There's another Charlie Rose interview on YT, around the time JLC published The Russia House, where he had Charlie in stitches with his Alec Guinness impersonation. It was a delight.
"I don't smoke but I always carry a Zippo lighter in case I have to light a beautiful woman's cigarette or the wick of a Molotov cocktail." - John LeCarre
He's a good writer, and it's still a better book than 99% authors will ever write. All good writers are thieves to some extent and he actually says the novel was a nod to Greene's work in this interview.
I always found Charlie Rose the worst interviewer on American prestige television: he frequently interrupts his guests -- and always at the most frustrating and less opportune times -- and talks too much because he likes to show off to the audience how smart he thinks he is. He should have been fired long before he finally met his MeToo reckoning.

Le Carre called it as it is in the 90’s and we are still catching up.
I've never seen Charlie so amused by his guest before. He and John Le Carre seem to enjoy each other's company.

He is so intelligent...Listening to him is like a drug.
Interviewer likes the sound of his own voice and doesn't think much of the intelligence (no pun etc.) level of his audience...
Charlie has a hard time shutting his mouth and letting people speak.
350 milllion Americans - and this is the guy they choose to become their number one interviewer
"Swore him in as president, without troubling the electorate" 😂😂
The Tailor of Panama is a less subtle, more convoluted, version of Our Man In Havana. I wonder if Le Carre ever recognized his plagiarism?

Charlie Rose was supposed to be a genius interviewer, but he's so slow on the uptake here
Le Carre getting headache from 18min onwards.
@@jaqmart 100%. 🤣
