- A clip from the Battle of Somme commemoration at the Thiepval memorial in France including Charles Dance (of Game of Thrones) reading Sassoon. Music : Sospiri by Edward Elgar
Goodness gracious , could there be anything more appropriate than this beautiful conjoining of Sir Edward Elgar's Sospiri , and such moving, heartfelt poetry .
And in that setting too .
Leaves one speechless I'd say .
Thank you for posting this.
A great piece of music, Elgars Sosperi, capturing sadness, calm, loss and passion and Siegfried Sassoon's superb lines including the line "do you remember the chill hopeless rain, ".... How appropriate.
The casualty figures for the Somme still haunt me, over 72,000 British and South African soldiers lost in this catastrophic battle with no known grave... The Missing.
The Australian, Canadian and New Zealand armies also fought here, but have their memorials to those killed and the missing elsewhere.
The British Expeditionary force for 140 days between the 21st June 1916 to the 28th September 1916 suffered 420 thousand casualties, and 1 in 4 of this figure, over 100 thousand were killed on the Somme battlefield and have no known grave.... The Missing.... Known unto God.
My Mum's only Brother Arthur Frank Wilson was killed on the Somme on 1 October 1916 aged 19. He had joined the South Lancashire Regiment in 1913 aged only 16 before the war started. His name is recorded on this Monument to the Missing at Thiepval France which records the names of 73,000 British soldiers whose remains were never found. I have been there several times to lay a small cross. He was from Parr, St Helens my home town. Frank Smith of Sydney Australia.
I’m sorry😢…..
As soon as the Elgar started, the heavens began to cry.
It's an incredibly moving place. I visited a few years ago, not long before the centenary. As beautiful as this service would have been to attend, having the place to myself that day was special.
Wow. That is one powerful reading of one seriously powerful poem.
In the book "A Storm in Flanders: The Ypres Salient, 1914-1918: Tragedy and Triumph on the Western Front
By: Winston Groom", Groom tells the story of the battle of Flanders. Field Marshall Plummer was at the dedication of this memorial. He told the survivors and the families of the dead, "They are not missing. They are here."
Thank you for posting this clip from the Somme commemorations at Thiepval. The haunting lines of Sassoon, the sonorous voice of Charles Dance and the beautiful music of Elgar's Sospiri make this a very moving performance.
This is sublime art by man, music and nature. The weeping sky, the clever camera work which makes Charles Dance and the monument seem to float above the fields, and the repeated accusation 'Have you forgotten yet?'
This 100th anniversary service was a fine tribute to those men - and a powerful reminder of what was lost. This segment is as near perfect as is (IMO) possible.
Love💗Charles Dance💃so much! My favorite part of this is the speech🎤he gives!
I can't imagine a better way to mark the centenary of the Somme than this music of Elgar, these words of Sassoon and the voice and gravitas of Charles Dance. I can't believe I've never come across the Sassoon poem before, but it exactly hits the spot, reminding us - as we must always be reminded - that whatever noble values and brave hopes you think you're fighting for, in the end it's just young men being killed.
God was crying and so am I!
That sounds so beautiful
what an incredibly powerful monument...
The words 'The Missing', they still are the tens of thousands throughout the western front. Every so often they are no longer missing. #wewillrememberthem
The war to end all wars. A land fit for Heroes. The filth The Rats The Fleas. The Bombardment. The Shooting of UNDER AGE BOYS for alleged cowardice. Millions died British, Empire, and Commonwealth troops. No war of adventure this as being taught by the academics. My Grandfather was there. Mr Bastin he survived WW1. His only son died over Hamburg.Trying to save his Canadian Crew and his aircraft. Aged 24 in 1944. My friends Mother, her Father died in 1916 she never knew him. My Grandmother and Aunt both died in WW2. NO MORE WARS. NO MORE HATRED. NO MORE IGNORANCE. NO MORE PREJUDICE.
In dear memory of my 2 Grandfather's and 2 Uncles who seved in France 1914-18 ( one died,3 survived) for King and country. " Ever loved"
Never never forget those magnificent Brave Courageous Boys and Men of both 1 and 2 wars and more recent conflicts guys that have made our armed forces what they are through history God Save The Queen !!!
It seems to me that most have forgotten 😢
In my opinion
We should be ashamed of how we have let this country get into the mess it’s in today.
We shall remember them all sounds rather hollow now
Poor people dead for rich royal families all over Europe how sad that the poorest give all , have the least only to give the most, never again I won't forget with tears in my eyes, 10 million for what, 20 year a later 50 million if only we could forget
We will never forget. What has we learnt? As I post this message in October 2023 there is still war and people suffering.
