Thank you - a very informative video. I have seen some other points referenced as indicators of early printings in both the NA and UK editions, and they are the lack of a period after Feanor in the index, plus an italicized "and" in the index under Ulmo. Do you know how these points fit into the different editions of the Silmarillion?
Those errors are definitely in the first impression US, and the export (Clowes) UK. The UK domestic (Billing) 1st, and 2nd impressions, have those two points corrected. Chad will have to answer when they were fixed in the later US impressions of the 1st edition, but I would guess it was very early on.
I would love to see you do a episode on the 1974 Houghton Mifflin collection edition. It’s my favourite edition even though it does not contain illustrations like the newer editions. As far as I know it was first printed in 1974 but has many reprints. I’ve seen many copyright pages of this edition that all different. I believe my copy is the 11th printing. You can find many editions claiming to be a 1974 edition but I’m sure most are just reprints and not a 1974 edition. A history of this edition might be interesting to most of us. I meant to say it’s the Lord of the Rings single volume 🤦♂️
They are plentiful still (huge print run), but finding a copy in fine condition can still be a fun challenge. I'd say in the $10-20 range is still doable. -Urulókë
There are a TON of copies out there still due to the large first printings. Still there are lots of collectors looking for really nice condition copies.
@@TolkienGuide I recently picked up a very nice one at my local half price books. Based on what you said it would be a second printing or more (with the farmer giles correction). While the condition is great, it did not come with a dust jacket, any advice on what I should look for to make it complete?
@@immson I don't know of any facsimile jackets, but there are plentiful other books with jackets on the market - have patience, and enjoy reading your current copy!
Thank you Mr Underhill. TCG is a great source of information for all Tolkien fans!
Really enjoy these videos! More please - including tours of your libraries please!!
Interesting video

Hopefully our video on identifying which impression you have will be helpful! ruclips.net/video/HRoL0l-FlpY/видео.html
@@TolkienGuide I’ll check that out, thanks man.
Do you have any idea on the value or rarity of the 1986 book club edition?

Okay so based off this video I definitely have a 1st edition. Is it worth anything? That’s pretty neat to think of though!
