    I know the gardens that brother talks about back in the 60s. What you grew would last most of the year and you bury the potatoes and pickle just about everything else - remember canned peas. The rows of fruit tree that whanau had, 20 to 40 trees....Did you sneak between the potato farrows to the young green peas? Did you raid the watermelons next door - I did..
    I'm in my sixties now, and remember those gardens and the need for Kai with big whanau. Mum salted, pickled, bury (potatoes) and preserved everything vegetable and animal, corned beef and bacon - I'm sure we could share these ways we have learnt to survive: kanga ko piro, kangu waru for example.

      Growing up here in Whakatāne as kids we knew where all the fruit trees were around the town. We would gorge ourselves on the kai and yep even did some night raids on our neighbours grapes and plums 🌚

    Mean as the concept of not churning up the ground and planting straight into mother earth is beautiful and makes alot more sense then breaking your back.

    I love the garden. beautiful kaupapa with the seeds and getting the clay and other whanau to go and grow the kai. Love this video. My dad taught me to leave the grass growing around the plants too, to help keep the plants moist.

    Hello, I agree with you guys about the seeds , some shop seeds are ok but the way you get the old seed
    is better , I have a Scarlet runner that my Mum gave me and she got it from her mum in the 80's . It's
    a hardy Bean and has good flavour etc . You will end up with a store house of seeds for your future
    families in NZ .

    • @WekaDigitalMediaNZ
      @WekaDigitalMediaNZ  5 лет назад

      Those scarlet beans are my favourite to grow, though not heritage but bunnings. Very hardy alright, I can see why they continue to provide great crops year after year. Very tasty too!
