time in the 80s and early 90s with my grandparents. Amazing that in about 1989/90 they built a slide/flume that went outside the building, but it only lasted for about 2 or 3 years. What a waste of money to close it down after such a short time.

    9:24 fun fact, an Egyptian mummy is buried under the old McDonalds site. The building was previously a cinema and the building owner was fascinated with Egypt and its historic artefacts, so kept it in the cellar for display. It’s long since been concreted over and is likely inaccessible these days.

      How would he get a mummy tho, he would have to get into a guarded pyramid

    • @DarylJewkes
      @DarylJewkes 2 года назад +1

      @@Josh-gm3be I think he was involved in an archaeological dig, rather than robbing a tomb or a pyramid. He brought 3 back for his personal collection amongst other things (this was in the 1930s). He had them displayed around his home (Bolehall Manor) but kept one on the site of McDonalds for viewings.

      @@Mark0ne yes it was, yes I thought it was next to the garage but I was very young so memories are little blurry. It's one of my earliest memories. I've never forgotten being parked outside it one day in my dad's allegro. The windows were like a blueish green colour.

      By the mid 2000’s the precinct was dead however there was an amazing Chinese restaurant called the dragon in the corner that was lost when it was knocked down and I’ll be resentful of this until my dying day!!
