- A record-breaking heat wave is sweeping across parts of southern and eastern Asia. Many countries have recorded the hottest April on record. Millions of people are still battling the punishing heat and soaring temperatures have forced school closures in some regions. Authorities are taking other precautionary measures for citizens to avoid heat stroke and dehydration. DW spoke to environmental lawyer and climate activist Rafay Alam.

Apart from all the fossil fuels being used , people don't realize how much deforestation plays a critical role in stabilizing the earth's climate and temperature.
There needs to be a mass movement in putting forest back. There is some goin on but it needs doubling down on. Not seeing many self declared green corporations governments or celebrity big mouths helping.
To be fair, people do realize this, but the people in power and capitalism have been ignoring them. The killers of the ecosystem must be stopped
Actually, in the USA, in the name of "green energy", renewable energy, they burn complete forests to make electricity.
Mass reforestation is cheap and doable capitalism or not. It is the will a vision that is lacking. Individuals can support efforts right now. But Small projects are not enough, more is needed to achieve positive affect on scale.
Industrial Plantation forestry is also a tool to be used, even if its not ecologically perfect. It does take pressure of natural forest.
@@doctorbigsmiles A lot ordinary people insist on having lots of firewood to keep their chilly houses hot, so they can wear sexy clothes indoors year round.

That's no warm if u can make coffee and boil eggs. Man, philipinos are so tough that a hot water considered warm by them 💀
In the past few years, it's been so bad in New Orleans too. The "cold" water in summer is almost as warm as the hot tap. You can't really cool off by taking a shower. It's terrible.
Plants and animals don't get to use air con or cooling centres. How will ecosystems 'adapt'? If ecosystems die we die.
Ive left the Philippines when I was 25 and the highest temp I have experienced then was 36-37 degrees C. Now temperatures range up to 40-46C! Just in a span of a decade there has been an abrupt increase. The sad situation is that a lot of Southeast Asian countries do not produce as much greenhouse gases compared to the US, China, EU countries, but we have experienced the worst effects of climate change such as stronger typhoons and droughts. Unfortunately I do not see any massive changes in governmental policy and implementation of greenhouse gas laws to curb further rise in temperature.
Yeah Living comfortable there tell your new country that your motherland is most affected!
Thats why China is pushing for Solar panels, EV cars, battery, Wind Turbines, LED lights and Hydro Power.
China should neutralised their CO2 emission before US and EU.
because of money and greed you know, but the cause and effect of the climate change is domino effect in the world because we live here and connected to each other. They just wait and see more people suffer and died before they react. We have already died because of heatstroke, and expect more people died because of climate change.
Because you’re closer to the equator, the effects are even worse.
Western countries have reduced their use of coal but Asian ones increased theirs.
One reason is that Asia is actually producing most of the goods but... burning coal to do it.
Anyway, the main problem is not America or Europe or Asia, the main problem is overpopulation.
There is no cute end to this problem.
This is nuts! And in other parts of the world we are drowning. Nothing but rain, thunderstorms and tornados 🌪️
The west is finally staring to get their share of the storms. maybe they will wake up to their insanity soon .

