Good video. My first litter was born on March 1 this year. We had 3 straight days of single digit highs and lows. You may recall I messaged you in a panic and you quickly answered me. I put my hand down in where they were, and it was like a sauna. No cold issues whatsoever.
Thanks for this video. 90% of my male went sterile during the last heat. They were mating with average of 4 fall offs but only a measly 8% of my Does had babies. I almost gave up on most of my choices Bucks but they’ve started doing well even with a better coat and body shapes as soon as the rain started falling. I will go for a canopy over my rabbit house to see if it gets cooler in the summer. Many thanks for this.
I live in NC ,I agree with you. NC gets HOT. my girls takes a vacation. when it comes time to breed them. they are so happy to see the guys. also it helps with clean up. so much easier. In the winter I have only lost one baby. that was because we loss power that night. it was way cold outside. we had to bring that mom inside. that night but just didn't get to save that one baby. winter in NC the part we are in is not that bad.
Just started a breeding cycle with my new does because they are of age. Highs are around 80 here in WV. Not as hot as you up here in the mountains. The lady I got the 2 NZ blacks from said she breeds year 'round here.
It's also a huge heat stress to have an older litter with mom in the cage during the summer. They all pile together and can cause heat stroke. I had 7 babies that were about 6 weeks old with mom in the high 90's and they almost caused her to have heat stroke, due to their need to cuddle. That was with fans running. I have my fans on the rabbits, but they are oscillating, not fixed.
Hello Chris thanks for the helpful information but I bread in the summer this year And you are right it was a bit hard on them so I'll be only breed in the winter from now on. Thanks again
Here where i live is 75F+ degr always maybe in winter is a bit more cool never super cool or freezing just cooler like 60-65 or 70F... right now its 6:55 pm and its on 84 F
hey chris, doug here. i have had no problems with breeding during the summer months. i live in northwestern illinois. i just had a litter of 10 born his past tuesday. my problem is getting them to breed and the momma's being able to keep thier litters during the winter months.
interesting. I never have problems with lost litters in the winter. As far as getting them to breed, you might try adding some light to make sure they have at least 12 hours a day of light. That might help.
your videos are great I have learned alot from them. i keep a similar breeding schedule my last kits where born june 24th from a rabbit iwasnt sure that took. what do you do if you are not sure they took. had one fall off then the doe got agressive tried again a few more times and the doe was still realy aggresive
I always just assume that the rabbit is pregnant and put the nest box in at the right time just in case. If the rabbit gets aggressive it is a good sign it probably took.
hi Chris, I had a doe that was wheezing this morning, the other 7 does in the pen are fine.by this afternoon, she died.wondering if this was heat related.also,is it common for a rabbit to nod it's head when panting? or is this something more serious?
I am sorry to hear about your loss. It very well could be heat related. Generally that is a sign of stress or some kind of illness. If it came on suddenly then it may be heat stroke. It is hard to be sure but if everyone else in the same cage is fine then I would lean towards heat related issues. On the bright side it is probably best that you are not breeding her and passing those genes on if she can't handle the heat.
I’m so confused... we bred our three does a month ago, and they kindled this week... we went from 19 babies to 2 in less then 10 hours today 😭😱 what went wrong??
Do you have have on falling over. I have a male rabbit that is new about a month ago and with in the last week he started falling over and acting drunk
I recently bred my bunnies and they aren't meat rabbits But I was hoping u could answer my question.. so I bred my bunnies and after I put the female back in her own cage she was grunting and pushing alittle bit and she seemed to be bleeding alittle.. it was both my bunnies first time and I was just wondering of this behavior was normal after breeding?
Hey Chris, Firstly cheers for all your vids, very interesting pointers and I love reading everyone's experiences and questions. I'm in the planning stages of breeding rabbits for both, pets and meat consumption. The problem is that this will be in the Philippines where the temperature hovers around the 29-31C (84-87F) mark with the humidity averaging about 80% all year. Do you have any vids for breeding in these tropical conditions? cheers
I am sure that the rabbits in your area are pretty well acclimated to that. The best tip I have is to make sure to use an open top nest box. Don't use one that has a top on it at all. You need lots of ventilation. Hope that helps.
Always enjoy your Chris. My first experience raising a litter of NZs, their 2 months old now, I put the 2 males, together in a separate cage, away the mother and female siblings. I was a little surprised today to see the one male mounting the other one, thinking I didn't pay closer attention to identifying girls from boys, but yeah they are both male brothers. Is this normal in young male bunnies?
im in mi so winter would be too cold if my best doe's babies were too cold on the porch ......and its rare to be over a hundred ..... most 70-50 max highs in july or aug...... but rarely so would march through june and september oct work before its too hot or too cold
well it can be done in warmer weather and if you have that all the time the rabbits are probably more acclimated to it. Just give plenty of ventilation and you should be fine.
Hello my name is daisy and I have a rAbbit, and I want to breed her ,and she is and outdoor rabbit and she is 9 months old ,what do I need to breed her?
stick her in with a male rabbit and she will most likely be bred before you know it. I did some videos on how to breed rabbits in cages and they might be helpful to you. ruclips.net/user/edit?o=U&video_id=nlkYf-Kj6Ho
I have a Giant Flemish & a Giant Continental and they are extremly sensitive to heat more so then smaller rabbits, they are both litter trained and free roamed in the house with A/C access . Spoiled rabbits 😂🤣😅
Thank you for your input and for being respectful in your response. I understand your concern with wire cages. I actually did an entire video on that topic a while back if you are interested in watching it. ruclips.net/video/j2M4o6SRWTI/видео.html As for rabbits not being food, I think we will just have to agree to disagree on that.