People may need to consider living in shelters below ground to keep cool. Don't rely upon our governments to prevent climate change.
Nature can be wonderful if we treated fair. Don’t rely on any economy in the world.
1,000 people in a single week dying from heat stress in a city!
Here in the US both oil corporations and auto companies stop at nothing to prevent people from knowing how their lifestyles affect the rest of the world.
Actually we need fossil fuels in order to keep living standards high and climate related deaths low. Solar and wind are unreliable and destructive to the environment.
It's more than oil and cars. Energy, food and material production are a big part too
@@imtheeastgermanguy5431when will the west pay us for this?
It's all very well keep advocating air conditioning and fans but the use of more electric adds to the problem long term. Simple things like painting roofs white reduces the temperature inside the huts considerably, governments should be investing in micro solar projects for people planting more trees for shade along the streets. Farmers watering their crops at the end of the day so the water doesn't evaporate. I see that all over Europe, great sprays of water in the heat, bad for plants, bad for water conservation.Couldn't help noticing how many people are wearing polyester and other man-made fabrics, especially the Rohinga ladies. The environmental lawyer was spot on.. plenty of money for wars and all the human misery and pollution they bring and nothing to protect the only planet we have to live on!
you mean YOUR government which is causing this. This is a result of the sociopathic west.
I’ve worked in a building with a white, uninsulated, metal roof in the midwest of America when it was only 40C with 88% humidity. It wasn’t appreciably cooler, and I was glad there was AC in my house!
Seriously, DW?! "Communities like these will have to find ways to adapt in the years ahead"? They are suffering the consequences of production and consumption patterns of developed countries, and THEY HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO ADAPT?
damn straight
Yes they have to adapt. Pakistan produces an enormous quantity of greenhouse gases. You have excellent scientists. Put them at the front of your country.
Media is a joke.
@@pghislain , every country has to adapt. My point is that countries that contribute the least to climate change shouldn't have to FIND WAYS TO ADAPT to a situation caused mostly by developed countries, who emit most of the carbon. Pakistan is not even on the top 20 list of carbon emissions by country. And if you look at carbon emission per capita, the country is even further down the list.
@@sheilah_ while I understand your rage, I also want to underline that one way or another everybody will have to adapt, heat is not going away, it can just increase in the future. Poor countries should be funded by wealthy countries to fight against heat and find new ways to adapt
As the dude accidentally alluded to, the climate gases emitted by "rich" countries, particularly the European ones, are a rapidly shrinking proportion of the total, and with inequality out of control in most of those countries, appealing (or indeed demanding) that their publics pay to mitigate the impact in poorer countries is a losing strategy.
I wonder how economies will do when their ecosystems are entirely dead. A lot of activity in the middle of the Sahara, right?
Olive oil presses from the roman era were found there. Man turns ecosystems into deserts.
Ecosystems are resilient they won’t completely die, but they can still overturned.
@@Auroral_Anomaly If we keep up as usual or use modern weapons they will
@Auroral_Anomaly If you look at the earth right now compared to 200 years ago, most of it is already dead. If you study the archeological record, you will see much more could be dead. Lastly, despite what we think, we are not the most resilient species.
I wonder the same thing, but economies and ecosystems don’t just die (unless it’s a tsunami, comet, mega volcano).
The problem is that the distribution of resources (money, but also means) to reduce the effects arent divided equally. So is the use of those resources and the pollution and overconsumption.
Mother Nature doenst judge it takes and gives. These heat strokes, rising temperatures and less crops are the start. At the moment nobody wants to take their losses. As usual throughout history a disaster has to happen to get all parties and people aboard to change. Many people already want change (activists, individuals, some governments), but some cooperations don’t. And don’t forget the feasibility of the change. Luckily there is a spark of hope from innovation and scientists with many things being tested. But all things together won’t make this change a smooth ride at all…
Thank you Rafeh for the analysis

He knows, as well as we do, that there are many ignorant deniers out there who will shun a few facts, but another might get through their resistance.
The anti-science feeling among many people who are still miffed over the pandemic/vaccine situation and the Western governments preoccupation with warfare is holding back crucial action needed on climate change, and this is a message that must get through to our governments
There's no time for war.
There's no time left for anything else.
Honestly, to me his urgency in his voice and the speed in which he speaks fits the situation. I can also understand him well as a foreigner. After the first stop in his speech the "interruptions" got more professioal with both of them allowing questions and then the answers.

I know Western Europe had a few heat waves last year.
Summer has only just begun in Europe. We may get a taste of these extremes in a month or so, and I hope it hits us like a hammer to be quite honest. It's the only thing likely to wake people up - to see people suffering and dying on the same scale as the pandemic.

The next 10 years will be a transition period for energy transition.
As the temperature rises, wealthy people who own coolers use electricity without feeling guilty.
Then, CO2 is emitted from the thermal power generation, and even hotter air is blown out from the outdoor unit.
This vicious cycle has occurred in China, and will continue to occur in Southeast Asia and India.
Global warming will accelerate unless we do more to reduce the amount of coolers we use as much as possible, like I did.
People and pets with coolers can protect themselves from the heat, but outdoor animals and plants will die from the heat, which will be reflected in the food shortage situation in the near future.
I have published some effective energy saving measures on my homepage, so please refer to it.
Also, the icon photo is the device that saves the most electricity.