I do remember that. Glad to know it all worked out.
Thanks for this video.

Breeding in the summer can be difficult for sure. Sounds like you have a good plan though.
All points spot on. I just clicked on to see if I was on the same track. Great advice, clearly explained for the novice. Well done.
Thanks so much.
I hope u r still doing videos. This was very helpful.

I don't even have power to my rabbit shed and have never had any problems with losses. They do very well in the winter for me.
Just started a breeding cycle with my new does because they are of age. Highs are around 80 here in WV. Not as hot as you up here in the mountains. The lady I got the 2 NZ blacks from said she breeds year 'round here.
If it didn't get over 80 I would breed all year round too. :)
ya in mi its rare to get over 80.... so would it be ok to plan them around hot days and breed em specific days so they arent born on a hot day?

I agree. I don't breed in the summer for just that reason.
thats why i figgured spring and fall .... would be best in in mi....

must be nice. It was 101 today. :)
July-sept down here in South Alabama. It's miserable for me so I can't imagine a pregnant rabbit out in this heat all day.
I know what you mean. Kind of my thinking too.

Any! But harder in dog days and freezing temps

I follow the exact same schedule.....Maryland.
Nice. Don't know the weather in maryland right now but it is hot as can be here.
I’m so confused... we bred our three does a month ago, and they kindled this week... we went from 19 babies to 2 in less then 10 hours today 😭😱 what went wrong??
I hear laying a ceramic tile in each cage in the warmer months are a nice way to help them cool off in summer. Thoughts?
I do that. It is a good cheap resting mat and does stay a little cooler. They get pretty dirty though and do require frequent cleaning.
Do you have have on falling over. I have a male rabbit that is new about a month ago and with in the last week he started falling over and acting drunk

It isn't abnormal. It shouldn't be anything to worry about.
Slightly Rednecked ok, thank you!
Great video. How about a video on prevention of diseases in quail and what about problems with insects with the quail (mosquitoes)..
Good suggestions. I might see what I can do on those topics.
also at 3:49 does the hay fall through the hay holder outside of the cage
Some hay falls through the hay feeder outside but not much, mostly just the dust.
Hey Chris, Firstly cheers for all your vids, very interesting pointers and I love reading everyone's experiences and questions. I will definitely build the nest boxes to those specs. Thanks for your great vids, all the best
For how many days does a male rabbit become sterile while kept in over 120deegree farenhit
Have a 2 year old Chinchilla doe, never been bred. Is it too late to breed her?
It isn't too late. I would give her a try and see how she does.

It is pretty normal. 2 months is a little early to start seeing that behavior but it isn't anything to worry about.
George P probably just dominance and deciding who's boss
I am in west Alabama and I have just decided to try rabbits.. How many would u suggest for a beginner? I thought 2 does and 1 buck to start
That is a pretty good number to start with. Not too many to handle and give you a good amount of meat through the year.
im in mi so winter would be too cold if my best doe's babies were too cold on the porch ......and its rare to be over a hundred ..... most 70-50 max highs in july or aug...... but rarely

My American rabbit is not ready to breed how come and nice video
What makes you think she isn't ready? Rabbits don't go into heat like some other animals.
we are in Canada. Is -22 F in the winter good time for breeding?
I haven't tried it that cold but I have no problems breeding in weather down to -5. I would think it would work just fine.
What type of weather is best to breed a new momma rabbit?
Cool weather is best. I don't breed when the weather is above about 85 degrees (F). Hope that helps.
well it can be done in warmer weather and if you have that all the time the rabbits are probably more acclimated to it. Just give plenty of ventilation and you should be fine.
How long male rabbits become sterile while kept in over 85. Farenhite deegree

Giant angora rabbits I think they are 30x 36
Yup, mine are 30 by 36
hey chris can you do a video on cross breeding rabbits advantages
and disadvantages
Sure. I will see what i can put together.
Thanks a lot
Thanks 👍
Thank you for watching.
Thank you

i am getting a giant angora
yay
Nice, congratulations
Wire cages are not good at all! They are really bad for the rabbits hocks and the wire will rub them raw...also rabbits are NOT food!!!!
